Proceeding of the 7th Symposium on Flora of Southeastern Serbia and Neighbouring Regions, Dimitrovgrad, 2002. Based on recent field work, an inventory of 412 plant taxa (408 species and 4 subspecies) from the Djendema Reserve (Central Balkan National Park - Bulgaria), is presented. Taxonomic diversity and structure, Raunkiaer’s life-forms distribution and floristic elements in the investigated area are analysed. Taxa with conservation value are determined. Genus Primula L. (Primulaceae) is represented in Bulgaria by 8 species. The study is an observation of the whole recent collection of the genus, stored in the Herbarium of Agricultural University – Plovdiv (SOA). The collection consists of 352 herbarium sheets (185 of them from Bulgarian localities), representing 36 species (8 from Bulgaria). The chorological information from the literature and from the herbarium specimens is databased and mapped. Inspite of the relatively low representativeness, the Primula collection of SOA is an important resource for the taxonomical and chorological investigations in this group. A particular attention is given to the characteristics of the conservational importance of these plants at national and international level. Two hundred and one of these species belonging to 71 genera and 36 families were considered to have some conservational status in Bulgaria and Europe. Many of them are endemics for Bulgaria and/or Balkan Peninsula and are protected by the national Bulgarian legislation or by interna- tional conventions ratified by Bulgaria. However, the identities of the component genes remain unknown. Here, we identify the Primula CYP734A50 gene, encoding a putative brassinosteroid-degrading enzyme, as the G locus that determines the style-length dimorphism. CYP734A50 is only present on the short-styled S-morph haplotype, it is specifically expressed in S-morph styles, and its loss or inactivation leads to long styles.
