Signed Date Abstract This thesis demonstrates the ways in which Elizabeth Gaskell and Margaret Oliphant drew upon their domestic identities as wives and mothers to write in radical, yet subtle, ways which had the potential to educate and inform their young female readership. While in the nineteenth century the domestic space was viewed as the rightful place for women, I show how both Gaskell and Oliphant expanded this idea to demonstrate within their novels and short stories the importance of what I term an 'extended domesticity'. -

Islamic Feminism Revisited Haideh Moghissi ver a year has passed since millions of Iranian people poured into the streets pro- testing the rigged presidential elections that reinstated Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in office for a second term. The powerful yet remarkably nonviolent protest movement, in particular the images of beautiful young women at the front rows of street demonstrations, their clearly secular appearances, their courageous encounters with police and plain- clothed thugs, and the killing of a young woman, Neda Agha- Soltan, whose murder was captured on camera, mesmerized the world. These images helped challenge the long- held perceptions about religion- steeped “Muslim” women and the political and emotional attachment of people to the Islamic state and its values and practices. The protests also helped silence, temporarily at least, the cultural relativist academics and commentators who since the mid- 1990s had been beating the drums of secularism’s end in Iran and had tried to push Islamic feminism as the only homegrown, locally produced, and hence culturally suitable project for changing the lot of women in Iran and indeed in Muslim- majority countries. The ebbing of the street protests under the brutal pressure of security forces and the pushing underground of all forms of opposition, however, seem to have resuscitated those who support Islam as the Middle Eastern version of liberation theology. For more than a decade the proponents of the idea, through their “field research,” documentaries, and reports and in total disregard for the loud voices of the overwhelming majority of urban women (and men) with or without faith inside Iran, wittingly or unwittingly lobbied on behalf of Islamists’ proj- of ects. -

A Reflection on the Challenges for Hindu Women in the Twenty-first Century1 Neelima Shukla-Bhatt Introduction T the turn of the 21st century, it is clear that religion is not an insti- Atution of the past; it continues to be a powerful force in societies across the world. For this reason, some purely secularist and sociologi- cal theories of religion of the early twentieth century, which led to a wide spread view that religion was on the decline in the modern times, have proved to be limited, even though they are helpful in examining the social aspects of religious life.2 As Brian Hatcher suggests in a recent article, a major shortcoming of the secularist approaches to religion has been a purely dichotomous view of faith vs reason and tradition vs modernity. Instead of the demise of religion, Hatcher finds transforma- tion of religion with changing times, as proposed by sociologist Damiele Hervieu-Leger a more helpful way to understand religious phenomena (Hatcher 2006: 54–55). An aspect of religion that is widely debated with regard to need for transformation is treatment of women. In most organized religions of the world, women have not enjoyed equal rights with men. The norms assigned to them by male religious authorities have subjected them to various forms of marginalization. A major challenge for religious communities across the world today is to ensure that their religious practices and values are compatible with the ideal of gender equality as an aspect of the ideology of social justice, which is being widely upheld across the globe. -

Women in church and society Report of research done by a research team at the PU vir CHO Fika J. van Rensburg School of Biblical Studies and Bible Languages Potchefstroomse Universiteit vir CHO POTCHEFSTROOM Email: [email protected] Abstract Women in church and society: Report of research done by a research team at the PU vir CHO The research project “Women in Church and Society” was con- ducted under the auspices of one of the focus areas for research and postgraduate education at the Potchefstroomse Universiteit vir Christelike Hoër Onderwys: “Reformed Theology and the Develop- ment of the South African Society”. This focus area is based in the Faculty of Theology (PU vir CHO) and is directed by Herrie van Rooy. Project 2 of this focus area is “The socio-historic context of the Bible and its implications for the development of South African Society” and is under the leadership of Fika J. van Rensburg. The first sub-project of Project 2 to be completed is “Women in Church and Society”. It commenced in 2000 and had its fourth and final workshop in September 2002. It was managed by a five-person executive committee and had the following categories of collabo- rators: 16 PU vir CHO researchers, 10 researchers from other South African universities, 6 international researchers, 19 masters’ and doctoral students, and 21 researchers with special expertise in relevant areas. In total 48 papers1 were read and discussed at the four workshops; and most of them have either been published or are in the process of being published as articles in accredited journals. -

It must be noted , however, that the term "spiritua lity" is no lo nger an exclusively Christian , no r even an exclusively reli gious, term . Not surprisingly, therefore , fe minist spirituality is not necessaril y a C hristi an o r even a religio us pheno meno n. In fact , however, as we shall see, fe minist spirituality whether Christi an or not tends to be deeply re ligious. Consequently, o ur first task is to define spirituality and specify the meaning of C hristi an spirituality so that we can then raise the questi o n of how fe minism is related to spirituality and fin all y how feminist spirituality is related to Chris tian spirituality. -

77 Women in Ministry: Beyond the Impasse BY GRETCHEN E. ZIEGENHALS While most Christians agree that women should be allowed to exercise their God-given gifts of ministry, a sticking point between egalitarians and complementarians is whether certain leadership roles are off limits to women. Both sides want to reach consensus, but are unsure of how to bridge the gap. o we still need to question the role of women in ministry? The answer is “yes” for many conservative evangelical Christians. For Dthem, the issues surrounding women in congregational ministry still provoke heated biblical, theological, and ecclesiological debate. Despite the fact that we have women serving in even the highest offices of government, evangelicals continue to examine Scripture in search of answers to questions about women in ministry that are plaguing conservative congregations and seminaries. The issue came to a head in 2000, when the Southern Baptist Convention adopted the revised 2000 Baptist Faith & Message. To Article VI on “The Church” the statement was added: “While both men and women are gifted for service in the church, the office of pastor is limited to men as qualified by Scripture.” Article XVIII on “The Family” (which had been added in 1998) included this interpretation of women’s role in the home: “A wife is to submit herself graciously to the servant leadership of her husband even as the church willingly submits to the headship of Christ. She, being in the image of God as is her husband and thus equal to him, has the God- given responsibility to respect her husband and to serve as his helper in managing the household and nurturing the next generation.”1 78 Women and the Church What exactly is it about women in ministry that provokes such debate? And what are the arguments for preventing women from serving in church- es? While most evangelicals agree that women should be allowed to exercise their God-given gifts of ministry, the sticking point seems to be whether or not particular leadership roles are off limits to women. -

The Implications of the Dominance of Women in the Zimbabwean Music Industry for the Ordination of Women
Scriptura 86 (2004), pp. 234-240 THE IMPLICATIONS OF THE DOMINANCE OF WOMEN IN THE ZIMBABWEAN MUSIC INDUSTRY FOR THE ORDINATION OF WOMEN Lovemore Togarasei Department of Religious Studies Classics and Philosophy University of Zimbabwe Abstract There are numerous questions on gender and theology that have to be addressed in the African context. This article focuses on the dominance of women in the Zimbabwean gospel music industry. It opens with a brief history of the place of women in traditional music in Zimbabwe, then discusses gospel music and the dominance of women in this type of music. The possible factors that cause the dominance of women in the gospel music industry are then considered. The article ends with a section on the theological implications of such dominance of women, focusing on the issue of women ordination. The article concludes that, if the dominance of women in African Christianity and the teaching of the New Testament are considered, there are no convincing grounds for denying women ordination. 1. Introduction Gospel music has revolutionised the music industry in Zimbabwe. It has not only attracted followers from all age groups and social classes, it has also penetrated all sectors of the society. One can hear the music in churches, at wedding parties, at graduation parties, at birthday parties and even in beer gardens. There is, however, an interesting trend in Zimbabwean gospel music. Whereas, in other “secular” forms of music, men dominate, Zimbabwean gospel music is dominated by women. Why women have taken the gospel music industry by storm needs theological reflection that would address issues of gender in the African context. -
