Neighborhood Watch

Summer is here and our kids are on school vacation. With high gas prices, some families will probably not be leaving town on vacation, so the kids will be spending more time at home. Does your child know how to be safe at home while you are at work? There are some helpful tips to consider:

• If your child is mature enough to be home alone, provide them with a list of telephone numbers to call in case you (the parent) cannot be reached. • Advise them never to let strangers into your home. • Have your child check in with a neighbor throughout the day. • Have a plan to escape from the residence in case of a fire or other emergency. • Teach you child how to properly lock and secure all doors and windows. • Encourage your child to call 9-1-1 if they have an emergency. • Strongly advise your child not to swim in the pool during the time they are alone.

Let’s make this summer memorable and safe for everyone.

If you read the Chief’s Message on the front page of The Source, you know all about National Night Out 2008 scheduled for Saturday August 9, 2008, at La Palma Central Park from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The La Palma Neighborhood Watch Program will be at the National Night Out in support of crime prevention programs to make La Palma a safe place to work and live. We encourage everyone to participate in this event. National Night Out is about everyone getting involved. By getting involved, we are sending a clear message to criminals that we, as residents and business owners, will not tolerate crime!

I’ll see you there.

City News Brief July 2008

City Council Lowers Utility Users Tax – On June 17, the City Council voted unanimously to lower the utility users tax rate from 5% to 4% for the 2008-09 Fiscal Year. Residents and businesses should begin seeing the lower tax rates on their gas, electric, cable, and telephone bills later this summer as the utility companies implement the new rate. As a reminder, very low income residents can apply for an exemption to the utility users tax altogether. Call (714) 690-3334 for more information.

Visit the New Website – We are proud to announce the launch of our completely redesigned and enhanced website. Please visit http://cityoflapalma.org to see all the new features. If you have any comments or suggestions, please contact us at [email protected] or call (714) 690-3337.

City Street Sweepers Using Alternative Fuels – You may have noticed recently that the City’s street sweeping service has begun to use compressed natural gas (CNG) powered vehicles to sweep City streets. CNG vehicles are much cleaner burning than diesel engines and tend to be a little quieter. Cities have been required to implement alternative fuel sweepers in order to improve air quality throughout Southern California. A small monthly surcharge – $0.41 for residents – has been added to trash bills to cover the cost of these new vehicles.

Volunteers Needed – Be a part of the planning for La Palma Days. This year’s parade will be held on Saturday, November 8 and we need volunteers for the following committees: Entertainment, Parade & Band Review, Activities, Cultural & Historical, and the La Palma Pageant. If you would like to volunteer, please call (714) 690-3350.

City Starts Free Universal Waste Recycling Program – The Cities of La Palma and Cypress have begun offering residents a Free Universal Waste Recycling Program. U-Waste consists of things like batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL’s), and any item containing mercury. These items are not allowed to be deposited in landfills and are considered hazardous to the environment if placed in a trash container. Residents can pick-up small green recycling bags for their household batteries and fluorescent bulbs at City Hall. Batteries can be dropped off at City Hall. You can drop off all other U-Waste at any of the following locations: Ganahl Lumber, 10742 Los Alamitos Blvd, Los Alamitos, CA 90720 Jiffy Lube, 4942 Lincoln Ave, Cypress, CA 90630 Jiffy Lube, 3311 Katella Ave, Los Alamitos, CA 90720 True Value Hardware, 7612 Katella Ave, Stanton, CA 90608 If you have any questions about the new U-Waste Recycling Program, please contact our Recycling Hotline at (714) 229-6747.
