The Arab Regional Centre for World Heritage (ARC-WH) is a BACKGROUND Category 2 Centre under the auspices of UNESCO that was established in 2012 as an autonomous and independent legal entity at the service of Arab States Parties to strengthen the effective implementation of the World Heritage Convention.

Based in the Kingdom of Bahrain, ARC-WH is a non-profit organisation that assists the Arab States towards the conservation, management and promotion of cultural and natural heritage, and acts as a relay to the World Heritage Centre in the Arab region. 11

In 2019, ARC-WH, in partnership with Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiques (BACA), Supreme Council for Environment (SCE), Directorate of Marine Control at the Ministry of Work and Municipality Affairs, and other national and regional partners launched a project to highlight the outstanding natural heritage of Hawar Islands (Bahrain).

The report, Assessing the Ecological and Socio-economic Natural Heritage Values of Hawar Islands, was finalised in 2020. It evaluated the ecological and socio-economic baseline of the Hawar Islands, focusing on the biodiversity components of regional and international importance. 19

The Tabe’a III Report includes three new thematic areas in the Arab region and the challenges and opportunities faced by natural heritage, such as impacts of extreme weather conditions and culture-nature interlinkages from a global and regional perspective, as well as the impacts of conflict on natural heritage sites.

Additionally, the publication provides an update on thematic activities by the Tabe’a Programme and the natural and mixed heritage sites since the previous Tabe’a II Report. It also includes a focus on developments regarding the national Tentative Lists in the Arab region. 27

ARC-WH pledged financial support to contribute to the National Museum of Beirut and technical assistance, and committed its expertise in urban heritage recovery, towards the rehabilitation of the historic core of Beirut. On 22 October 2020 UNESCO organised the third meeting to continue the mobilisation of local and international partners actively safeguarding and contributing to the revitalisation of the cultural sector of Beirut. Participants were updated on the progress of interventions and priorities in the field. The meeting aimed at facilitating the coordination of interventions and prioritisation, as well as the finalisation of UNESCO’s International Action Plan for Culture in Beirut.

ARC-WH reaffirmed its commitment towards the preservation and recovery of built cultural heritage in Beirut and informed UNESCO about its continued coordination with the DGA in Lebanon, as well as is mobilisation efforts with other stakeholders in advising for the recovery of urban heritage of the most affected area.
