Anderson Nathalie Kees Linda Kuk Lumina Albert Copyright by Suzan AlDoubi 2014 All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT ROAD TO LEADERSHIP: EXPERIENCES OF SAUDI WOMEN IN HIGHER EDUCATION The purpose of this narrative study was to explore the stories of Saudi women leaders about their experiences in accessing leadership positions in higher education. In addition, this study sought to offer Saudi women leaders the opportunity to talk about their social roles and gender stereotypes they were expected to uphold in their efforts to access and perform their leadership positions in higher education. The two guiding research questions were: (1) what were the stories of Saudi women leaders about their experiences in accessing leadership positions in higher education? and, (2) what social roles and gender stereotypes were these women leaders expected to uphold in the workplace? The sampling consisted of six Saudi women leaders in higher education. Thematic analysis was used as a mean of analyzing the data. The findings of this study indicated that Saudi women leaders accessed leadership positions in higher education after they attained their doctoral degree. For the social roles and gender stereotypes women leaders encountered in the workplace when interacting with men, the emerged themes were men’s role, women leader’s double bind, and women leaders’ feminine characteristics. The result of interacting with women revealed, women leaders being enemies of other women, supportive, or situational actions. -

Page 92 Journalism Education Volume 1 number 1 Newsreaders as eye candy: the hidden agenda of public service broadcasting Claire Wolfe and Dr. Barbara Mitra Worcester University Abstract: Television news adds to the wider discourses that permeate society about feminine beauty. Women still face much greater pressure than men regarding their physical appearance and body image. How they look mat- ters, especially with regards to newsreaders and broad- casters. We investigated the opinions of journalists and audiences about the appearance of women newsreaders and found that physical appearance plays a significant role for female presenters. Also, our research suggests that where women are glamorised they are belittled in terms of intelligence and their abilities. The audience for television news are aware of the narrow versions of beau- ty that are being presented and note that they would like to see more diverse representations of women reading the news. Keywords: newsreaders, gender, sexualisation, age, representation, beauty, television news, discourse. Aims This study investigates the physical appearance of male and female newsreaders in Eng- land with reference to age, credibility and industry response. We argue that television news implicitly promotes stereotypical physical attractiveness, particularly for women. Recent research demonstrates that television is still the main source of news for many older people (Clausen, 2004 cited in Weibel, Wissmath and Groner, 2008, p.466) and hence forms part of the discourses that permeate society (Giles, 2009, p.318). Women looking good Much has been written about the preoccupation with image for women in the media (see Downs and Har- rison, 1985; Demarest and Allen, 2005; Wykes and Gunter, 2005) and how these reinforce dominant dis- courses of beauty as well as patriarchal norms. -

GCSE Media: TV News and News Websites Topic: Section A Television News Section B News Websites Section A-Thinking about the Media-Investigating Candidates will need to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the set topic in relation to the main areas from the specification framework. The topic of News for the examination will be studied in relation to the convergent nature of the media. This resource will explore the topic of News in relation to the following areas: • Genre: codes and conventions of television news, similarity and difference across different news programmes, an exploration of typical news programme formats and online news platforms linked to the relationship with audience needs. • Narrative: the role of selection and construction in creating narratives, narrative structures, the ways in which media language constructs points of view and conveys particular messages and values. • Representations: how the media presents people and the way events and issues are represented in the news from a national, regional and local perspective. • Media organisations: sustaining and extending markets, regulation, marketing, promoting and branding, cross-media platform presence, new technologies and distribution. • Audience and users: targeting audiences, audience/user engagement, audience/user response and interpretation, uses and pleasures. What is news? • Mind map your initial ideas. What is your understanding of the word ‘news’? • Compare your definition with a partner. Have you come up with a similar point of view? • Share your ideas with the whole class. • Now write a definition which includes points that have been discussed. Some points that might emerge: something not previously known, a factual report, something important, an event that has happened recently… Dictionary definition: Newly received or noteworthy information, especially about recent events. -
