Phillippi Landings Bridge Opens

The bridge to Phillippi Landings was dedicated and opened November 14th. Bob Morris, Phillippi Landings‘ developer, told the crowd gathered for the dedication how it came about. He and son Rob, the project manager, were driving down the Trail soon after purchasing the old mobile home court property. ―Dad,‖ Rob said, I think we need a bridge across the creek as an entrance to the project.‖ Bob said he replied, ―that‘s really a crazy, impossi- ble idea with all the permits and approvals that would be necessary. But, there it is, the new Front Door to Phillippi Landings.‖ Rob Morris read the laundry list of county, state and federal agencies as well as multiple consultants required to get necessary permitting for the $3.5 million project. He thanks everyone for their effort resulting in an on time and on budget project. The first driver across the new structure was John Speicher. He and wife, Bar- bara, won a lottery for first across at one of the Friday night socials. His wife had made plans to visit relatives in Connecticut, from where they moved to Florida a year ago, so John was the lone pilot. A comet, Comet Holmes specifically surprised astronomers, amateur and professional, worldwide, by staging a sudden and unexpected explosion. The explosion made it million times brighter than its usual condition, invisible to the naked eye and binoculars. Our Dr. AL Weeks, consultant to The Eagle on such matters, calls it a sight not to be missed. He‘s also puzzled at the lack of coverage in the mainstream press, at least as of this paper‘s deadline. An astronomy professor at Colorado Mountain College, Jimmy Westlake is quoted in the Denver Post: "It was like the full moon becoming as bright as the sun - overnight." He went on to say: "What we're seeing is volatile material - a mixture of dust and gases that are boiled off the surface and diffusing spherically," Peterson said. "So you get a bigger and bigger ball of dust out there, reflecting sunlight. Here are Dr.. Al‘s instructions for viewing it: ―Look north, find Cassiopeia (looks like a big W ) and Polaris east of it. Then with your field glasses scan slowly upwards, moving diagonally at about 10 deg. (a hand's width) to your left (westward as you face north) as you move upwards. You will be startled as you run right into Holmes. You can't miss it. Actually, you can see it with the naked eye depending on how dark the area is from which you are viewing. Oct 24 16:22 UT Oct 25 17:27 UT Here‘s Dr. Al‘s updater at press time:. It ls quite a sight to see Comet Holmes almost "on top of" Mir- fak in Perseus. Of course, the comet is some 200 million miles from the Sun and some 100 million miles from us whereas Mir- fak is a very distant almost 600 light years (!) from us, or many trillions of miles. But for this object to be all but occulting a star (Please see “Comet” on page 32)

The cost per stilt is $850. The Eagle walked much of the path of the swales in question with Chastain. In many areas they appear to be overgrown and slow moving. In some areas it is clear the drainage swale mark- edly extends its shoreline during heavy rain or moderate flood- ing. This writer, from personal observation over the past ten years, can confirm ―flooding‖ has been relatively minor over the past couple years, compared to two years when the fringes of the Eagle‘s Nest Area had swales between homes over 3 feet wide and flowing into the streets for several days after rains. An examination of the original Landings drainage plan ex- plains the concern. The accompanying diagram depicts that portion of the drain- age system terminating in the Roberts Bay through the swale between The Cloisters and The Treehouses. It is roughly half of The Landings ―Unit One.‖ All Unit One consists of all individ- ual homes, Carriage Houses and The Treehouses. (The diagram is approximate in placement and NOT to scale.) Many additional swales exist in front of and between residences feeding these major points. The storm water system is totally dependant on gravity flow toward Robert‘s Bay. Note drainage comes from as far away as the south end of Kestral Parkway North. Former longtime Landin, and an expert on Landings roads and drainage, Don Smally tells The Eagle drainage to Carriage House Lake also comes from the Sarasota Board of Education property. Also, according to Smally, not all of the swales and piping were built as originally shown in the ―Unit One‖ specification. An underground drain goes from Flicker Field Circle into Port- side Lake (8) and on into Heron Lake (4). It is then piped back across Landings Blvd. to the swale on the east edge of The Cloisters. Smally describes from that point on to the Bay as ―County Drainage Way.‖ He says: ―In the past I prevailed on the county to have it cleaned out. They used prisoner labor that shook up the neighbors. Happy Holidays and see you The next Mixer will be: on the courts. Saturday December 15 at 11:00 AM Tip of the Month: Choosing a Tennis Racquet Before you can choose a racquet you must find out what you Some Faces from the LRC Halloween Night feel when you use the racquet. There are four main characteris- tics of a frame that most players can feel: power, maneuver- ability, shock comfort and spin. All manufactures create rac- quets with these characteristics at different levels and specifica- tions. There are seven specifications that have the most direct influ- ence on the four characteristics: Length refers to the length of the racquet and today‘s frames range from 27 inches to 29 inches. Second, Head size, the area where the strings are. The sizes range from 85 square inches to 137 square inches. Third, Stiffness, how hard it is to bend a racquet. Obviously not by hand, a special machine that measures it. Fourth, Weight, the overall weight of the racquet. Fifth, Balance, the point of the racquet where the frame will balance. Sixth, Swing Weight, referring to how hard it is to swing the racquet — influenced by the weight and balance. This is also measured using special equipment. If your racquet has a high swing weight it is harder to swing the racquet. Lastly, String Pattern, is how many strings are in the racquet from the mains to the crosses. There are other specifications of tennis racquets but these seven are the main ones on which to focus. These specifications also affect the feel of the four characteristics mentioned earlier. For example, width and what the racquet is made of affect the stiff- ness and weight of the racquet. Each of the specifications affects the power, maneuverability,

The feature runs only when you supply new Recommended Vendors. If you do, it runs despite space limitations. It is easy to recommend your favorite vendors. But, as a free service there, is some fine print below

This is the “fine print.” 1. You supply us in writing (e-mail or letter) the name, service provided and phone number of a vendor you use and can recommend for home services. (Retail outlets and non-residential services do not qualify.) Categories included are at the sole discretion of the Eagle. 2. Supply your name and phone number so we may verify—we do not release it.. 3. The Eagle will list the vendors in two consecutive issues. A second recommenda- tion, from a different household, will bring a second listing in the next issue and a desig- nation (**) of having been recommended by more than one Landin. (Original listing date in parenthesis.) 4 Listings are limited to two issues. After two issues, vendors remain on the recom- mended list at the www.LandingsEagle.com website. 5. There is no charge for these listings 6. The Eagle reserves the right to solicit the vendor to advertise in a future ―Landin’s Recommend‖ annual supplement—though we never have.. 7. Neither The Eagle nor the recommending Landin assumes any responsibility or Support Eagle liability for the work of the vendor. 8. We do not follow up on the list, removing those out of business, etc. So, send us the names of your: housekeepers, babysitters, caregivers, painters, handypersons, carpenters, cabinet makers, lawn maintenance people, Heat/AC, tree Advertisers trimmers, sprinkler repairer, roofer, etc. Share the good ones with your neighbors!
