The title of the present lot is taken from a poem by Eleanor Farjoen (1881-1965) titled Pan-Worship, 1908.

The work features a number of figures from classical mythology. There are a gathering of Naiads, or water nymphs, who in Greek mythology presided over fountains, rivers and springs. Also depicted in the lower 63 left hand corner of the composition is the Greek god Pan playing his pipes, which he used to lure Naiads from the water to dance for his delight. These figures associated with classical Greek mythology and spirituality resonated with Hockin’s Theosophical beliefs.

During the early years he had used photographs as an aide-memoire for his close examination of landscapes during his brief Pre-Raphaelite period. For a time he belonged to the Leeds Photographic Society but in later years it was his sons Arthur and Louis who were members.

In this Manchester scene the ghostly photographic images of the buildings is especially visible under the row of shops to the right of centre. Quite why the artist chose to use this method is unknown except perhaps as a quicker way to execute a body of work; however, examples are few in number.

The Regiment went through two further name 77 changes when in 1827 it was retitled the 50th Duke of Clarence’s Regiment of Foot, in honour of the future William IV and then as the 50th Queen’s Own Regiment of Foot in 1831. In 1881 the Regiment was amalgamated to form The Queen’s Own Royal West Kent Regiment. Following further amalgamations with different units the Regiment is now represented by the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment, the senior English line infantry regiment.

James Princip Barnes Beadle was one of Britian’s leading artists of historical and military subjects. While many of his scenes represented contemporary military events such as the Franco-Prussian War, the Boer War and the First World War he is perhaps most associated for depictions of the Napoleonic Wars and in particular the Peninsular Campaign, indeed, Beadle made a number of sketching trips to the battlefields of Portugal and Spain.

The present lot depicts a familiar scene to many of those who have visited London’s Hyde Park with the recognisable King’s Troop of the Royal Horse Artillery trotting along the South Carriage Drive with the Albert Memorial in the Background. The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery are responsible for the firing of Royal Salutes in Hyde Park on both Royal Anniversaries and State Occasions, and providing a gun carriage and team of black horses for State and Military funerals.
