SECTION 1 WELCOME

To All Prospective Competitors Welcome to the 2020 Otago Rally. We have a challenging rally planned comprising approximately 280 km of special stages on fast gravel roads. Two pass reconnaissance will be available on the Thursday and Friday before the event.

Day One will be based around the historic gold mining town of Lawrence about an hour west of Dunedin. There will be 6 special stages on fast public roads including the monster ‘Manuka Hill’ stage last run in 2014. The final stage will be the traditional tarmac ‘Super Stage’ run on the streets of Dunedin. As was the case in 2019 gravel specification tyres must be used on all driven wheels in the Super Stage.

Day Two will be run on both sides of the Taieri Plains centred around the Service Park at the domain on the shores of Lake Waihola using a mixture of new stages as well as favourites such as Waipori Gorge, McIntosh Road and of course, Kuri Bush.

A unique opportunity exists in 2020 for competitors to compete in the FIA Pacific Cup (at Otago and Whangarei) with starts in these two events qualifying for entry to the APRC final in New South Wales in November.

NZ specification cars (both 4WD and 2WD) will be eligible subject to complying with FIA safety criteria. Further technical information should be sought from MotorSport NZ.

SECTION 5 STAGE DESCRIPTIONS

LEG ONE : Saturday 4th April 2020

SS 1 Burma Road 23 km A new stage for 2020 but has been used in the reverse direction in 2017 (SS 2) and 2014 when it was called ‘Gooseneck’. 100% public road. Slightly tighter roads for the first few kilometres but then opens out onto wide and fast flowing roads. Medium/heavy gravel.

SS 2 Adams Flat 13 km Another new stage for 2020 but like SS 1 it has been used in the reverse direction in 2017 (SS 1) and 2014 when it was called ‘Fallaburn’. Fast and flowing on medium/heavy gravel public roads. Watch out for the cautioned crest/jump at the finish.

SS 3 Manuka Hill 48 km A monster public road stage before the first service break, last used in 2014 (SS 3). Will be fast – very fast in places and will reward the brave. Medium gravel, heavy in places.

SS 4 Cockleshell 13 km 100% public roads run in the reverse direction to the stage of the same name in the 2017/18/19 Lawrence rallies. Last run at Otago in this direction in 2017 (SS 6) and 2014. Very fast public road with tricky brows. Medium/heavy gravel.

SS 5 Corkscrew 16 km A stage familiar to competitors in the Lawrence rally that hasn’t been used for the Otago Rally since 2011 (SS 6). An old favourite run on public roads with medium/heavy gravel on a hard base. A mixture of twisty sections and fast flowing roads. Finishes alongside a river on the left.

SS 6 Puketi 24 km A new stage using wide public roads that have been used previously in different configurations. Like the rest of the day’s stages it will be run on fast and wide roads with a hard base. Medium/heavy gravel.

SS 7 Tarmac Super Stage 2 km Like 2018 this will be run in the traditional format first started in 1996. Fast and exciting but watch for other cars, kerbs, power poles and tyre bundles. Gravel specification tyres must be used on all driven wheels.

STAGE DESCRIPTIONS

LEG TWO : Sunday 5th April 2020

SS 8 Black Rock 15 km This will wake you up. Very wide and fast flowing public roads that have been a real favourite. Last run in 2017 (SS 9) and prior to that in 2016 (SS 14).

SS 9 and SS 14 Siberia 18 km The only forestry stage of the rally run in the upper Berwick forest. A new stage not previously run in this configuration. Relatively tight and narrow at the start but opening up to a fast-downhill finish.

SS 10 McLaren Gully 13 km An old stage not run in this forest for many years. Public roads that includes the central part of ‘Kuri Bush’ in reverse. Take particular care over the double cautioned ‘Joe’s’ Corner. The first 5 km (approximately) were used as the first 5 km of SS 2 (Otokia) in 2018 and similarly the last 5 km approximately was also the last 5 km of that stage (SS 2) in 2018.

SS 11 Taieri Beach 13 km Last used in this direction in 2018 (SS 3) although this year the stage will be 4 km longer. First 9 km are on relatively twisty public roads before finishing on 4 km of gravel forestry roads.

SS 12 Table Hill 28 km Fast public roads very wide at the start, with a narrower middle section. This is partially the reverse of the Circle Hill stage 2018 (SS 6). The first part of the stage (approximately 15 km) was used in this direction as SS 13 in 2015. The last 10 km (approximately) were used as the finish of SS 2 and SS 7 in 2019.

SS 13 Waipori Gorge 13 km A classic Otago stage run uphill. Run in this direction in 2019 (SS 6) and 2015 (SS 12). It will be one of the slower stages run on a relatively twisty public road alongside the Waipori River.

SS 15 Kuri Bush 15 km Needs no introduction. Numerous in-car videos available online. This is the signature Otago stage starting at Kuri Bush on the Otago Coast. Huge crests requiring massive commitment rewarding the brave. In 2019 this was SS 4. This is how it’s done... http://www.otagorally.com/home/rally-media/otago-rally-videos/590- hayden-paddon-s-record-breaking-kuri-bush-stage

SS 16 McIntosh Road 8 km A popular short stage. Starts on fast public roads before a short tarmac section at the spectator point. Finishes on a tighter ‘dry weather’ road with a huge drop over a crest. Last used in 2019 (SS 5). http://www.otagorally.com/home/rally-media/otago-rally-videos/478-hayden-paddon-ss15-mcintosh-road
