tion Note lica Art Works pp A Raman RA02 Archaeometric analysis of ancient pottery Philippe Colomban, LADIR UMR 70 75 CNRS & UPMC, Thiais, France Leading experts generally base their certification of ancient artefacts on stylistic analysis and on personal sensory perceptions. However, greater objectivity is mandatory for identification and dating purposes. Different manufacturing technologies often result in products of very similar external appearance (from the visual and sensory points of view), but which differ completely in their micro/nanostructure. A lot of information about the production process remains written in the sample and non-destructive Raman analysis of the micro-structure (for ceramics) and nano-structure (for glasses and enamels) offers a way to retrieve the information, which assists in the identification and sometimes dating of ancient artifacts (Figure 1). Direct relationships between the silica content, or more precisely the ratio between the glass-former (chiefly Si and Al-oxides) and the flux content (Na, K, Ca, Pb oxides) and the properties of glassy silicates have been established for a long time (Seeger’s rules). Because strong covalent bonded structures have Raman signatures orders of magnitude larger than those of ionic ones, the Raman spectrum of a silicate consists, as a first approximation, solely out of the signature of the Si-O network (Si-O stretching, bending and librational/collective modes). Chapter 3 Sintering and Microstructure of Ceramics 3.1. Sintering and microstructure of ceramics We saw in Chapter 1 that sintering is at the heart of ceramic processes. However, as sintering takes place only in the last of the three main stages of the process (powders o forming o heat treatments), one might be surprised to see that the place devoted to it in written works is much greater than that devoted to powder preparation and forming stages. This is perhaps because sintering involves scientific considerations more directly, whereas the other two stages often stress more technical observations M in the best possible meaning of the term, but with manufacturing secrets and industrial property aspects that are not compatible with the dissemination of knowledge. However, there is more: being the last of the three stages M even though it may be followed by various finishing treatments (rectification, decoration, deposit of surfacing coatings, etc.) M sintering often reveals defects caused during the preceding stages, which are generally optimized with respect to sintering, which perfects them M for example, the granularity of the powders directly impacts on the densification and grain growth, so therefore the success of the powder treatment is validated by the performances of the sintered part. Sintering allows the consolidation M the non-cohesive granular medium becomes a cohesive material M whilst organizing the microstructure (size and shape of the grains, rate and nature of the porosity, etc.). The Museums users are not anymore scholars and experts only; many of them are non-specialists, wishful for evocative emotions and multi-disciplinary experiences. These new requirements, together with the need to preserve the art collections from the possible dangers (the time-effects, the natural disasters as much as human attacks), lead the new technology to play a crucial role in the design of the exhibitions layout. The design of a new art exhibition requires the involvement of many different technical and artistic knowledges. This research is focused on the design of the majolica collection exhibited at Museum of Bargello of Florence, which has been founded in 1865 as first National Museum in Italy. The Museum presents several art collections of high value, very different from each other. Even the displays exhibited at the Museum present a large variety, due to the different properties of the collections to exhibit and to the age of the staging design. Since the Museum foundation to nowadays, indeed, several displays have been followed one another, and some of them have become part of its asset. The current curators, therefore, have to deal with the double need i) to renew the exhibition, in order to guarantee the high profile of the Museum, and to optimize the expressive potentiality of each art good, and ii) to protect the art collections, providing to each item the due safety. -

Hannah Wirta Kinney TRANSCRIBING MATERIAL VALUES IN DOCCIA’S PORCELAIN MEDICI VENUS* Thomas Salmon’s 1757 Lo stato presente di tutti i paesi e popoli del mondo described the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and city of Florence through the works of admired artists. Im- aginatively walking the city through Salmon’s words, the reader discovers Florence’s ar- tistic legacy in every corner. This guide, like so many of the period, reinforced the illus- trious history the Medici family had written about themselves through their investment in the artistic culture of the city to which so many Grand Tourists made their pilgrim- age. The pinnacle of the Florentine experience was viewing the wonders of the famous grand-ducal galleries, which Salmon said were “perhaps unique”.1 Salmon catalogued room by room the “great works of every Art” collected through the “immense expense” of the “Heroes of the Medici House”.2 The last room, the Tribuna, contained “the best qualities of nature and art, the marvels of painting and sculpture”. Held in highest re- gard was “the most beautiful Statue of Venus, commonly called the Venere de’ Medici, which in past centuries was the wonder of Rome, and now one could say the marvel of this city” (fig. 1). Her perfection, Salmon emphasized, was attested to by “the many cop- ies that one finds scattered throughout the world”.3 * This article evolved out of my Masters’ thesis submitted at the Bard Graduate Center in May 2014. Marco Verità* SECRETS AND INNOVATIONS OF VENETIAN GLASS BETWEEN THE 15TH AND THE 17TH CENTURIES: RAW MATERIALS, GLASS MELTING AND ARTEFACTS From the fifteenth to the end of the seventeenth century,V enice has been the world leader in glassmaking. Murano’s primacy was due to the extraordinary quality of its glass (homogeneity, transparency, palette of colours, etc.), the style of Venetian glassware, the skill of glassmasters and the wide range of products. This supremacy could be reached and maintained thanks to the fact that glassmaking in Venice has always been a dynamic craft. Since its beginnings it underwent radical changes and incorporated many innovations along the centuries. The oldest extant document attesting a production of glassware in Venice is a manuscript dating to 982 A.D.; nevertheless archaeological evidence of glassworking since the 7-8th centuries was found in the island of Torcello in the Venetian lagoon. Since the origins the Venetian glass was (and is still today) of the soda-lime-silica type, that is mainly composed of sodium (Na2O), 1 calcium (CaO) and silicon (SiO2) oxides . The reluctance ofV enetian glassmakers to change the composition of their glass is rather complex to explain. THE FIGURE REVISITED: EARLY DOCCIA PORCELAIN SCULPTURE IN DETROIT AND ITS DEVELOPMENT IN 18TH-CENTURY ITALY Alan Phipps Darr Curator of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts The Detroit Institute of Arts In 1990 the Detroit Institute of Arts acquired an important collection of rare, experi mental early Doccia porcelain sculpture produced in Florence between c.1742 and 1757.' This collection, formed earlier this century by a collector who wishes to remain anonymous, consists of 23 figures and reliefs, several of which are masterpieces. This paper is intended to explain the significance of this collec tion, now the largest selection of Florentine baroque porcelain sculptures outside Italy, to present individual pieces of impressive quality and scale, and to review briefly the early history of the Doccia factory7 production, which the Florentine historian Marchese Leonardo Ginori Lisci described as ‘the fifteen glorious years’.2 The early works will be presented in the context of Florentine baroque art and the development of European porcelain with specific discussions of the early production of the Doccia factory and inter-relationships between sculptors and the factory.
