Press Release November 15, 2014 No. M 215/14 Sports Car World Endurance Championship WEC, round 7 in Sakhir/Bahrain - Race GT Best Porsche 911 RSR narrowly misses podium placing Stuttgart. Despite an inspired charge through the field on the Bahrain International Circuit it was not enough for the Porsche 911 RSR to secure a podium spot for the first time in this year’s sports car World Endurance Championship, two weeks after a brilliant double victory in Shanghai. In the number 91 Porsche Team Manthey 911 RSR, Porsche works drivers Jörg Bergmeister (Germany) and Richard Lietz (Austria) scored fourth place in the highly competitive GTE-Pro class at the penultimate round of the season in the Kingdom of Bahrain at the Persian Gulf. Their factory pilot col- leagues and Shanghai winners Frédéric Makowiecki and Patrick Pilet from France saw the flag in fifth at the wheel of the number 92 vehicle. It was already clear in qualifying that the Porsche 911 RSR would face a difficult race in the hot and humid weather conditions on the 5.407 kilometre Grand Prix circuit outside the capital of Manama. For this reason, the Porsche Manthey squad decided to use a different strategy than the opposition. During the early first safety car phase, the two works vehicles from Weissach were called into the pits for servicing, while the competition stayed out on the track. At first this strategy looked as if it might work: After the first hour of racing, Richard Lietz was running at the head of the GT field with Frédéric Makowiecki close behind on second place.

  • Porsche and Michelin Clinch the Season's FIA WEC Drivers' Crown
MEDIA INFORMATION November 21, 2015 2015 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) 6 Hours of Bahrain Porsche and Michelin clinch the season’s FIA WEC Drivers’ crown and LM GTE Cups in Bahrain to add to their 2015 Manufacturers’ title The 2015 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) concluded with Michelin’s partner Porsche claiming the top prizes in both the LM P1 and LM GTE Pro classes. Following its return to world class endurance racing in 2014, the Stuttgart brand emerged as the discipline’s team to beat this season despite year-long pressure from fellow Michelin runners Audi (in LM P1) and Ferrari (in LM GTE Pro). By providing tyres developed to meet the specific needs of its different manufacturer teams in this championship which permits open competition between tyre firms, Michelin enabled all of its partners and drivers to fight at the sharp end in the course of the 2015 season. “I would like to congratulate Porsche on its different titles and I am proud of the role Michelin played in its success,” said Michelin Motorsport Director Pascal Couasnon. “We work closely with all of our partners and we were at their side throughout this year’s FIA WEC which was of an extremely high level in both sporting and technological terms. It’s important to remember that this year’s cars marked a big step forward, especially the LM P1 prototypes which boasted power outputs and aerodynamic downforce of an unprecedented level.” The performance, durability and versatility of Michelin’s 2015 range of endurance racing tyres were illustrated by the high grip they delivered in cold weather at Silverstone and Spa, the quadruple-plus stints they permitted in LM P1 at Le Mans, their consistency and also their ability to double stint at the season’s most exacting circuits in high temperatures.

  • The 2014 6 Hours of Bahrain: Tyre Strategies and World Titles
MEDIA INFORMATION November 2014 2014 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) 6 Hours of Bahrain The 2014 6 Hours of Bahrain: tyre strategies and world titles The 2014 6 Hours of Bahrain turned out to be an emotional event where Michelin tyres played a fundament role in the final outcome. The result settled a number of Drivers’ titles, with Toyota Racing’s Antony DAVIDSON and Sébastien BUEMI securing the top prize in LM P1, while the LM GTE Pro crown was sealed by AF Corse/Ferrari racers Gianmaria BRUNI and Toni VILANDER. Tyre strategy key in qualifying Qualifying practice for the 2014 6 Hours of Bahrain produced a contest in which tyre strategy helped Porsche Team to snatch pole position from Toyota Racing by mere tenths of a second. The German squad chose MICHELIN’s ‘soft high temperature’ compound, while Audi Sport Team Joest – which was represented by a single R18 e-tron quattro in qualifying – and Toyota Racing both opted for the French firm’s ‘medium high temperature’ alternative. The fastest lap was eventually posted by the N°14 Porsche 919 Hybrid in the hands of DUMAS/JANI who recorded a best time of 1m41.897s round the 5.412km Sakhir International Circuit, and an average lap of 1m43.145s. The N°8 Toyota TS040 Hybrid (DAVIDSON/BUEMI) was second fastest (+0.265s), followed by the N°20 Porsche 919 Hybrid (BERNHARD/HARTLEY, +1.046s). While Porsche’s choice proved judicious for qualifying, the question was whether it would be suitable for the start of the 6 Hours of Bahrain which took place with track temperatures standing at around 40°C, since the tyres used for qualifying had to be fitted for the first stint of the race? Romain DUMAS wasn’t sure… “I’ve been nominated to start the race in the N°14 Porsche and I think I will put on a good show for the spectators on soft compound tyres.

Porsche intends to conclude its extremely successful 2019 motorsport sea- son with another highlight at the eight-hour race of the FIA World Endurance Champi- onship (WEC) in Bahrain on 14 December. The sports car manufacturer from Stuttgart holds a convincing lead in the world championship after the new Porsche 911 RSR claimed a one-two at Silverstone (Great Britain) and Shanghai (China) as well as po- dium finishes at Fuji (Japan). Both Porsche duos are also at the top of the drivers’ standings. In the GTE-Am classification, three customer teams field a total of five Por- sche 911 RSR in last year’s spec at the long-distance race in the Gulf region. The race The Bahrain International Circuit has hosted the Formula 1 Grand Prix regularly since 2004. The WEC world sports car championship was first contested on the 5.412-kilo- metre circuit close to the capital Manama in its 2012 inaugural season – the only ex- ception was in the 2018/2019 Super Season. At this year’s return to the challenging racetrack, the FIA WEC will race over eight hours for the first time. High daytime tem- peratures, falling temperatures at dusk and sand at times covering the asphalt make the race a big challenge for teams, engineers and drivers. Tyre wear on the Grand Prix circuit with its 15 turns is regarded as a critical factor for potential success.

  • Michelin's Tyres for the 2014 6 Hours of Bahrain
MEDIA INFORMATION November 2014 2014 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) 6 Hours of Bahrain Michelin’s tyres for the 2014 6 Hours of Bahrain The challenge for tyres at Sakhir International Circuit The tyres that Michelin has taken to the Sakhir International Circuit for the 6 Hours of Bahrain face a challenging cocktail of ground temperatures of up to 40°C and a treacherous coating of sand on the surface of the technically-demanding 5.412km track. Like many of today’s modern circuits, Bahrain’s showpiece was designed in 2002 by Hermann Tilke who also penned the layouts at Sepang, Malaysia, and Shanghai, China. The philosophy favoured by the German architect places the emphasis on a combination of short straights and slow turns, which means that Sakhir features a high number of heavy braking zones and frequent hard acceleration which are always a punishing test of tyres. Surface conditions tend to evolve considerably as the layer of sand deposited by the desert breeze before the start is gradually cleared as more and more rubber is laid on the ground. The teams are consequently likely to run hard compound tyres for the early part of the race before switching to softer alternatives during the evening. The result could consequently depend on responsive tyre strategies by ensuring that the teams’ respective cars are equipped with the ideal solution at the right time. • FRUSTRATING FINALE for TOYOTA GAZOO RACING Saturday 19 November 2016
FRUSTRATING FINALE FOR TOYOTA GAZOO RACING Saturday 19 November 2016 TOYOTA GAZOO Racing experienced a disappointing end to the 2016 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) season in the 6 Hours of Bahrain. The #5 TS050 HYBRID of Anthony Davidson, Sébastien Buemi and Kazuki Nakajima was the lead TOYOTA in fourth, just the third time this year that the team has missed out on the podium. Stéphane Sarrazin, Mike Conway and Kamui Kobayashi in the #6 car began the race with an outside chance of the drivers’ World Championship, but fifth place was not enough to overhaul the Porsche #2 crew of Romain Dumas, Neel Jani and Marc Lieb. The #6 crew finished the season a creditable third in the drivers’ standings, 15 points behind the champions, with their #5 counterparts 8th following a series of misfortunes this year. TOYOTA’s finally tally from the nine-race season stands at one win, seven podium finishes and 229 points with the TS050 HYBRID, earning third position in the manufacturers’ World Championship. Today’s race represented Audi’s final appearance in the championship. The team marked the occasion by displaying messages on both TS050 HYBRIDs and presenting a commemorative banner to the Head of Audi Motorsport, Dr Wolfgang Ullrich. When the race got under way, Kamui in the #6 fought hard with #7 Audi but could not stay ahead, instead he put pressure on from fifth with Sébastien just behind in the sister car. The Porsche #2 suffered a puncture after almost one hour, elevating the #5 to fourth place, with the #6 now in fifth as the sun set and darkness took hold at the Bahrain International Circuit.
