Fair Game By TOM JOHNSON The grunion are running, the grunion are running! The grunion are running this weekend. They come ashore in the surf for “three to four consecutive nights, beginning on the nights of the full moons and new moons,” according to California Beaches. “Spawning occurs after high tides and continues for several hours. Peak spawning is from late March to early June.” Okay, so here’s what I know, you take a bucket and, of course, a fishing license if you’re 16 or older, and you catch the little suckers with your bare hands. Then what, you ask? You cook and eat them. Online you can find recipes to make “grunion” tacos or grilled grunion. Who knew? I think I’m more of a spectator. Happy fishing. Best times are tonight from 11:20 p.m. to 1:20 a.m.; tomorrow (Saturday), midnight to 2 a.m.; and Sunday, 12:40 to 2:40 a.m. • • • CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) is hosting its bi-annual “Drill the Skills” event tomorrow, March 23, from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Newport Beach Fire Station on Acacia. It’s open to all CERT volunteers who have the opportunity to practice their skills or just volunteer to help. Then, next Thursday, March 28, at 6 p.m., CERT presents their Earthquake and Tsunami Awareness Workshop in the Civic Center Community Room. The event is held in conjunction with Tsunami Awareness Week. It’s open to all Orange County residents and features guest presenters from the state. You don’t have to register to attend. I asked our Fire Chief Chip Duncan about what the program means to the community: “CERT is important to develop in our community, because it enables our neighborhoods to stand alone during a disaster. Our residents need to be able to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours after a major disaster. Neighborhoods should be able to manage minor incidents so fire and PD can respond to larger incidents. This boils down to neighbors helping neighbors. Essentially our CERT team members are our force multipliers.” The Chief reminded me that under Matt Brisbois’ leadership, our CERT program “is second to none.” CERT has more coming in May. You can check it all out here. • • • When we talk about local news, what’s more local to Newport Beach than USC? If you don’t believe me, drive the streets of Balboa Island during football season and check out all of the banners hanging to support the Trojans. That being said, Carol Folt, the former chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has become the 12th president in the school’s history and the first woman. She begins July 1. USC, of course, has had a couple of tough years with the school dean drug issue, the misconduct of the school’s longtime gynecologist and, most recently, the ongoing school admissions scandal. Add to that that their football team has stunk it up recently and she has a lot of work ahead of her. • • • Segerstrom Center for the Arts has dropped its appeal fighting the approval of the proposed new Orange County Museum of Art in Costa Mesa. OCMA is in the midst of moving from their Newport Beach facility and now in temporary South Coast Plaza Village digs, to their eventual final home. Back in January, Segerstrom Center President Terrence Dwyer appealed the Costa Mesa Planning Commission’s approval of the plan for a nearly 54,000-square- foot museum. He resigned a month later. A coincidence? I think not. Dwyer was definitely swimming upstream against that decision. His statement upon exiting was that it was “the right time to leave professionally.” OCMA is scheduled to open sometime in 2021.
