Fantastic Four by Jonathan Hickman Omnibus Volume 2 Writer The interaction between the traditional characters and some of the newer additions to the four is great especially the later issues with spider-man. I didn't even really dislike it, but the individual stories felt really disjointed and often either rushed or too slow with a long speech bubbles filled with technobabble. This was my first Fantastic Four series, but after hearing the praise for it, I took the plunge. A lake beneath the Antarctic ice cap is threatened by AIM, who wishes to exploit its secrets. These are some incredibly inventive and imaginative tales, each laying the foundation for years' worth of storytelling - and yet each one is just set aside and on to the next. Fantastic Four by Jonathan Hickman Omnibus Volume 2 Reviews The individual issues actually remind me very much of Planetary and I think Hickman is doing a good job of channeling War My main issue with this series is that Hickman introduces really interesting ideas, building up suspense and wonder, and then the stories wrap up abruptly with a summary sheet at the end being necessary to even give us vital information about the end of these threads. Despite the subtle and overt set-up for the incursion plot line that dominated his tenure as Avengers lead writer, this collection can function entirely independently. Nov 25, Cristhian rated it it was amazing. All sales are final. In the first issue, they do rescue the kids which is nice , but utterly fail to prevent the ascension of the city; in the second issue, most of the issue is given over to a silent action sequence which is kind of unnecessary, given that Reed could almost certainly have created something to allow them to communicate underwater and plot points--explicating the nature of the Old Atlantean culture and bringing them into relation with Namor--are relegated to a text box at the end. This volume introduces us to those four cities. Hickman's FF is full of way too many ideas and craziness, but it's a heckuva lot of fun. Additional details. As a massive fan of Marvel's first family this makes me really happy. The issues presented four introductory points along the line of a big story and they all seemed to scratch a surface and leave me needing more. Sorry, but we can't respond to individual comments. I still haven't found a great book yet but the first volume was good enough that I figured I'd try the 2nd volume in Hickman's long running series. This one collects the remaining issues of both the Fantastic Four and Future Foundation titles penned by Hickman. Reading this also reminded me that, whenever the Fantastic Four is done really really well, the potential of the characters and their abilities, and their setting and their villains--all of this has no true ceiling, at least as far as telling groundbreaking science fiction stories go. He builds his mysteries in seemingly disparate ways, laying out paths that seem to diverge off in tangential lines, but they don't. Bromance at its finest! Galactus never a favorite of mine is actually pretty bad-ass in this one too. I might mix them up and read them at the same time! Related Articles. Also, he brings one arc to a head, and then abruptly shifts focus to some other storyline, but just when you think he's abandoned or forgotten the first thread, he picks it right back up. Our eBay reputation stands by our service. His ideas are very high concept, reminiscent of Grant Morrison who also consistently confuses me , but he isn't able to execute them as successfully as Morrison, who usually manages to balance character development more effectively while totally baffling us plebes with his high concepts. CREATING A SUPERHEROINE: A RHETORICAL ANALYSIS OF THE X-MEN COMIC BOOKS by Tonya R. Powers A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirements for the Degree MASTER OF ARTS Major Subject: Communication West Texas A&M University Canyon, Texas August, 2016 Approved: __________________________________________________________ [Chair, Thesis Committee] [Date] __________________________________________________________ [Member, Thesis Committee] [Date] __________________________________________________________ [Member, Thesis Committee] [Date] ____________________________________________________ [Head, Major Department] [Date] ____________________________________________________ [Dean, Fine Arts and Humanities] [Date] ____________________________________________________ [Dean, Graduate School] [Date] ii ABSTRACT This thesis is a rhetorical analysis of a two-year X-Men comic book publication that features an entirely female cast. This research was conducted using Kenneth Burke’s theory of terministic screens to evaluate how the authors and artists created the comic books. Sonja Foss’s description of cluster criticism is used to determine key terms in the series and how they were contributed to the creation of characters. I also used visual rhetoric to understand how comic book structure and conventions impacted the visual creation of superheroines. The results indicate that while these superheroines are multi- dimensional characters, they are still created within a male standard of what constitutes a hero. The female characters in the series point to an awareness of diversity in the comic book universe. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I wish to thank my thesis committee chair, Dr. Hanson, for being supportive of me within the last year. Your guidance and pushes in the right direction has made the completion of this thesis possible. You make me understand the kind of educator I wish to be. You would always reply to my late-night emails as soon as you could in the morning.

The purpose of this research is to adapt the approaches used by prominent and influential writers and artists in the American superhero/action comic-book field to create an engaging Australian hero comic book. Further, the aim of this thesis is to bridge the gap between the lack of academic writing on the professional practice of the Australian comic industry. In order to achieve this, I explored and learned the methods these prominent and professional US writers and artists use. Compared to the American industry, the creating of comic books in Australia has rarely been documented, particularly in a formal capacity or from a contemporary perspective. The process I used was to navigate through the research and studio practice from the perspective of a solo artist with an interest to learn, and to develop into an artist with a firmer understanding of not only the medium being engaged, but the context in which the medium is being created.
