  • TA 4.1C Sample Article Analyzed PDF File
July 8, 2012 by Ricki Hollander New York Times: "All the News That's Fit to Conceal" The New York Times holds its own skewed view of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, according to which Israel is always to blame. It tries to impose this perspective on its readers by carefully choosing which facts to present and which to conceal. This selective approach distorts even otherwise informative articles such as Jerusalem bureau chief Jodi Rudoren's recent article about a meeting between Hebron Arabs and Jews ("Barefoot in a Tent, Neighbors Trading Vows of Mideast Peace," July 7, 2011). Below is the information that was chosen to be included in the article and that which was omitted. Information included in the article Hebron, home to about 150,000 Palestinians and 900 Jews, has been practically the opposite of peaceful since Israel began occupying the West Bank in 1967. Its Cave of the Patriarchs was the site of a massacre in 1994 when Baruch Goldstein, a doctor from the large neighboring settlement of Kiryat Arba, killed 29 Muslims praying at the mosque. It was the only city excluded from the Oslo accords, and it was the subject of its own pact in 1997 separating the two communities and restricting their movements. Clashes continue, sometimes daily. The message conveyed: Jewish settlers are violent interlopers in Hebron: It is only since Israel "began occupying" Hebron after 1967 that clashes and violence began. This is evidenced by the violent massacre in 1994 of peaceful Arabs by a Jewish settler. And this sort of violence continues today.

  • Israel and Its Arab Neighbors – Analysis of a Shared Conflictthe Warfighter Journal | the Warfighter Journal
7/5/2020 Israel and its Arab Neighbors – Analysis of a Shared ConflictThe Warfighter Journal | The Warfighter Journal History Israel and its Arab Neighbors – Analysis of a Shared Conflict by AJ Powell0 Comments16 min read Written by AJ Powell There has been a lot of coverage on the ages old conflict between Israel and its neighbors. This comes as no surprise given the instability of the area, the political connections to the area, and the areas war-torn history of occupation. The conflict is an ages old one driven by religion on one side, the demand for peace on the other, and both sides maintaining a stake in the areas future. What is the Middle East problem? Is it really as complicated as so many make it out to be? Or is explaining the conflict simple, leaving only the matter of solving it a complicated affair? That is the question we are attempting to answer here, and to do so, we must look at its history. Evidence shows that the conflict is simple to explain, yet complicated to solve, and the proof lay in both sides of the historical coin. To start, what is the debate all about? How do we define it, and what should we call it? Well, to sum it up: One side – very simply put – wants the other side dead. It really is as easy as that to explain. Israel wants to be recognized as a sovereign Jewish state, and live in peace with its neighbors. However, all of its Arab neighbors want it destroyed and wiped off the face of the earth.

American Victims Of The 1929 Hebron Massacre Dr. Yitzchok Levine Department of Mathematical Sciences Stevens Institute of Technology Hoboken, NJ 07030 [email protected] Introduction On August 27, 1929 The New York Times ran a front page article under the banner 8 AMERICANS LISTED IN 70 HEBRON DEAD Attack on Rabbinical College was Savage – 18 Killed in Banker’s House WOMEN AND CHILDREN SLAIN The headline was, of course, referring to the infamous and unprovoked Hebron Massacre that Arabs perpetrated on innocent Jews on August 24. Many of those killed on this Shabbos were students studying in the branch of the Slabodka Yeshiva then located in Hebron. In 1924 the Lithuanian government tried to draft into the army the majority of students studying in the Slabodka Yeshiva. This, of course, threatened the very existence of the Yeshiva. Since Rabbi Moshe Mordechai Epstein, the Rosh Yeshiva, was in America at that time, Rabbi Yechezkel Sarna tried to have the decree averted, but to no avail. After consulting Rabbi Nosson Tzvi Finkel, known as the Alter of Slabodka, it was decided to transfer the yeshiva to Eretz Yisroel. The Alter sent a telegram to Rabbi Epstein asking if he approved of the plan. Rabbi Epstein wired back his consent promising to make every effort to raise the funds necessary for the yeshiva's relocation. That same year the Alter sent Rabbi Sarna to Eretz Yisroel to choose a site for the yeshiva and to coordinate its establishment there. He was also charged with securing visas for the students. After evaluating various options, Rabbi Sarna chose the city of Hebron as the yeshiva's new home.

#2334 The Yom Kippur War and the Abomination of Desolation – The post-World War II U.S. waxing great toward the South and toward the East as a second Syria/Antiochus IV Epiphanes, part 593, Hebron Massacre of August 23-24, 1929, (xvi), Sixty-seven (67) Jews killed, and Jews would not return to Hebron until after the ‘67 war 67 Jews slain in Hebron. The most common 67 figure given for the number of Jews slain in the Hebron Massacre is sixty-seven (67). Fifty-nine (59) died during the riots and eight (8) more succumbed to their wounds later. Twelve (12) Sephardi Jews and fifty-five (55) Ashkenazi Jews were murdered. Hebron captured by Israel in ‘67. The 67 survivors of the 1929 Hebron Massacre fled to Jerusalem, and the ancient Jewish community of Hebron, which had lived in relative peace in the city for hundreds of years, was not restored until after Israel’s capture of the city during the Six-Day War in 1967. [Another source says that “a few dozen Jewish families returned to Hebron in 1931, but were evacuated again during the 1936-1939 Arab revolt in Palestine. The city had no Jewish population for 37 years until after the Six-Day War in 1967, when Jews again came to live in Hebron.”] Key Understanding: Hebron and 67. The Lord ordained the number 67 to be closely associated with Hebron through both the Hebron Massacre in 1929 and the recapture of Hebron during the 1967 Six- Day War. The prophetic relevance of the number 67 concerning the events will be addressed later.

  • The Apartheid Smear Israel Is Not an Apartheid State the Allegation Damages the Peace Process
The ApArTheid SmeAr Israel is not an apartheid state The allegation damages the peace process Professor Alan Johnson BRITAIN ISRAEL COMMUNICATIONS & RESEARCH CENTRE 2 The Apartheid Smear As a movement we recognise the legitimacy of Palestinian nationalism just as we recognise the legitimacy of Zionism as a Jewish nationalism. We insist on the right of the state of Israel to exist within secure borders, but with equal vigour support the Palestinian right to national self-determination. We are gratified to see that new possibilities of resolving the issue through negotiation have arisen since the election of a new government in Israel. We would wish to encourage that process, and if we have the opportunity, to assist.1 Nelson mandela, 1993 The whole world must see that Israel must exist and has the right to exist, and is one of the great outposts of democracy in the world … Peace for Israel means security and that security must be a reality.2 martin Luther King Jr, 1967 The charge that Israel is an apartheid state is a false and malicious one that precludes, rather than promotes, peace and harmony.3 Judge richard J. Goldstone (former Justice of the South African Constitutional Court, who led the United Nations 2008-9 fact-finding mission on the Gaza conflict), 2011 If Israel were an apartheid state, I, for example, would not be allowed to work for a Jewish newspaper or live in a Jewish neighbourhood or own a home. The real apartheid is in Lebanon, where there is a law that bans Palestinians from working in over 50 professions.

  • The Appeal of Israel: Whiteness, Anti-Semitism, and the Roots of Diaspora Zionism in Canada
THE APPEAL OF ISRAEL: WHITENESS, ANTI-SEMITISM, AND THE ROOTS OF DIASPORA ZIONISM IN CANADA by Corey Balsam A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Graduate Department of Sociology and Equity Studies in Education Ontario Institute for Studies in Education University of Toronto © Copyright by Corey Balsam 2011 THE APPEAL OF ISRAEL: WHITENESS, ANTI-SEMITISM, AND THE ROOTS OF DIASPORA ZIONISM IN CANADA Master of Arts 2011 Corey Balsam Graduate Department of Sociology and Equity Studies Ontario Institute for Studies in Education University of Toronto Abstract This thesis explores the appeal of Israel and Zionism for Ashkenazi Jews in Canada. The origins of Diaspora Zionism are examined using a genealogical methodology and analyzed through a bricolage of theoretical lenses including post-structuralism, psychoanalysis, and critical race theory. The active maintenance of Zionist hegemony in Canada is also explored through a discourse analysis of several Jewish-Zionist educational programs. The discursive practices of the Jewish National Fund and Taglit Birthright Israel are analyzed in light of some of the factors that have historically attracted Jews to Israel and Zionism. The desire to inhabit an alternative Jewish subject position in line with normative European ideals of whiteness is identified as a significant component of this attraction. It is nevertheless suggested that the appeal of Israel and Zionism is by no means immutable and that Jewish opposition to Zionism is likely to only increase in the coming years. ii Acknowledgements This thesis was not just written over the duration of my master’s degree. It is a product of several years of thinking and conversing with friends, family, and colleagues who have both inspired and challenged me to develop the ideas presented here.

  • Failed Securitzation and the Al Aqsa Intifada
Failed Securitzation and the al Aqsa Intifada Prepared by: Ilan Danjoux University of Manchester [email protected] Abstract: The decision by Israeli and Palestinian leaders to initiate bilateral negotiations in 1993 resulted from the convergence of public opinion and elite interests around the issue of national security. Diplomacy became the preferred security policy emerged in the wake of political, technological and demographic trends following the end of the Cold War. This reflected the belief that ongoing violence constituted a greater danger than territorial compromise or mutual recognition. This break down of peace talks in 2001 followed the securitization of diplomacy as the dominant danger facing both nations. What makes this case study compelling is that the divergent elite and public interpretations of the peace talks. Diplomats pursued negotiations despite widespread vocal and violent domestic opposition that broke out in the fall of 2000. While securitization is typically depicted as an elite initiative that seeks to convince a “relevant audience that a referent object is existentially threatened” (Emmers 2007: 112), the al Aqsa Intifada appears to have reversed these roles. Israeli and Palestinian publics not only communicated their rejection of diplomacy as a dangerous and unacceptable policy, but also their support for unilateral military action. Faced with the decision to ignore or acquiesce to their population’s demands, political leaders on both sides became the targets of securitization. 1 While a great deal has been written on the Oslo Peace Process, popular explanations for its collapse generally lay blame on either the belligerence of Palestinian negotiators or the unreasonable demands of Israeli diplomats.

Ehab al-Qet, a member of Madama Village Council, told the Palestinian News & Info Agency (WAFA), that the colonists attacked the southern area of the village, before local youngsters incepted them and started throwing stones at them. He added that many soldiers were in the area with the colonists and started firing a barrage of gas bombs at the villagers, causing dozens to suffer the effects of teargas inhalation. Al-Qet also said that the colonists set many olive trees ablaze, while the soldiers prevented the Palestinians from reaching their orchards to extinguish the fire.
