Animals Asia Foundation Dog Breeding - Position Paper February 2010 1 Dog Breeding - Position Paper Feb 2010: Each year across the world many millions of unowned and unwanted dogs are destroyed due to irresponsible dog breeders and owners. Animals Asia supports the de- sexing of all dogs and cats to reduce the number of unwanted companion animals and also supports the adoption of unowned dogs and cats. We are against the breeding and sale of dogs and cats from dog breeders and pet shops. Animals Asia is particularly opposed to individuals operating so-called ‘puppy farms’, where dogs are bred in appalling conditions purely for profit with a total disregard for the health and welfare of both the adult dogs and puppies. Adult bitches are kept in small pens with little or no access to daylight, no social contact with other dogs or other humans and no space to exercise or play. They are bred continuously until they become too old and are then discarded. Puppies bred under such intensive conditions often suffer from genetic abnormalities and other health-related issues. Puppies are frequently removed from their mothers when they are too young, leading to further potential health and behavioural issues. Puppies bred in such intensive conditions are often sold through newspaper adverts, via the internet, at pet shops or in pet superstores. The general promotion of purebred dogs and the desire to breed animals for specific physical and behavioural traits by many dog breeders has lead to significant health and welfare problems in many breeds. In addition to this the emphasis on pure breeds can cause or exacerbate disrespect for mixed breed animals within a community. -

If we struggle to discern when this point is reached, why do we breed compromised, short-lived animals in the first place? If we struggle to judge when environmental conditions cause an unacceptable QoL, why not breed appropriately for modern environments? In breeding pedigree dogs, five major problems arise: (1) some breed standards and selection practices run counter to dog welfare; (2) insufficient selection pressure seems to be exerted on some traits that would improve animal well-being and produce dogs better suited to modern environments; (3) the incidence of certain inherited defects in some breeds is unacceptably high; (4) the dearth of registered animals of certain breeds in particular countries makes it extremely difficult for breeders to avoid mating close relatives; and (5) there may be financial disincentives for veterinarians to reduce the incidence of inherited diseases. Before we can judge when behavioural or morphological changes caused by selective breeding result in an unacceptable QoL, we have to know which are prevalent. This paper reviews progress in two Australian schemes to monitor trends in the prevalence of inherited disorders in dogs and to promote behavioural phenotypes likely to cope with contemporary domestic environments. -

Mouse Breeding Colony Management 1. Mouse Reproduction A. General Mouse Information i. The average mouse lives approximately 2.5 years; however, the reproductive life span of mice is significantly shorter at 7-8 months. ii. Most mice reach sexual maturity (males and females) at 4-7 weeks of age. Younger mice generally produce smaller litters and therefore are not typically mated until they reach 6-8 weeks, of age. Mice that have been housed alone or in same-sex pairs will usually not breed successfully if they are older than 6-8 months. iii. The mouse estrous cycle is 4-5 days in length. Mice cycle continuously throughout the year (non-seasonal breeders). Female mice are only receptive to males when they are in estrus. Mating typically occurs at night (lights off). Ovulation occurs 8-12 hours after the onset of estrous. iv. If fertilization occurs, fetuses can be palpated by day 14. v. Gestation in mice is typically 19-21 days (strain dependent). vi. Parturition in mice may last 1-3 hours and frequently occurs at night. Females will go into estrus within 24 hours of parturition and are sexually receptive during this time. vii. Litter size varies among strains, but averages 4-12 pups. Inbred mice tend to have smaller litters than outbred mice. viii. Mice are typically weaned at 21-28 days or at 10g of body weight. The Purdue Animal Care and Use Committee requires that mouse pups be weaned at 21 days unless PACUC approval is given on an approved animal use protocol. See Policy attached. -

Reading Between The Lines (Or, separating fact from fiction) Dane Outreach has become extremely concerned about the large volume of incorrect information unknowledgeable, unethical, or uncaring and unscrupulous breeders* are giving to the potential Dane purchaser about Great Danes. Much of this misinformation is used as a “selling point” by puppy mills and backyard breeders to the uninformed Dane purchaser. The first line of defense for the potential purchaser would be to do their homework and educate themselves on the Great Dane breed. There are many excellent articles at www.gdca, www.DaneOutreach.com and www.ginnie.com on Great Danes. Below are some of the claims commonly used by unethical breeders and correct information for item. Rare or Unusual Colors No such thing! While some of the Great Dane colors may be more common than others, the breed does not have “rare” or “unusual” colors. Dogs labeled “rare” are almost always mismarks, considered a disqualification by the breed standard, cannot be shown, and in general should not be bred. Great Danes come in six recognized colors (fawn, brindle, black, blue, harlequin and mantle) and are divided into five color families (1. fawn/brindle, 2. black out of black breeding, 3. black out of blue breeding, 4. black out of harlequin breeding, 5. harlequin). The Great Dane Club of America is very specific on what color families can and cannot be bred together. Crossing color families can result in “off” or mismarked colors. While these dogs can certainly go on to make excellent pets, the colors are not desired, cannot be shown, never should be bred and should not be considered a desirable trait. -

ARCTIC SPITZ BREED STANDARD Overall Impression The overall impression is of a small but powerful northern- breed dog with substantial bone, small erect ears, and with typical ‘husky’ markings. Size Toy typically 5-9 pounds and under 10” at the shoulder. Mini over 9 pounds and up to 15” tall. Standard 15-18” tall and generally between 18-25 pounds. Dogs are heavy for their height, with substantial bone. First generation (F1) outcross or crossbred dogs should not be penalized for excessive size as long as they are smaller than 35 pounds or 20”. Small but sturdy should be the watchword. Fragile or fine- boned substance at the expense of weight is faulty, but so is an excessively heavy dog which cannot move athletically. When weight and height place the dog in different size categories, height should be used for judging purposes. A larger or smaller dog is not more correct by the standard, as long as they are within standard. Temperament The Arctic Spitz is a joyful, affectionate dog with great humor and character. Shyness of any sort is to be SEVERELY penalized. Dogs should be outgoing, confident, but non-aggressive and social with people and other dogs. Exuberance should not be penalized or mistaken for aggression. Extremely shy dogs and aggressive dogs of any level shall be disqualified. Color & Markings All colors and patterns allowed. Ideally a white or cream ground with markings on the head, face, and back in the typical ‘husky’ pattern, including a generally symmetrical mask. The markings may be of any color but merle and brindle are not preferred. -

Purebred Dog Breeds into the Twenty-First Century: Achieving Genetic Health for Our Dogs BY JEFFREY BRAGG WHAT IS A CANINE BREED? What is a breed? To put the question more precisely, what are the necessary conditions that enable us to say with conviction, "this group of animals constitutes a distinct breed?" In the cynological world, three separate approaches combine to constitute canine breeds. Dogs are distinguished first by ancestry , all of the individuals descending from a particular founder group (and only from that group) being designated as a breed. Next they are distinguished by purpose or utility, some breeds existing for the purpose of hunting particular kinds of game,others for the performance of particular tasks in cooperation with their human masters, while yet others owe their existence simply to humankind's desire for animal companionship. Finally dogs are distinguished by typology , breed standards (whether written or unwritten) being used to describe and to recognize dogs of specific size, physical build, general appearance, shape of head, style of ears and tail, etc., which are said to be of the same breed owing to their similarity in the foregoing respects. The preceding statements are both obvious and known to all breeders and fanciers of the canine species. Nevertheless a correct and full understanding of these simple truisms is vital to the proper functioning of the entire canine fancy and to the health and well being of the animals which are the object of that fancy. It is my purpose in this brief to elucidate the interrelationship of the above three approaches, to demonstrate how distortions and misunderstandings of that interrelationship now threaten the health of all of our dogs and the very existence of the various canine breeds, and to propose reforms which will restore both balanced breed identity and genetic health to CKC breeds. -
