Williams1,2 Abstract Background: Despite renewed interest in studying the safety and efficacy of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy for the treatment of psychological disorders, the enrollment of racially diverse participants and the unique presentation of psychopathology in this population has not been a focus of this potentially ground-breaking area of research. In 1993, the United States National Institutes of Health issued a mandate that funded research must include participants of color and proposals must include methods for achieving diverse samples. Methods: A methodological search of psychedelic studies from 1993 to 2017 was conducted to evaluate ethnoracial differences in inclusion and effective methods of recruiting peopple of color. Results: Of the 18 studies that met full criteria (n = 282 participants), 82.3% of the participants were non-Hispanic White, 2.5% were African-American, 2.1% were of Latino origin, 1.8% were of Asian origin, 4.6% were of indigenous origin, 4.6% were of mixed race, 1.8% identified their race as “other,” and the ethnicity of 8.2% of participants was unknown. There were no significant differences in recruitment methodologies between those studies that had higher (> 20%) rates of inclusion. Conclusions: As minorities are greatly underrepresented in psychedelic medicine studies, reported treatment outcomes may not generalize to all ethnic and cultural groups. -

Professor David J Nutt
2016 BAP LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Professor David J Nutt David Nutt received the BAP Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2016 summer meeting in Brighton. It gives me much pleasure to write about his long and very productive career in both preclinical and clinical psychopharmacology. I am primarily emphasizing his scientific achievements, both internationally and domestic, and his role in making the public aware of the need for evidence-based clinical science. It is scarcely necessary to detail his commitment to the BAP both as a former President and also editor of the Journal of Psychopharmacology for over 25 years. I have known David for nearly 35 years ever since he joined the MRC Clinical Pharmacology Unit in Oxford and undertook preclinical research for his MD. His enormous enthusiasm for both basic and clinical pharmacology and his impressive abilities were apparent from the outset, and in just 3 years we published together 11 papers and a book chapter, all in major journals (he also published work with other colleagues). A particular interest of David was the translation of basic research to clinical studies in psychiatry, something both David Grahame-Smith, the Unit Director, and I were already enthusiastic about. He then undertook clinical research in psychiatry in Oxford before appointments at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, the University of Bristol and now Imperial College, London. David’s commitment to communicating clinical pharmacology research to the public is, of course, known to many people, and he has been tireless in demonstrating the need for evidence-based decision making when discussing the risks and benefits of drugs, particularly recreational drugs. -

Soma and Haoma: Ayahuasca Analogues from the Late Bronze Age
ORIGINAL ARTICLE Journal of Psychedelic Studies 3(2), pp. 104–116 (2019) DOI: 10.1556/2054.2019.013 First published online July 25, 2019 Soma and Haoma: Ayahuasca analogues from the Late Bronze Age MATTHEW CLARK* School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), Department of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics, University of London, London, UK (Received: October 19, 2018; accepted: March 14, 2019) In this article, the origins of the cult of the ritual drink known as soma/haoma are explored. Various shortcomings of the main botanical candidates that have so far been proposed for this so-called “nectar of immortality” are assessed. Attention is brought to a variety of plants identified as soma/haoma in ancient Asian literature. Some of these plants are included in complex formulas and are sources of dimethyl tryptamine, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, and other psychedelic substances. It is suggested that through trial and error the same kinds of formulas that are used to make ayahuasca in South America were developed in antiquity in Central Asia and that the knowledge of the psychoactive properties of certain plants spreads through migrants from Central Asia to Persia and India. This article summarizes the main arguments for the botanical identity of soma/haoma, which is presented in my book, The Tawny One: Soma, Haoma and Ayahuasca (Muswell Hill Press, London/New York). However, in this article, all the topics dealt with in that publication, such as the possible ingredients of the potion used in Greek mystery rites, an extensive discussion of cannabis, or criteria that we might use to demarcate non-ordinary states of consciousness, have not been elaborated. -

In keeping with the stated goals of this section of the Journal to promote research in transpersonal psychology, the focus is on the methods and trends designs which are being employed in investigations rather than during the findings on this topic. However, some recently published the books and monographs provide good summaries of the recent last findings relevant to understanding psychoactive substances ten (Cohen & Krippner, 1985b; Dobkin de Rios, 1984;Dobkin de years Rios & Winkelman, 1989b; Ratsch, 1990; Reidlinger, 1990). Currently, no study has been published with the intent of establishing optimal microdose concentrations of LSD in an animal model.
