Dear Alumni and Friends, Monsignor Scanlan High School has completed a challenging school year amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. We are more than standing — we are flourishing. In March, our Board determined our safest course was to close our school building and institute remote learning. Our Administration, led by Kris Keelin, in his first year as Principal, and his dedicated staff, notably his Assistant Principals, Karen McKeegan and Diane Raikes, made a seamless transition to remote learning. Kris was prepared, and we took this course before many other schools, including the New York City Public school system. We had no interruption in learning. Our teachers and students adjusted beautifully to this new teaching methodology. Our children completed the school year and all 99 of our seniors graduated with Regents diplomas. We had to cancel the prom, and we hosted a drive-by graduation, but we had very happy college-bound graduates. Physical improvements on the campus, led by Vice Chairman of the Board Joe Solimine, and our Director of Facilities, Raul Ortiz, continued apace. The campus is beautiful. When we are back to normal, you must visit. For the first time, our alumni and friends contributed over $500,000 to this year’s Annual Campaign. Thank you so much. It was a privilege for Karen Gennarelli and her staff to connect with so many of you in these difficult times. Donna Smith, Director of Finance, coordinated a combination of in-building and remote operations to maintain our financial functioning, and put together very early the package for funding from the Federal Payroll Protection Program. No staff or teachers were furloughed. In this crisis, our Board went to weekly telephonic meetings, continuing through the summer. We are now transitioning to bi-weekly telephonic meetings. The involvement of Board members, and interaction with the heads of our Administrative Departments, has been outstanding. We had projected a deficit for this past school year, as our 10-year lease of the old boys’ building to the K through 5 charter school is ramping up to enrollment in all grades, with increasing rental revenues each year. Our deficit of $511,000 for the past year was higher than projected due to many Covid-19 factors, including, a cutback in State reimbursement, reduction in tuition revenues, suspended rental of other facilities, and cancellation of fundraising events and summer school. Together with funding from the Payroll Protection Program, our cash reserves covered the deficit and will also cover this upcoming year’s projected smaller deficit. We expect to be out of deficit for the 2021-2022 school year. The current 2020-2021 school year is underway with no significant hitches. Our building is open for classes on all school days; students have the option to attend in-person or remotely. We have an intensive sanitization program, and protections for our students, teachers, and staff. Our enrollment is 436 students with 104 freshman replacing our graduating class of 99 students. Our Director of Enrollment, Chris Florentino, worked tirelessly for these results. On behalf of our remarkable children, teachers, staff, Board, and all of the Monsignor Scanlan High School Family, we thank you for your continuing support and generosity, and the tremendous good and opportunities you make possible for our students. Please stay safe, healthy and in the Grace of God. Very Truly Yours, Christopher F. Gallagher Board Chair 3 Welcome. Dear Alumni and Friends of Monsignor Scanlan High School, What a year this has been for all of us. Our school year started out promising and full of new excitement. We had the largest incoming Freshmen class in over 10 years. Our students were excited and eager to be a part of the atmosphere around the campus. Since March 13th, our school community has faced a new set of challenges. Education and campus life came to an immediate halt. We had to institute a remote online learning platform. Through the tremendous work of our faculty, staff and students, we met this challenge head on and we were able to conquer remote learning. Over the past few years, our teachers have been able to successfully increase each student’s performance both in the classroom setting and at home. Lessons were enhanced with online platforms that teachers used every day not realizing that one day those platforms would have to be used to teach remotely from home. Our extra-curricular activities also were forced to come to a sudden halt. Our spring athletic programs cancelled and our basketball team’s championship run stopped. The class of 2020’s Prom and Graduation cancelled and our annual Junior Ring night, Career Day and Honor Society Induction postponed. Like always, our students persevered through all. We had a wonderful virtual graduation and an even better senior car parade. As we were moving to remote learning, our maintenance staff took the rare opportunity of our building being empty to renovate the classrooms on the third floor. Eight classrooms on that floor received new flooring, ceilings, walls and a new color scheme. The outcome is amazing. The summer brought new guidelines from Governor Cuomo and the Department of Health for our reopening. Face masks, social distancing, temperature checks, staggered arrivals and dismissals, cohorts, visitor and cleaning guidelines are the new normal here at Monsignor Scanlan. Our opening plan was instituted to make everyone’s health and safety our top priority. We have upgraded our Wi-Fi capabilities as well as increased our internet speed to handle remote learning. Classrooms have been equipped with new technology including smart LCD screens, webcams and microphones. Our plan allowed for our students to choose how they and their families felt most comfortable about their learning. We offer in school 5 day live learning as well as at home 5 day live learning or a combination of the two types. Our school community is planning and working through this new learning together. It has been a very difficult time for our parents and students as well as all those affected by the virus. Our students are struggling with this new normal while some had to deal with a loved one who has passed from this disease. Our parents are struggling more than ever trying to make ends meet. It is with your support their son or daughter can continue their education here at Monsignor Scanlan and for this we are extremely grateful. Thank you for all your support. God Bless all those affected by this pandemic. Stay safe and stay healthy, Kris Keelin Principal MONSIGNOR SCANLAN HIGH SCHOOL Congratulations Class of 2020! Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, The Class of 2020 graduates were not able to graduate in the traditional way. But on June 12th, the graduates, their family and friends, and the faculty and staff of Scanlan were invited to view the Virtual Graduation of the Class of 2020! Nana Achampong, the Valedictorian, and Oluwatosin Williams, the Salutatorian, spoke to their Scanlan classmates from their homes, inspiring graduates and acknowledging that their Class of 2020 will always be remembered for being the class that “virtually” graduated. On June 29th our Class of 2020 graduates came back to campus to participate in the “Campus Car Parade.” Each graduate – dressed in their cap, gown and face mask – walked slowly through the campus one final time, with family and friends riding close behind them in festively adorned cars. It was a wonderful sight to see! Members of the Math, English, Science and Social Studies Honor Societies received their honor cords from Assistant Principal, Diane Raikes. Class of 2020 t-shirts, goody bags and treats were distributed by ebullient teachers, and lastly Principal Kris Keelin and Assistant Principal, Karen Santana McKeegan ’96 presented the graduates with their diplomas. Scanlan faculty, staff and coaches lined the parade route holding congratulatory signs and applauding the graduates and their families. It was a heartfelt celebration that brought tears to the eyes of many. The graduates agreed it was an amazing day and they have since suggested that the “Campus Car Parade” become an annual Scanlan tradition! On behalf of the Board of Trustees, Administration, Faculty and Staff, we congratulate the graduates of the Class of 2020! 5 SENIOR OLUWATOSIN WILLIAMS to Attend Columbia University Oluwatosin Williams, Class of 2020, was accepted to her top choice – Columbia University – through QuestBridge.
