The study site is consisted of beach forest and riverine forest. The scanning method was used to observe the daily activity of the squirrel and a set of predetermine activity categories were used to record their activity. The study was indicated that the squirrel is active at 0600, 1100 and 1600 hours; and the highest average time spent was on displacement. Though the observation, ten families of the food plants were identified as the squirrels' food resources. The Plantain squirrel (Callosiurlls notatus) is essential as a seed disperser, weeds control and seed predator. A total of 100 traps were at two different trails to estimate the population of the squirrel. The population estimation at Trail 1 and Trail 2 is 36 and 26 individuals respectively. The overall population estimation at the Headquarters of Bako National Park is 56. The hypothesis using Chi-square test shows that there is no significant difference between both trails. The beach forest is the most favourite area to spend foraging but the riverine forest is the rno t suitable area for nesting ground. In general, the food resources are important as it could affect th e squirrel behaviour and the population distribution. Keyword: Plantain squirrel, Behaviour, Population ecology, Bako National Park ABSTRAK Satu kajian leJllang tingkah laku, pemakanan dan ekologi populasi tupai Pinang (Callosiurus notatus). telah dijalankan di sekitar ibu pejabat Taman Negara Bako, dari 24hb November sampai 3hb Desember. Kawasan kajian ini terdiri daripada hutan pantai dan hutan paya. Pemerhatian secara rawak telah digunakan untuk memerhatikan aktiviti harian tupai dan satu set kategori aktiviti telah digunakan untuk merekodkan aktiviti berkenaan. Kajian ini menunjukkan tupai aktif pada pukul 0600, llOD dan 1600; dan purata masa pergerakan adalah paling tinggi. Melalui pemerhatian, sepuluh famili tumbuha1l telah dikenalpasti sebagai sumber makanan tupai. Tupai Pinang (Callosiurus notatus) adalah penting sebagai penyebar biji benih, pengawal rumput-rumpai dan pemakan biji benih. Sebanyak 100 perangkap telah dipasang di sekitar dua trek untuk menjangka populasi tupai. Populasi jangkaan di Trek 1 dan Trek 2 adalah masing-masing 36 dan 26 individu. Secara lceseluruhannya, populasi jangkaan di [bu pejabat Taman Negara Bako ialah 56 individu. Hipotesis menggunakan ujian Chi-square telah menunjukkan tiada perbezaan antara dua trek. Hutan pantai merupakan tempat yang paling digemari oleh tupai untuk mencari makanan, manakala hutan paya Uriah kawasan yang sesuai untuk membina sarang. Secara umumnya, asas pemakanan adalah penting untukmenjelaskan tingkah laku tupai dan taburan populasinya. Kata kunci: Plantain squirrel, Tingkah laku, Populasi ekologi, Taman Negara Bako 1 1.0 INTRODUCTION Plantain squirrel (Callosciurus notatus) of order Rodentia, the "gnawing" mammals, contains over forty percent of all species in class Mammalia (Debalse and Martin, 1974; Payne et al., 1985). Rodentia consist of 30 living families, 418 genera and approximateJy 1750 species (Vaughan, 1965). Usually rodents, which are tree squirrels, ground squirrels, flying squirrels, rats, mice and porcupines (Wong, 1996) can be acknowledged as a successful order because of their ability to adapt to the changes in their habitat condition (Steven, 1968). Besides, rodents share a series of distinctive cranial features; the upper and lower jaws each bear a pair of incisor that allows them to exploit a broad spectrum of foods (Vaughan, 1965). Thus, they can live almost everywhere on land and co-exist with the presence of human or in urban areas (Steven, 1968). Many species of rodents are of economic importance as food for humans, and some rodents' fur is important in the garment industry. The rodents namely muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus), beaver (Castor canadensis) and Chilla (Chinchilla lanigera) are bred in captivity throughout the world to contribute as furbearers.

We recorded a fabulous 163 species including a good number of near-endemics and Bali’s only endemic (and one of the world’s rarest birds to boot), the magnificent Bali Myna! On our first afternoon we all met up at our comfortable ecolodge in the wooded outskirts of Denpasar. Some participants had just arrived in Bali from their international flights and the rest of us had recently flown in from Manado, after having completed a fabulous Sulawesi & Halmahera tour. Everyone had arrived in good time and after enjoying a delicious lunch we ventured out to the nearby Serangan Island to Oriental Plovers by David Hoddinott enjoy some bonus birding. The mudflats, mangroves and surrounding grassland here rewarded us with great sightings in the good, late afternoon light. Some of the highlights included a good number of Sunda Teal, Little Pied and Little Black Cormorants, Australian Pelican – a nice surprise, sneaky Ruddy-breasted Crake, a plethora of waders including splendid Beach Stone- curlew and Javan and the very sought-after Oriental Plover, smashing Little Tern in full breeding plumage, Island Collared Dove, Savanna Nightjar, Cave Swiftlet hawking insects over the ponds, and cracking Cerulean Kingfisher.

A journey to a land where lizards fly, squirrels are the size of mice, civets look like otters and deer are no bigger than small annoying poodles...Indonesia! Where did this all begin...? In late June I was thinking of heading to Asia for a break. After yet another Tasmanian winter I wanted to sweat, get soaked in a tropical rain shower, get hammered by mosquitoes...I wanted to eat food with my hands (and not get stared at), wear sandals, drink cheap beer...and of course experience an amazing diversity of life. While researching some options I contacted my former employer and good friend Adam Riley from Rockjumper Birding Tours/Indri and he suggested I touch base with a client that I had arranged trips for before. The client (and now friend!) in question, Dave Redfield, has seen an aPD]LQJYDULHW\RIWKHZRUOG¶VPDPPDO species but, at that time, had yet to visit Indonesia. So, armed with a target list and a 22 day budget, I sat down and began researching and designing a tour in search of a select suit of mammal species for Dave. Time, terrain, concentration of species and cost were considered. We settled on a few days in mammal hotspots on Java, Sumatra, Borneo, Sulawesi and finally Bali, in that order. %DOLZDVDOVRFKRVHQDVDJRRGSODFHWRZLQGGRZQDIWHUµURXJKLQJLW¶ though the rest of Indonesia. It is also worth mentioning that Dave, realising that seeing all the ZRUOG¶Vmammals in the wild is an impossible target, does count mammals seen in captivity; the target list of species was thus not what one might have expected (for example, a Red Spiny Mouse was a priority but Babirusa was not).

    FLORA AND FAUNA STUDY FOR THE PROPOSED LOGGING AND OIL PALM PLANTATION AT PT 11675 (854.31 HECTARES) IN MUKIM KERATONG DISTRICT OF ROMPIN, PAHANG DARUL MAKMUR SEPTEMBER 2019 Prepared by Assoc Prof Datuk Dr Azrae Bin Haji Idris Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur Flora and Fauna Study for the Proposed Logging and Oil Palm Plantation at PT 11675 (854.31 Hectares) in Mukim Keratong District of Rompin, Pahang Darul Makmur EXISTING CONDITION Introduction – Juxtaposition The Proposed Project Site is an area of 854.31 ha (2111.0 acres) located within Mukim Keratong, Daerah Rompin, Pahang. It lies approximately from 2°38’5” N to 2040’0” N latitude to 103°3’15” E to 103°5’32” E longitude. The Felda Selancar complexes lie on its western sides with Felda Selancar 4 and 9 at its border (Fig J1). The Endau Rompin National Park is located about 20 - 25 km in the southeast direction. The area is accessible through Lebuhraya 12 Segamat - Kuantan and Lebuhraya Tun Razak from Segamat and into Road 2490 until it reaches the Selancar Felda complexes (Selancar 2, 4, 5 and 9 on the left and Selancar 3 on the right). From Selancar 9, take off road towards the Proposed Project Site, initially using earth track of Felda Selancar 9 palm oil plantation before joining the numerous tracks within the site (Fig J2a and J2b). Large tracts of open-up lands mainly for agriculture lie in the northern direction drained by the Jekatih River. Sungai Pukin flows in the southerly direction but did not reside within the Proposed Project Site.

    Indonesia September 2018: East Java, Sulawesi, Bali, Komodo Island Group and Sumatra The local holiday season allowed me to take almost a month off in September without using up too many vacation days.. I really have been fantasizing about the Sunda islands again. But since AA Borneo was fully booked almost a year in advance (!) I decided to organize a trip there for 2019 (more on that in a separate post), and join my family to Indonesia in 2018. We did both the touristy stuff (Prambanan, Borobodour, Mt. Bromo, Komodo Island’s pink beaches etc.) and concentrated on mammal watching on Sulawesi (1 day Tangkoko – 3 of us; 3 days Nantu – only me) and Sumatra by myself, for a week at the end of the trip, while my mom and sister continued to Singapore. I can’t say I got particularly lucky, but I did see some cool things including my first ever tarsier and cuscus, manta ray, komodo dragon and lots of birds. Briefly about Java, Bali and Komodo: So on Java we started out in Jogjakarta and traveled eastwards. I had no time, unfortunately, to squeeze in Gunung Gede. We visited Mt. Merapi, Prambanan, Borobudour, and Candi Gedong Songo. After a night in Semarang we flew to Surabaya where we continued to Mt. Bromo for a night and then the city of Surabaya for another night before continuing to Sulawesi. Not having time for Gn. Gede, I really only thought I had a good chance at two species I wanted to see on Java, which occur throughout it and Bali: Javan Lutung (Ebony Langur) and Javan Ferret Badger.

With reports from Danum Valley of numerous mammals, the amazing plant life, and more recently spotlighting trips for mammals at Deramakot, what was not to love? Perhaps the tales of deforestation, oil palm plantations and poaching. But it turned out that Sabah at least is doing a lot for conservation and control of logging, which was really good to see. Our trip was put together by Adventure Alternative Borneo. Nov 2 Joanna and I arrived in the early hours and stayed at Hotel 63 in Kota Kinabalu (KK). We took a walk later in the day up Signal Hill, where we saw our first two mammals, Prevost’s and Plantain Squirrels. Later in the afternoon, other participants arrived and we took a taxi to the KK Bird sanctuary. Saw a few egrets, Glossy Starlings and monitor lizards, a black skink (not identified) and some common birds. We all went out to Seremban Seafood Restaurant near the docks which proved to be very nice. It became our go-to place in KK. Nov 3 We picked up a rental van (delivered to hotel). I had been deemed too old to drive in KK, so Rayelene was behind the wheel.

The wider surrounding area is known to contain the largest remaining contiguous lowland forest‐block on Borneo, which provides a refuge for its high biodiversity as well as threatened endemic species such as the Bornean Orang-utan. The research compared two sites, one of more pristine and untouched peat-swamp forest and the other more influenced by edge effects, for density and richness of squirrel species. The differences in vegetation structure were investigated using canopy cover and diameter at breast height data and the squirrel density surveys used line-transect (later analysed using the DISTANCE software). The results confirmed the hypothesized differences between the two sites, with a lower encounter rate and density observed on the outer transects (1.7 sq/km; 0.74) and higher on the inner transects (2.6 sq/ km; 0.84). Moreover the results highlighted squirrel preferences for higher and interconnected canopy cover and an increased density of mature fruiting trees. An analysis of the literature context revealed a lack of research in this area particularly in comparison with other flagship species in Borneo.
