Harvard owes its very name to the library that was left in 1638 by John Harvard to the newly created College. For 370 years, the College and the University that grew around it have had libraries at their heart. While the University sprouted new buildings, departments, and schools, the library grew into a collection of collections, adding new services and locations until its tendrils stretched as far from Cambridge as Washington, DC and Florence, Italy. -

However, greater objectivity is mandatory for identification and dating purposes. Different manufacturing technologies often result in products of very similar external appearance (from the visual and sensory points of view), but which differ completely in their micro/nanostructure. A lot of information about the production process remains written in the sample and non-destructive Raman analysis of the micro-structure (for ceramics) and nano-structure (for glasses and enamels) offers a way to retrieve the information, which assists in the identification and sometimes dating of ancient artifacts (Figure 1). Direct relationships between the silica content, or more precisely the ratio between the glass-former (chiefly Si and Al-oxides) and the flux content (Na, K, Ca, Pb oxides) and the properties of glassy silicates have been established for a long time (Seeger’s rules). Because strong covalent bonded structures have Raman signatures orders of magnitude larger than those of ionic ones, the Raman spectrum of a silicate consists, as a first approximation, solely out of the signature of the Si-O network (Si-O stretching, bending and librational/collective modes). The majolica collection of the Museum of Bargello A different approach to the Museum exhibition Leonardo ZAFFI, University of Florence, Department of Architecture, Italy Stefania VITI, University of Florence, Department of Architecture, Italy Keywords: Museum of Bargello, Majolica collection, design of Museums staging, resilience of Museums Introduction Nowadays the art exhibitions cannot just show the art collections, but they need to emotionally involve the visitors. The Museums users are not anymore scholars and experts only; many of them are non-specialists, wishful for evocative emotions and multi-disciplinary experiences. These new requirements, together with the need to preserve the art collections from the possible dangers (the time-effects, the natural disasters as much as human attacks), lead the new technology to play a crucial role in the design of the exhibitions layout. The design of a new art exhibition requires the involvement of many different technical and artistic knowledges. This research is focused on the design of the majolica collection exhibited at Museum of Bargello of Florence, which has been founded in 1865 as first National Museum in Italy. The Museum presents several art collections of high value, very different from each other. Even the displays exhibited at the Museum present a large variety, due to the different properties of the collections to exhibit and to the age of the staging design. Since the Museum foundation to nowadays, indeed, several displays have been followed one another, and some of them have become part of its asset. The current curators, therefore, have to deal with the double need i) to renew the exhibition, in order to guarantee the high profile of the Museum, and to optimize the expressive potentiality of each art good, and ii) to protect the art collections, providing to each item the due safety. -

Hannah Wirta Kinney TRANSCRIBING MATERIAL VALUES IN DOCCIA’S PORCELAIN MEDICI VENUS* Thomas Salmon’s 1757 Lo stato presente di tutti i paesi e popoli del mondo described the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and city of Florence through the works of admired artists. Im- aginatively walking the city through Salmon’s words, the reader discovers Florence’s ar- tistic legacy in every corner. This guide, like so many of the period, reinforced the illus- trious history the Medici family had written about themselves through their investment in the artistic culture of the city to which so many Grand Tourists made their pilgrim- age. The pinnacle of the Florentine experience was viewing the wonders of the famous grand-ducal galleries, which Salmon said were “perhaps unique”.1 Salmon catalogued room by room the “great works of every Art” collected through the “immense expense” of the “Heroes of the Medici House”.2 The last room, the Tribuna, contained “the best qualities of nature and art, the marvels of painting and sculpture”. Held in highest re- gard was “the most beautiful Statue of Venus, commonly called the Venere de’ Medici, which in past centuries was the wonder of Rome, and now one could say the marvel of this city” (fig. 1). Her perfection, Salmon emphasized, was attested to by “the many cop- ies that one finds scattered throughout the world”.3 * This article evolved out of my Masters’ thesis submitted at the Bard Graduate Center in May 2014. Attempting to cover all twelve months would be hopeless. Instead, a couple of happenings in May exemplify the trajectory on which Dumbarton Oaks is hurtling forward and upward. The place was founded for advanced research. No one who respects strong and solid tradi- tions would wrench it from the scholarship enshrined in its library, archives, and research collections; at the same time, it was designed to welcome a larger public. These two events give tribute to this broader engagement. To serve the greater good, Dumbarton Oaks now cooperates vigorously with local schools. It is electrifying to watch postdoc- toral and postgraduate fellows help students enjoy and learn from our gardens and museum collections. On May 16, we hosted a gath- ering with delegates from the DC Collaborative. -

The Oaks News A monthly bulletin from Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection Now on View In the Museum: Still Life and Landscape Gudrun Bühl This exhibition of paintings and furniture juxtaposes two distinct yet related artistic genres. In a still life, the artist depicts the world up-close and often in detail; in a landscape, the world is viewed from afar. Despite these differences, the two art forms share common ground—they both represent the world around us. The artworks in Still Life & Landscape, all from the Dumbarton Oaks historic House Collection, range in date from the early sixteenth to the early twentieth centuries. Artists in the exhibition include Claude Lorrain, Jan van Huysum, David Roentgen, Odilon Redon, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Still Life & Landscape is featured in the Special Exhibition Hallway, and will be up through August 12, 2012. In the Library: Mirabilia: Remarkable Plants from the Dumbarton Oaks Rare Book Collection Sarah Burke Featured item Dragon Fruit Primera y segunda y tercera partes de la historia medicinal… Nicolas Monardes 1574 In his botanical study of the New World, Nicolas Monardes—a Spanish physician based in Seville—documents some of the extraordinary specimens being brought to Europe by explorers and travelers. In this woodcut, an open seedpod reveals a small dragon. Before exploration of the New World, there was already a European market for “dragon’s blood” derived from Asian plants such as Pterocarpus draco. Perhaps Monardes’ “El Dragon” is an imaginative depiction of a New World plant that produced a red juice or resin. Or is this dragon hinting at something more? Jorge Cañizares-Esguerra, in Puritan Conquistadors: Iberianizing the Atlantic, 1550–1700 (2006), explains the long-held belief that dragons inhabited the New World.
