Whether you’re joining us in Springfield or in Du Quoin, our state fairs bring together residents and visitors alike, to celebrate all that Illinois has to offer when we stand together – an all-the- more important mission this year. Illinois’ proud agricultural tradition has long been the force that drives our state forward, and the last 18 months have been no different. In March of 2020, when the world seemed to come to a halt, our state’s number one industry kept right on going. After all, there were still crops and animals to care for, deliveries to make, and people to feed. So, even in the face of a global pandemic, Illinois’ farmers, small businesses and commodity groups all came together to keep our food chain secure, a true testament to the vibrancy of the sector. And because no industry was immune to the pains of the last year, the Pritzker administration directed $5 million to help with livestock losses and other costs through our Business Interruption Grant program.

The locker room renovation was made possible via a substantial leadership gift from James C. Metzger ’83. The renovation included the installation of 48 new lockers, a remodel of the bathroom and shower area, and new carpeting and flooring. Hollman, Inc., a leading manufacturer of collegiate lockers, designed and installed the new custom lockers, constructed specifically for use with lacrosse as they feature space to hold multiple helmets, sticks and are equipped with a phone charging station and cushions for comfort. Milburn Flooring oversaw the installation of the new flooring. In addition to his profound gift, Metzger also led a matching gift campaign for alumni of the program to have one of the lockers named in their honor. Each locker is named in honor of a Pride men’s lacrosse alumnus and Metzger matched each gift for all 48 lockers. • When Good People Think Strange Things About Dogs
When Good People Think Strange Things About Dogs Patrick Burns I am thrilled to be here today among all you canine professionals. You see the folks in this room are more than dog trainers. You talk dogs, sleep dogs, write dogs, and debate dogs. You’re not just dog trainers.... You are also dog debaters, dog listeners, dog commentators, dog bloggers, dog list-serv managers, dog authors, dog newsletter editors…. and yes … even dog conference presenters. You are the people who shape – or could shape – a great deal of dog culture in this country. Dog culture. How many of you have thought about culture in the world of dogs? Perhaps we should think of that more because, I will argue, it is culture that is responsible for the fact that so many good people think strange things about dogs. 1 Strange Things To start, look around. How many people in this room are non-white? A strange question, eh? You thought this session was about dogs, didn’t you? The point is that for most of the world, this discussion is strange. In much of Africa, Asia, and Latin America, dogs are not allowed indoors. Who lets an animal indoors that may have fleas and ticks, and that may eat its own feces? Who allows such an animal on the bed? Who lets it lick a child in the face? No one! So, to put a point on it, this obsession with dogs that we have is, for the most part, a European cultural affliction. Most of the world, believe it or not, does not have this affliction.

4-H Steubenite A Publication of Cornell Cooperative Extension – Steuben County www.putknowledgetowork.org January/February/March 2017 Steuben County 4-H Member Excels in A National Dairy Judging Contest! Paige Demun, 11th year Dairy Dreamers 4-H member, earned a spot on the 2016 NYS 4-H Dairy Judging Team that placed 3rd overall against 28 other state teams at the National 4-H Dairy Judging Contest in Madison, WI in conjunction with the World Dairy Expo. Paige placed 5th individual overall out of approximately 110 contestants. She earned her spot on this team by placing 3rd overall at the 2016 NYS Fair 4-H Dairy Judging Contest. The national contest consisted of classes of Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, Holstein and Jersey cattle. Dairy cattle judging contributes to developing and growing 4-H members to become leaders in the dairy industry. Dairy cattle judging requires participants to understand the concepts of dairy cow conformation and provide sets of oral reasons for choosing one cow over another. Learning to judge dairy cattle helps develop confidence in one’s ability to make and defend good decisions. They learn careful observation, thoughtful evaluation, intelligent decision making and justification of the decision, which equals organized thinking. Dairy cattle judging is an excellent opportunity for youth to learn about dairy cattle and the dairy industry and develop skills to face the future challenges of the dairy industry and life.
