2 of the working draft Environmental Statement (ES) for Phase 2b of High Speed Two (HS2). The purpose of the working draft ES is to provide the public and other stakeholders with an opportunity to review and comment on preliminary environmental information for Phase 2b of HS2, which is based on a stage in the ongoing design development and environmental assessment process. Nothing included at this stage is intended to limit the form of the final scheme that will be presented in the hybrid Bill and formal ES in light of further scheme development and the ongoing discussions with stakeholders such as Transport for the North and Midlands Connect. Consultation on the working draft ES is being undertaken to help inform the ongoing design and environmental assessment in advance of producing a statutory formal ES.

    Advisory Visit River Bollin, Styal Country Park, Cheshire February 2010 1.0 Introduction This report is the output of a site visit undertaken by Tim Jacklin of the Wild Trout Trust to the River Bollin, Cheshire on 19th February 2010. Comments in this report are based on observations on the day of the site visit and discussions with Kevin Nash (Fisheries Technical Specialist) and Andy Eaves (Fisheries Technical Officer) of the Environment Agency (EA), North West Region (South Area). Normal convention is applied throughout the report with respect to bank identification, i.e. the banks are designated left hand bank (LHB) or right hand bank (RHB) whilst looking downstream. 2.0 Catchment / Fishery Overview The River Bollin is 49 km long and rises in the edge of Macclesfield Forest, flowing west to join the River Mersey (Manchester Ship Canal) near Lymm. The River Dean is the major tributary of the Bollin, and the catchment area totals 273 km2. The section of river visited flows through Styal Country Park, downstream of Quarry Bank Mill, and is owned by the National Trust. A previous Wild Trout Trust visit was carried out further downstream at the National Trust property at Dunham Massey. The Bollin falls within the remit of the Mersey Life Project which aims to carry out a phased programme of river restoration, initially focussing on the non-tidal section of the River Mersey, the River Bollin and River Goyt (http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/homeandleisure/wildlife/102362.aspx). The construction of fish passes on Heatley and Bollington Mill weirs in the lower Bollin catchment means it is now possible for migratory species (e.g.

Our response is in two parts: firstly responses to strategies identified in the document itself (“Gaps” in the language it uses) and then where we feel it does not address particular issues, we offer our alternatives ideas. railfuture have concerns about the forecasting period that is covered in this RUS. Whilst there are many references to a 20 or 30-year timescale, there is very little detail of what a future railway network might look like. We are disappointed that high speed rail appears to be the only long term vision for rail. We need a radical, expansionist vision for the “normal” railway. The railway should provide a much broader range of travel opportunities than at present through the reopening of old lines, the opening of new lines and the opening/re-opening of stations. The railway should meet the challenge of encouraging modal shift from the roads for both environmental (climate change and pollution reasons) and to ease congestions and make road traffic easier for essential journeys. What is needed are major and significant enhancements to the network to improve both its scope and capacity. What is going to happen by 2050? It is anticipated that the new franchises will cover a 15-year period yet this RUS is essentially concerned with CP4. Too much in this document is about 'nipping and tucking' services within the constraints of the current infrastructure. The importance of the Northern region must not be under estimated; the four Metropolitan counties combined have a similar population to Greater London.

The MCRUA committee, along with Friends Groups on the Line and the Community Rail Partnership members have received the details of the proposed Draft of the Mid Cheshire Line Timetables for the Revised “Two trains an hour” Service pattern from May 2018 for consultation, although Northern are saying they are a long way off being finalised.
