    Rendering of folk epic – Manteswamy Kavya 'IGNCA, SRC' and 'We Can Together' jointly organized the rendering of folk epic – ManteswamyKavyaon 29.9.2013 at SRC premises under the guidance of Prof. S. Settar, Director (Hon.) IGNCA, SRC. Smt. Usha Kattemani inaugurated the show. Mr. Rajendrakumar delivered welcome speech and introduced the epic. Mr. Radha Krishna of We Can Together conducted the programme. More than hundred witnessed the show. Kebbepura Siddaraju (who is the 3rd generation descendant in the Neelagaara family) rendered along with Kamsale Mahadevaiah, Siddaiah and Rachaiah, all from Gundlupet of Chamarajanagara Dist. Manteswamy Kavya is one of the most celebrated oral epics of Karnataka. Neelgaras, the professional singers of South Karnataka, have kept the epic alive for centuries in the districts of Mandya, Mysore, Ramanagara, Chamarajanagara and Rural Bangalore. Manteswamy was a folk hero who lived in about the fifteenth century.Legends are built around his life and temples are created defying him at Chikkelluru, Boppagoudanapura and Kappadi. Manteswamy is a living tradition in and around these centers. ‘ManteswamyKavya’ treats him on par with Allamaprabhu, a Virasiava saint of the Twelfth century. However this contention is contested. The epic begins with the arrival of Manteswamy in the city of Kalyana. He makes a dramatic appearance on a dung heap at the entrance to the city, with the dead body of a calf and a gourd full of ‘Kaḷḷu’. Basavanna’s wife takes him to the palace where a confrontation between the sharanas and Manteswamy takes place. He heralds the victory of the lowly over deceitful insincere devotees. After that, Manteswamy begins his return journey to South Karnataka, till he finds his permanent abode in Boppagoudanapura.

    Literature and Culture 739 CHAPTER XIV LITERATURE AND CULTURE Mandya district is known in the Puranas to have been a part of Dandakaranya forest. It is said there that sages such as Mandavya, Mytreya, Kadamba, Koundliya, Kanva, Agasthya, Gautama and others did penance in this area. Likewise, literature and cultural heritage also come down here since times immemorial. The district of Mandya is dotted with scenic spots like Kunthibetta, Karighatta, Narayanadurga, Gajarajagiri, Adicunchanagiri and other hills; rivers such as Kaveri, Hemavathi, Lokapavani, Shimsha and Viravaishnavi; waterfalls like Gaganachukki, Bharachukki and Shimha; and bird sanctuaries like Ranganathittu, Kokkare Bellur and Gendehosalli, which are sure to have influenced the development of literature and culture of this area. Places like Srirangapattana, Nagamangala, Malavalli, Melukote, Tonnur, Kambadahalli, Bhindiganavile, Govindanahalli, Bellur, Belakavadi, Maddur, Arethippur, Vydyanathapura, Agrahara Bachahalli, Varahnatha Kallahalli, Aghalaya, Hosaholalu, Kikkeri, Basaralu, Dhanaguru, Haravu, Hosabudanuru, Marehalli and others were centers of rich cultural activities in the past. In some places dissemination of knowledge and development of education, arts and spiritual pursuits were carried out by using temples as workshops. Preface The Textbook Society, Karnataka, has been engaged in producing new textbooks according to the new syllabi which in turn are designed on NCF - 2005 since June 2010. Textbooks are prepared in 12 languages; seven of them serve as the media of instruction. From Standard 1 to 4 there is the EVS, mathematics and 5th to 10th there are three core subjects, namely, mathematics, science and social science. NCF - 2005 has a number of special features and they are: connecting knowledge to life activities. learning to shift from rote methods. enriching the curriculum beyond textbooks. learning experiences for the construction of knowledge. making examinations flexible and integrating them with classroom experiences. caring concerns within the democratic policy of the country. making education relevant to the present and future needs. softening the subject boundaries-integrated knowledge and the joy of learning. the child is the constructor of knowledge. The new books are produced based on three fundamental approaches namely, Constructive approach, Spiral approach and Intergrated approach. The learner is encouraged to think, engage in activities, master skills and competencies. The materials presented in these books are integrated with values. The new books are not examination oriented in their nature. On the other hand they help the learner in the all round development of his/her personality, thus help him/her become a healthy member of a healthy society and a productive citizen of this great country, India.

Tourism is one of the world’s largest industries which is the major source of income. The promotion of any place as a tourist destination leads to the economic development of that area and opens various kinds of employment avenues for the local people as well. These are in the nature of tour operations, travel agencies, restaurants, hotels and working as guides. Tourism embraces every walk of life. The Kolar District is located at a distance of about 43 miles from Bangalore and 20 miles from Kolar Gold Fields. The city is located on the southern maidan (plains) region of Karnataka. The Kolar District has several attractive places with historical, cultural and religious importance. The study throws light on the opportunities and major challenges faced by Kolar District in the tourism industry. It is observed from the study that lack of various supporting systems, amenities and facilities restricted Kolar District to attract more number of tourist’s particularly foreign tourists in spite of having exotic tourist locations across the district.     Karnataka Kalasri Dr.Shridhar and Anuradha Shridhar Dr.Shridhar and Anuradha Shridhar are internationally acclaimed as the best dance couple in Bharatanatyam today. They have enthralled the audience all over the world with their astounding technical virtuosity and emotional intensity. Learning Shridhar and Anuradha were both initially trained in Bharatanatyam by Guru Smt.Radha Sridhar of Bengaluru. They were later attracted towards the Kalakshetra style and studied under the guidance of Guru Sri. M.R.Krishnamurthy of Kalakshetra. Shridhar was also fortunate to have received training from Guru Smt.Narmada, Guru Smt.Bhanumati and Guru Smt.Vasanta Vedam (Kalakshetra). He also received special training in Kuchipudi from Guru Sri C.R.Acharyulu of Darpana Academy, Ahmadabad. Shridhar was adjudged the 'Best dancer' in the state level dance competition conducted by the Karnataka Sangita Nritya Academy in the year 1982. Very soon he was recognized as one of the best male dancers in Bharatanatyam. He performed as Shiva with the legendary cine actor Smt. Hemamalini in her dance drama Durga. Shridhar is a BE graduate. Anuradha after finishing her B.Com studied at Kalakshetra College of Fine Arts, Chennai and graduated with distinction in the year 1993. Shridhar and Anuradha were later nurtured by the renowned danseuse and Guru Nritya Chudamani Smt.Krishnaveni Lakshmanan of Kalakshetra. After their marriage in the year 1991 Shridhar & Anuradha started performing together as a duo. Their stunning coordination, impeccable nritta, and deeply moving abhinayam are a feast to the connoisseurs. They received tremendous appreciation for their choreography, which is remarkably creative, imbued with deep spiritual overtones and reflects extensive research.
