Core III Syllabus Video games are a waste of time for men with nothing else to do. --Ray Bradbury i Video games are bad for you? That’s what they said about rock and roll. --Shigeru Miyamoto i i e r o c THE VIRTUAL OTHER IN INTERACTIVE FICTION How many worlds have you saved? How many identities have you assumed? How many times did you die jumping that chasm? Jumping in and out of parallel universes, the art that gamers consume is strange. They travel to alternate worlds, just like myriad bookworms and movie buffs, but these worlds are experienced in a truly unique way: they are interactive, which makes the game experience the product of both the creator and the consumer (to an ever-increasing degree), providing a unique perspective into our experience of the other. In this class we will survey, as broadly as possible, the realm of single player video games. We will run the gamut of interactive computerized fiction from text-based gaming like Zork and AD- VENT (as well as modern works), to the classics of the 8 and 16 bit era, all the way up to the latest and greatest works for modern consoles. However, our survey won’t be conducted in chronologi- cal order. Rather, we will split the class material into the study of various literary and artistic di- mensions, and compare and contrast said dimensions’ implementations across generational gaps. • Polygons and Practice in Skies of Arcadia
Issue 02 – 2013 Journal –Peer Reviewed ZOYA STREET Gamesbrief [email protected] Polygons and practice in Skies of Arcadia This paper features research carried out at the Victoria and Albert Museum into the design history of Sega’s 2000 Dreamcast title, Skies of Arcadia (released in Ja- pan as Eternal Arcadia). It was released by Overworks, a subsidiary of Sega, at an interesting point in Japanese computer game history. A new generation of video game consoles was in its infancy, and much speculation in the industry sur- rounded how networked gaming and large, open, tridimensional game worlds would change game design in the years ahead. Skies of Arcadia is a game about sky pirates, set in a world where islands and continents foat in the sky. I became interested in this game because it was praised in critical reviews for the real sense of place in its visual design. It is a Jap- anese Role Playing Game (JRPG), meaning that gameplay focuses on exploring a series of spaces and defeating enemies in turn-based, probabilistic battles using a system similar to that established by tabletop games such as Dungeons & Dragons. This research is based on interviews with the producer Shuntaro Tanaka and lead designer Toshiyuki Mukaiyama, user reviews submitted online over the past 10 plus years, and historically informed design analysis. It is grounded in a broader study of the networks of production and consumption that surrounded and co-produced the Dreamcast as a cultural phenomenon, technological agent and played experience. Through design analysis, oral history and archival research, in this paper I will complicate notions of tridimensionality by placing a three dimensional RPG in a broader network of sociotechnical relationships.

It seems like it's only been a few weeks since we first took our final Xboxes and GameCubes for a test drive -- and now we're almost at the end of the first quarter of the new year. While January and February are traditionally slow months for gamers, 014 things always start to get more interest- ing in March. Ironically, the games that most people are talking about this month aren't from Sony, Nintendo, or Mi- crosoft. Whether it's giving Xbox own- ers the challenging shooter GUNVAL- KYRIE, throwing down the gauntlet on PS2 with Virtua Fighter 4, or broadening GameCube's sports lineup with Soccer Slam, NBA 2K2, and Home Run King, Sega is delivering on its promise to turn heads no matter what platform you own. With that in mind, this issue of IGN Unplugged not only contains an early re- view of Virtua Fighter 4 but also a look at what could be the first true RPG for 055 GameCube, Skies of Arcadia. And it's not all about Sega, of course. Flip through this PDF mag and you will find an in-depth interview with the guys be- hind the promising multi-platformer Vexx, info on gear, movies, and DVDs, as well as a slew of game previews not yet available on our site.
