The conference will maintain the shorter thirty-minute time slots introduced in San Antonio: most sessions will be ninety minutes long, featuring three papers. CONFERENCE INFORMATION 2019 7–10 November Hotel Reservations Hyatt Regency Columbus The Hyatt Regency Columbus (350 North High Street) has reserved a block of Columbus, Ohio rooms for conference attendees. SMT encourages graduate programs to designate one or two $165 for regular members faculty representatives to attend the reception; programs who will not have a $85 grad student/retired/unsupported representative present at the conference may send flyers for display on a single table. By 1978, in a landmark United States Supreme Court ruling on university admissions, the word “diversity,” now a noun, comes to inscribe both a qualitative distinction of ethno-cultural groups and their quantitative distribution in institutions of higher education. Although the balance between quality and quantity, as well as their definition, was subject of much legal dispute, the notion became widely accepted that diversity of representation of various groups was fundamental to the educational mission of the university and the well-being of the social field.     OPEN LETTER TO THE MEMBERSHIP At a time when the pace of national and international events is unusually brisk and the implications broad and deep, many of us are asking ourselves what we, as individuals and as scholars in the field of music theory, can reasonably do— SSocietyM for Music TheoryT how we can make a difference. There are many ways to respond, some vocal and external, others ostensibly silent and internal. But as musicians know all too well, silence can be highly charged, a point of reflection and projection. It can be a critical place of contemplation and discernment, the roots of determi- nation and resolve. Newsletter Two things we can do as a Society are 1) reaffirm our values as members of a scholarly community that transcends disciplinary boundaries and national borders and 2) redouble our commitment to do what we do best—educate A Publication of the ourselves and foster the high-level exchange of ideas. During my year as President-Elect, as I learned the SSocietMy for Music TheoryT workings of the Executive Board and the Society, I was repeatedly impressed by how easily someone’s creative idea could transform into an action that ben- efited our members.     Open Letter on Antiracist Actions Within SMT In the first 10 days after publishing on July 29, 2020, this letter received more than 900 signatures. At the Plenary Session of the Society for Music Theory’s 2019 meeting, Philip Ewell, Yayoi Uno Everett, Ellie Hisama, and Joseph Straus powerfully demonstrated how systemic racism, sexism, and ableism animate musical discourse. They spoke not only with candor and wisdom, but also with exceptional courage. The Journal of Schenkerian Studies, in Volume 12, has just ​ ​ ​ published a number of vitriolic responses to a single aspect of one presentation—under the pretense of scholarly debate, no less—and the ensuing scandal has diverted our field’s focus from the structural critiques made in the plenary. The journal’s violation of academic standards ​ of peer review, its singling out of Prof. Ewell while denying him a chance to respond, and the ​ language of many of its essays constitute anti-Black racism. These actions provide further ​ evidence of the structural force of white supremacy in our discipline. While this episode is the most recent, and perhaps the most illustrative, the treatment Prof. Ewell received from the Journal of Schenkerian Studies is only the latest instance of systemic racism that marginalized ​ Society members have faced for many years. We applaud the recent statement of the Executive Board of the Society for Music Theory.
