The subject of their project was Doris Donovan, a woman who uses a cane for her daily walking needs. Donovan visited the class to be interviewed by the students. They asked her to describe what she liked about her cane, what added features would make the cane more useful and problems she experienced that a redesign could alleviate. Next, the students broke into three separate groups, charged with redesigning a cane for Donovan. After the groups finished, the class brainstormed as to how to improve on each group's design by combining the best features into one cane. Now, Donovan's cane has LED lights controlled by a toggle switch for seeing in the dark, magnets on the feet of the cane for picking up dropped keys and a toggle switch to represent a future addition of connecting with LifeAlert or a phone app in case she falls or is in trouble. Several of the students went to Fort White Elementary School to present their project to all the fifth grade classes. In Tallahassee, the concept of nudge-nudge wink-wink employment deals is by no means unfamiliar. It is, after all, home to one of the Southeast’s athletic powerhouses — and the Florida Legislature, where the potential for shenanigans can be as boundless as the imaginations of the public servants who toil there. Of course, most public servants take care not to cross ethical or legal boundaries. But some do. That’s why legislators, and legislative employees, should take extra care to avoid even the appearance of impropriety. An investigation by The Associated Press’ Gary Fineout bears that out. Fineout reviewed a year’s worth of requests by legislative staff to “moonlight” in second jobs. Many were unremarkable — tutors, flight instruc- tors or restaurant servers. LOCAL TENNIS SIGNING DAY Florida coach Mullen snags ‘It’s a lifetime sport’ dual-threat QB

By MARK LONG Associated Press GAINESVILLE — New Florida coach Dan Mullen has his dual- threat quarterback of the future, maybe even the now. Emory Jones, of Franklin, Georgia, signed a national let- ter of intent with the Gators on Wednesday. He chose Florida over Florida State and Ohio State. He expects to enroll in school next month and compete for the starting job in spring practice. The 6-foot-3, 196-pound Jones projects as an ideal fit in Mullen’s spread-option scheme. Mullen first recruited Jones to Mississippi State, believing he could be next on a list of devel- opmental success stories that includes Alex Smith at Utah, Tim Tebow at Florida and Dak Prescott and Nick Fitzgerald with the Bulldogs. “You have to find somebody that can handle the responsibil- ities of not just the quarterback position for the football team but the quarterback at the University of Florida, which is something special,” Mullen said. “You know, I think his comfort with us and our comfort with him know that he is somebody that can handle that, can handle that scrutiny, handle that pressure, handle Photos by ERIC JACKSON/Lake City Reporter those expectations and really not An older group of local tennis players meet every week on the courts at Country Club at Lake City.
