You chat with family and friends, you attend to your correspondence, you consult menus and shopping lists, you observe road signs (LOOK LEFT), and so on. Then you enter your study, where language exists in quite another form – as the stuff of patterned artifice. Playing Nabokov: Performances by Himself and Others Abstract In 1918, in the Crimea, the adolescent Vladimir Nabokov devised a new pastime: "parodizing a biographic approach" by narrating his own actions aloud. In this self-conscious "game," he orchestrated changes in grammatical person, gender, and tense in order to transform his present experiences into a third-person past, as remembered by a female friend in an imaginary future. Staging his own biography in this fashion allowed Nabokov to resolve the inherent conflict between his life and his art. Indeed, he went on to play the game of narrating his own biography throughout his memoir, Speak, Memory: An Autobiography Revisited, and in his fiction. Fifty earsy after Nabokov invented this game, he met his first eal-lifr e biographer, Andrew Field, who resisted playing it by Nabokov's rules. -
Eichmann, Empathy, and Lolita
Leland de la Durantaye EICHMANN, EMPATHY, AND LOLITA I ometime in late 1960 or early 1961 Adolf Eichmann, jailed and Sawaiting trial in Jerusalem, was given by his guard a copy of Vladimir Nabokov’s recently published Lolita, as Hannah Arendt puts it, “for relax- ation.” After two days Eichmann returned it, visibly indignant: “Quite an unwholesome book”—Das ist aber ein sehr unerfreuliches Buch—he told his guard.1 Though we are not privy to, and nor does Arendt speculate upon this officer’s intentions, it is difficult to imagine that they were limited to procuring Eichmann a little “relaxation.” The tale of a homi- cidal madman writing under observation and awaiting a trial that will consign him either to death or prolonged imprisonment—which fate spares him by felling him with a heart attack—could hardly have been very relaxing for someone at that moment writing his own memoirs and himself awaiting a trial with similar stakes. We might imagine other intentions on the part of Eichmann’s guard. Could the gesture have been ironic? Or was it motivated by a dark curios- ity—something of the order of an experiment? The sulphurous halo of Nabokov’s book was still burning brightly in the popular consciousness of 1960.2 Might Eichmann’s guard have seen Lolita as a sort of litmus test for radical evil, and wanted to see whether the real-life villain—he who impassively organized the transport towards certain death of countless innocents—would coldly, even gleefully, approve the various and vile machinations of Nabokov’s creation? This is all only speculation. -

Despair by Vladimir Nabokov: the Transcendental Nature of the Narrative and Power of a Symbolic Language Nina Scherbak, St. Petersburg State University Abstract The article aims at providing critical analysis of reviews related to the study of the novel Despair by V. Nabokov. It is stated in this article that the idea of “the murder of the double” doesn’t correlate with concrete action, psychological perversion, or the irony of the writer towards Dostoevsky. “The murder of a double” is in reality a metaphor for a complex and non-linear process of the creation of literary work. The encounter with a double could be considered a manifestation of an event related to mystical experience. The encounter of Hermann and Felix (and a further elimination of this encounter) correlates with an attempt to actualize in the text the extraordinary Different allusions, aesthetics and means allow to generate numerous extra meanings in the text which are related to the historical and cultural context of the time. An important research result is the study of a symbolic language developed by Nabokov which is manifested by lexical density, use of numerous homogeneous and heterogeneous attributes, multilingualism, precise attention to the sounds, eco-elements, and mirror- like elements, etc. This language is the basis of Nabokov’s art almost in a Heideggerian way, allowing the reader to generate a number of meanings, simultaneously being absorbed, in the process of reading and interpretation. Nabokov's Amphiphorical Gestures Abstract In addition to using two primary kinds of metaphors (those that clarify descriptions, and those that develop into leitmotifs), Nabokov's fiction demonstrates a third kind that is characterized by extended analogies, baroque, seemingly uncontrolled imagery and rhetoric, and, most importantly, fundamental ambiguity. Although this inherent ambiguity is developed throughout the comparison, it is never resolved. Because of this distinguishing characteristic, I have named such metaphors "amphiphors," after one of Nabokov's own neologisms. Nabokov's comments in Nikolai Gogol and Lectures on Russian Literature, as well as direct allusions to Gogol embedded in a few amphiphors, suggest that this device evolved directly from Gogol's absurd, overgrown images and Protean minor characterizations. Yet, whereas Gogol's "spontaneous generation" is careless, uncontrolled, and comical, Nabokov uses his amphiphors deliberately for ironic effect. -

The Holocaust is a central event in the history of not only Germany, Europe, or Jewry, but of the United States, the middle east, and the entire world during the 20th century. Debates in this country and in others frequently make reference, whether warranted or not, to the Holocaust and it is a common subject in popular histories. However, very few people understand the causes, the details, and the implications of the Holocaust. This course begins by exploring the roots of anti-Semitism in Germany and elsewhere, then focuses on the specific circumstances in Germany that allowed Nazism to rise to power, the way in which the Third Reich functioned, the timeline of events leading up to the Holocaust, and then continues on after 1945 by exploring the debates over the meaning and causes of the Holocaust, the attempts to understand the behavior of the perpetrators of the Holocaust, and even the attempts to both profit from Holocaust memory as well as to deny that the Holocaust actually took place. Course Goals: At the end of this course, you should be able to explain clearly the various roots of anti-Semitism that fed into the Holocaust, the structure of the Third Reich, especially the parts of the Nazi apparatus responsible for organizing and carrying out the killing of European Jews, the progressive stages of the Holocaust. -
