INFORMING A DISTRACTED AUDIENCE: NEWS NARRATIVES IN BREAKFAST TELEVISION Emma Copeman Submitted in fulfilment of the degree of Bachelor of Arts (MECO), Honours Department of Media and Communications October, 2007 i Abstract This thesis takes its lead from Baym‟s (2004) suggestion that incorporation of entertainment techniques into television news undermines its authority and credibility. To explore this question, textual analysis was conducted on the news bulletins of Australian breakfast television programs Sunrise and Today with regard to narrative features and the spread of traditional news conventions compared to entertainment techniques. This analysis was followed by a discussion of the dominant meanings produced by the news narratives of Sunrise and Today. The two programs employed similar narrative styles that largely adhered to traditional news conventions, positioning themselves as impartial and authoritative relayers of news. However, narratives of both programs also diverged from traditional news: both used entertainment conventions – with Today often abandoning the traditional Inverted Pyramid news story structure for new structures – and contained briefer stories, with references to the opinions and personal experiences of the item presenters. In some breakfast news items, the short and sometimes personal narrative structure diminished the construction of impartiality. While entertainment techniques represented a potential threat to the overall authority of the news, in this analysis, the threat was mitigated by the dominance of traditional news conventions and authority was retained. In summary, departures from traditional news narrative structure and delivery are evident in Australian breakfast television, and may partly decrease its news authority and impartiality. However, the ability of these programs to retain distracted breakfast audiences may depend on the brief, entertaining and sometimes personal nature of the news items. -

Archived BBC public responses to complaints 2016 BBC News, Coverage of the death of David Bowie, 12 January 2016 Complaint We received complaints from viewers and listeners who felt there was too much coverage of David Bowie’s death during BBC News programmes and bulletins. Response from BBC News David Bowie was by common consent one of our greatest pop stars who attracted a global following. He appealed across the ages and was one of the most influential musicians of his time. His death was both sudden and unexpected, his illness not revealed to anyone but a tight circle of friends. Our coverage tried to reflect his stature as a musician whose capacity for invention changed the shape of the industry, and the shock at his death around the world. Question Time, BBC One, 14 January 2016 Complaint We received complaints from viewers who felt the panel had a right wing bias. Response from Question Time Over the course of a series Question Time aims to achieve balance and hear from a range of voices. Each programme usually consists of one senior politician from both the Labour and Conservative party, as well as representatives from other political parties. The rest of the panel is made of political commentators, journalists, and other public figures that add a different perspective and represent a range of viewpoints across the series. We also aim to ensure that each episode has a divergent and broad range of views from the panel on the likely topics that our audience wish to raise. David Dimbleby moderates the debate to ensure panellists are given the opportunity to make their views known in a fair way. -

-iì~ '1,,J C.12 The Development of the UK Television News Industry 1982 - 1998 Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Alison Preston Deparent of Film and Media Studies University of Stirling July 1999 Abstract This thesis examines and assesses the development of the UK television news industry during the period 1982-1998. Its aim is to ascertain the degree to which a market for television news has developed, how such a market operates, and how it coexists with the 'public service' goals of news provision. A major purpose of the research is to investigate whether 'the market' and 'public service' requirements have to be the conceptual polarities they are commonly supposed to be in much media academic analysis of the television news genre. It has conducted such an analysis through an examination of the development strategies ofthe major news organisations of the BBC, ITN and Sky News, and an assessment of the changes that have taken place to the structure of the news industry as a whole. It places these developments within the determining contexts of Government economic policy and broadcasting regulation. The research method employed was primarily that of the in-depth interview with television news management, politicians and regulators: in other words, those instrumental in directing the strategic development within the television news industry. Its main findings are that there has indeed been a development of market activity within the television news industry, but that the amount of this activity has been limited by the particular economic attributes of the television news product. -

EDITORIAL PROCESSES – HOW BBC NEWS WORKS This document sets out the way that editorial decisions are taken in BBC News. At one level, the process is straightforward; the final decision about what to broadcast is taken by the editor of each area of output – whether it be a programme, a strand on a continuous news network or an online section. As the Neil Review of BBC Journalism reaffirmed in 2004, the editors are the “gatekeepers”. But BBC editors take the decisions they do in the context of the core BBC values that should drive all our journalism – truth and accuracy; serving the public interest; impartiality and diversity of opinion; independence; and accountability. They operate within an overarching framework of direction, guidance, policy and strategy which is set by senior management and approved and monitored by the BBC Trust (and formerly the Governors). Decision-making is a process of delegated editorial responsibility, with considerable checks and balances. It is like a big newspaper conglomerate with numerous titles – but publishing in different formats (radio, television and online) and catering for a range of different audiences. As of September 2006, BBC News employed just under 3,500 journalists producing 619 hours of news and weather per week on domestic radio and television, and 400 new stories a day on the website, with thousands of updates. BBC News also produces programming for BBC World and BBC World Service Radio which is commissioned by the Global Division. -

In these contexts, two or more parties compete for coverage in the news media. However, the main British party conferences present a different context, where one party’s activities form the (almost exclusive) focus of the news media's attention for a week, and that party’s leadership ‘negotiates* coverage in a direct one-to-one relationship. Conference weeks are the key points in the organizational year for each party (irrespective of their internal arrangements), and a critical period for communicating information about the party to voters at large, especially via television news coverage, which forms the focus of this study. -

Activity orientation in the talk of politicians, news journalists and audiences Paul Dickerson University College London Submitted for Doctorate of Philosophy 1999 1 Abstract The talk of politicians, news-joumalists and audiences has been relatively neglected in social psychology and media studies. Within these approaches talk has been ignored altogether, treated as a symptom of cognitive or ideological processes or employed simply as a tool to gain access to ‘inner’ ‘meaning making’ or ‘outer’ behaviour. This thesis explored a corpus of talk data from a discursive perspective in which the talk itself was the focus. It was argued that politicians and news-joumalists could in different ways be seen to orientate to the ‘truthfulness’ of what they say. Thus politicians’ were found to cite others to corroborate their claims, and new-joumalists through their exchange of utterances attended to the co-construction their ‘impartiality’ and ‘authoritativeness’. Politicians were also found to construct intent in terms of acting in ‘the national interest’ - this ‘repertoire’ could blame or exonerate self and others depending crucially on talk- context in which it was produced. Audiences’ talk about their identity and contrasts with others was also explored. Their talk was analysed not to uncover their ‘meaning- makings’ or behaviour but instead to discover the activity orientations of their talk and its sensitivity to the surrounding talk context. In this way the talk of politicians, news- joumalists and audiences was not seen as a symptom of some separate, ‘underlying’ phenomena of interest nor as a mere tool to access their ‘inner’ or ‘outer’ world - but rather it was the focus of study itself.
