PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

  • Anthrax Volume 8 Full Album Download Anthrax: the Story Behind Every Album Cover
anthrax volume 8 full album download Anthrax: the story behind every album cover. Unlike Slayer, Anthrax have always had a huge amount of input into their cover art, especially drummer Charlie Benante. Seizing control of the band’s aesthetic after the widely-ridiculed Fistful Of Metal sleeve, Benante has conceived, overseen and approved every image the band have since stamped their name on, tracing an artistic line from the garish excesses of the 80s, through the moody, minimalist 90s, to the hip superhero likenesses and ‘Pentathrax’ insignia of their post-millennial graphic design. In 2016 Charlie told Artist Direct “That’s one of the reasons I still take the time and effort to make an album cover: I want our audience to get lost in it.” Here are the stories behind every Anthrax sleeve… Fistful Of Metal (1984) “The cover was all wrong, but we didn’t have the budget to do anything else,” admits Scott Ian in his 2014 autobiography I’m The Man . The notorious sleeve was conceived by short-lived frontman Neil Turbin (whose homemade glove is depicted on the fist) and painted by a friend of guitarist Dan Spitz, who clinched the job when he designed the band’s iconic logo. It often ends up in ‘worst cover of all time’ lists, a status the band agreed with, although Scott says he’s grown fonder of it over the years “just because it’s so goofy”, reasoning “all the big thrash debut albums… had terrible covers.” Spreading The Disease (1985) Boasting surely the most famous sneaker soles in heavy metal history, the cover art for Spreading The Disease was produced by designer Peter Corriston and illustrator Dave Heffernan.

  • Rock Album Discography Last Up-Date: September 27Th, 2021
Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.

1 Jeroen Buts Master Engels The Thematical and Stylistic Evolution of Heavy Metal Lyrics and Imagery From the 70s to Present Day Master scriptie Faculteit Letteren en Wijsbegeerte Promotor: Prof. Dr. Gert Buelens 2 Prologue You cannot make me feel guilty/ I don't give a shit about respect I won't join your moral masturbation/ I'm the prodigal son gone off the tracks You cannot make me feel sorry/ I don't give a damn about your pride I'm the cat-piss on your carpet/ The last crushing thought before you die Don't fit in your picture Don't fit in your world Don't match all the lies you feed your kids Feel no loyalty/ This deal was made without me Sure I never signed it/ Your contracts don't apply to me I'll fuck your dog/ Do you still wanna get along with me? I'd rape your daughter/ On payment of a small fee I'll fuck your dog/ Do you still wanna get along with me? I'd rape your daughter/ How much would you pay? (“Dead Serious and Highly Professional”, The Ocean) If someone were to tell you, dear reader, that heavy metal is just a louder, faster and more formulaic version of that popular musical genre which defined the late 70s, called hard rock, that someone would probably be wrong. The above lyric contains several elements which indicate just how incomplete such a statement would be. Most importantly, it divides those who read it almost instantly: a metal fan, even if his taste is for a different subgenre of metal, will recognize a specific quality in this text.

  • Renaissance Reception of Classical Poetry in Fracastoro's Morbus
Renaissance Reception of Classical Poetry in Fracastoro’s Morbus Gallicus DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Katrina Victoria Vaananen, M.A. Graduate Program in Greek and Latin The Ohio State University 2017 Dissertation Committee: Fritz Graf, Advisor Julia Nelson-Hawkins Frank Coulson Copyrighted by Katrina Victoria Vaananen 2017 Abstract The main aim of this dissertation is to study Fracastoro’s allusive technique: particularly his reception of classical authors. I will identify and assess the evidence for Fracastoro’s reception of these classical authors through a close reading of the Morbus Gallicus and its classical intertexts, and by an examination of that poetry identify and uncover the motifs, themes, diction, and poetic agendas that Fracastoro recognized, engaged, and leveraged – in effect, how he read his predecessors as he produced his own work. The manner in which Fracastoro uses his classical antecedents reveals a greater complexity in Fracastoro’s allusive technique than previous scholars have noticed. This project, at its core, is about coming to a better and more complete understanding of Fracastoro as a poet. Most previous examinations of Fracastoro’s work (and engagement with his antecedents) tend to create a dichotomy between Fracastoro’s works as a man of science and as a man of letters, often implying the primacy of his role as a scientist. In this project, I seek to draw attention to his work – and talent – as a poet. To that end, my discussion starts with Fracastoro’s reception of the authors where a far more reasonable premise would be that Fracastoro was looking at them with a purely poetic eye; the first half of the project deals with the ties to Vergil, Ovid, and Catullus.
