Together, they braved the unknown terrors of outer space and were changed by cosmic rays into something more than merely human! Now they are the FANTASTIC FOUR, and the world will never be the same again! A badly injured Silver Surfer crash-landed on Earth. He revealed to the Fantastic Four that he had battled a mysterious new being from another dimension who had also defeated the Surfer’s master, Galactus, and cast him into the Negative Zone. This antithesis to Galactus then began to prey on planets--but instead of devouring them, he overrides them with negative life force, turning the inhabitants into his thralls. The Fantastic Four along with the Silver Surfer ventured into the Negative Zone in search of Galactus, as Reed hoped to work with him to defeat their new common enemy. They managed to rescue Galactus, now in a weakened mortal form as Galan, but clashed with the Negative Zone’s Annihilus. In the midst of the battle, the team, along with the Surfer and Galan, were abruptly teleported into the heart of Galactus’ starship! storytellers MARK WAID & NEAL ADAMS inks • Mark Farmer color artists • Laura Martin with Andrew Crossley letterer • VC’s Joe Caramagna cover • Neal Adams & Laura Martin variant covers • Greg Land & Frank D’Armata; Alex Ross graphic designer • Carlos Lao assistant editor • Martin Biro associate editor • Alanna Smith editor • Tom Brevoort editor in chief • C.B. The entire galaxy is a mess. Warring empires and cosmic terrorists plague every corner. Someone has to rise above it all and fight for those who have no one to fight for them. A group of misfits--Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, and Flash Thompson, a.k.a. Venom--joined together under the leadership of Peter Quill, Star-Lord. With new members Kitty Pryde and Ben Grimm, a.k.a. The Thing, they serve a higher cause as the… Hala, named for the Kree Empire’s home planet, is the last surviving Accuser. Thus, she must bring justice to the perpetrators of the last crime against the Kree: the immolation of Hala’s home and namesake, for which she holds the Guardians responsible. She’s pledged to punish them by razing both of Peter Quill’s homeworlds: Spartax and Earth. She handily beat the Guardians and stranded Peter in orbit around Spartax, helpless to stop his planet’s destruction. In the Negative Zone, Annihilus and the Brood Queen realized that with the Kree Supreme Intelligence and J’Son of Spartax gone, there was no one left on the Galactic Council to rein in their devious ambitions. • Spaces of Sovereignty in Marvel's Secret Wars
Neal Curtis, ‘Doom’s Law: Spaces of Sovereignty in THE COMICS GRID Marvel’s Secret Wars’ (2017) 7(1): 9 The Comics Journal of comics scholarship Grid: Journal of Comics Scholarship, DOI: https:// doi.org/10.16995/cg.90 RESEARCH Doom’s Law: Spaces of Sovereignty in Marvel’s Secret Wars Neal Curtis University of Auckland, NZ [email protected] Sovereignty is both the foundation and source of law and the determination of the territory to which the law applies. In this latter sense, sovereignty and the law it supports are an explicitly spatial phenomenon, as can be seen in the meanings of the Greek word nomos, which aside from the law can also refer to a division that marks out a specific territory. This article posits that the Marvel crossover event entitled Secret Wars (2015, 2016) encapsulates the ways in which superhero comics might help us to understand the spatiality of sovereignty. It also considers how resistance to Doom’s law was focused on the transgression of borders and the creation of alternative spatial arrangements. Keywords: Agamben; graphic justice; law; political theory; Schmitt Introduction: When the World Goes Rogue Fifteen years of a ‘War on Terror’ have been an especially fruitful time for studying superhero comics. The exceptional politics of the Bush Doctrine encouraged numerous scholars to return to important questions about the relationship between law and violence, and the nature of a state of emergency that are central to both the superhero mythos and an understanding of sovereign power. At a time when states themselves became rogue or took on the role of the vigilante—at least from the perspective of established International Law—scholars naturally gravitated towards thinking about what the exceptional status of the superhero might tell us.
