July 8, 2012 by Ricki Hollander New York Times: "All the News That's Fit to Conceal" The New York Times holds its own skewed view of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, according to which Israel is always to blame. It tries to impose this perspective on its readers by carefully choosing which facts to present and which to conceal. This selective approach distorts even otherwise informative articles such as Jerusalem bureau chief Jodi Rudoren's recent article about a meeting between Hebron Arabs and Jews ("Barefoot in a Tent, Neighbors Trading Vows of Mideast Peace," July 7, 2011). Below is the information that was chosen to be included in the article and that which was omitted. Information included in the article Hebron, home to about 150,000 Palestinians and 900 Jews, has been practically the opposite of peaceful since Israel began occupying the West Bank in 1967. Its Cave of the Patriarchs was the site of a massacre in 1994 when Baruch Goldstein, a doctor from the large neighboring settlement of Kiryat Arba, killed 29 Muslims praying at the mosque. It was the only city excluded from the Oslo accords, and it was the subject of its own pact in 1997 separating the two communities and restricting their movements. Clashes continue, sometimes daily. The message conveyed: Jewish settlers are violent interlopers in Hebron: It is only since Israel "began occupying" Hebron after 1967 that clashes and violence began. This is evidenced by the violent massacre in 1994 of peaceful Arabs by a Jewish settler. And this sort of violence continues today. -

Stuhlman BHL, BA, MS LS, MHL In support of the Doctor of Hebrew Literature degree Jewish University of America Skokie, IL 2004 Page 1 Abstract Hebrew Names and Name Authority in Library Catalogs By Daniel D. Stuhlman, BA, BHL, MS LS, MHL Because of the differences in alphabets, entering Hebrew names and words in English works has always been a challenge. The Hebrew Bible (Tanakh) is the source for many names both in American, Jewish and European society. This work examines given names, starting with theophoric names in the Bible, then continues with other names from the Bible and contemporary sources. The list of theophoric names is comprehensive. The other names are chosen from library catalogs and the personal records of the author. Hebrew names present challenges because of the variety of pronunciations. The same name is transliterated differently for a writer in Yiddish and Hebrew, but Yiddish names are not covered in this document. Family names are included only as they relate to the study of given names. One chapter deals with why Jacob and Joseph start with “J.” Transliteration tables from many sources are included for comparison purposes. Because parents may give any name they desire, there can be no absolute rules for using Hebrew names in English (or Latin character) library catalogs. When the cataloger can not find the Latin letter version of a name that the author prefers, the cataloger uses the rules for systematic Romanization. Through the use of rules and the understanding of the history of orthography, a library research can find the materials needed. -

This comes as no surprise given the instability of the area, the political connections to the area, and the areas war-torn history of occupation. The conflict is an ages old one driven by religion on one side, the demand for peace on the other, and both sides maintaining a stake in the areas future. What is the Middle East problem? Is it really as complicated as so many make it out to be? Or is explaining the conflict simple, leaving only the matter of solving it a complicated affair? That is the question we are attempting to answer here, and to do so, we must look at its history. Evidence shows that the conflict is simple to explain, yet complicated to solve, and the proof lay in both sides of the historical coin. To start, what is the debate all about? How do we define it, and what should we call it? Well, to sum it up: One side – very simply put – wants the other side dead. It really is as easy as that to explain. Israel wants to be recognized as a sovereign Jewish state, and live in peace with its neighbors. However, all of its Arab neighbors want it destroyed and wiped off the face of the earth. -

American Victims Of The 1929 Hebron Massacre Dr. Yitzchok Levine Department of Mathematical Sciences Stevens Institute of Technology Hoboken, NJ 07030 [email protected] Introduction On August 27, 1929 The New York Times ran a front page article under the banner 8 AMERICANS LISTED IN 70 HEBRON DEAD Attack on Rabbinical College was Savage – 18 Killed in Banker’s House WOMEN AND CHILDREN SLAIN The headline was, of course, referring to the infamous and unprovoked Hebron Massacre that Arabs perpetrated on innocent Jews on August 24. Many of those killed on this Shabbos were students studying in the branch of the Slabodka Yeshiva then located in Hebron. In 1924 the Lithuanian government tried to draft into the army the majority of students studying in the Slabodka Yeshiva. This, of course, threatened the very existence of the Yeshiva. Since Rabbi Moshe Mordechai Epstein, the Rosh Yeshiva, was in America at that time, Rabbi Yechezkel Sarna tried to have the decree averted, but to no avail. After consulting Rabbi Nosson Tzvi Finkel, known as the Alter of Slabodka, it was decided to transfer the yeshiva to Eretz Yisroel. The Alter sent a telegram to Rabbi Epstein asking if he approved of the plan. Rabbi Epstein wired back his consent promising to make every effort to raise the funds necessary for the yeshiva's relocation. That same year the Alter sent Rabbi Sarna to Eretz Yisroel to choose a site for the yeshiva and to coordinate its establishment there. He was also charged with securing visas for the students. After evaluating various options, Rabbi Sarna chose the city of Hebron as the yeshiva's new home. -
