LINE DRIVES THE NATIONAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL WRITERS NEWSLETTER (Volume 46, No. 2, Apr. 24, 2007) The President’s Message By NCBWA President Michael “Mex” Carey Membership: It’s hard to believe that the baseball season is nearing conference tournament time. The season has been a great one so far and things are sure to get more exciting as we get closer to conference tournaments, the NCAA Regionals and the College World Series. A young Georgetown team in the Nation’s Capitol has struggled with some injuries, but the battle for supremacy in the BIG EAST, like many other conferences across the country, are still up for debate. At the same time, our heartfelt condolences go out to everyone at Virginia Tech after the senseless tragedy that unfolded on the Blacksburg campus recently. I was not the only one, I’m sure, who was horrified by the images and though immediately of our friends who work on the campus. Pete Hughes, one of the great coaches in college baseball who I got to know when he was at Boston College and I worked at St. John’s, said it right after the Hokies’ 11-9 loss to Miami in the team’s first game after the tragedy. “We won before we got to the field today. The scoreboard was insignificant.” The board members of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association are in the process of selecting names for yearly awards. Last week, the final list for the Stopper of the Year Award will be announced and right behind that, we will have announcements for All-American nominees.

NATIONAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL WRITERS NEWSLETTER (Volume 43, No. 2, Feb. 27, 2004) NCBWA President’s Message By NCBWA President Jeff Hurd Before basketball’s March Madness descends upon us, it is a little amazing that some Division I baseball teams are approaching the 20-game mark (notably Kansas at 9-7-1 through Feb. 23 and Cal Poly at 12- 4 prior to its Feb. 25-29 games). Before you know it, the NCAA Regionals will be upon us. This absolutely is one of the busiest but most intriguing times of the college sports year with as many as 10-12 sports occurring simultaneously from baseball to men’s volleyball to golf to indoor track to gosh- knows-what. It’s also refreshing to welcome the initial 2004 NCAA Division II NCBWA poll to this month’s newsletter and to see some of the baseball teams from cooler weather regions migrating south for the annual ritual of spring break baseball. The incessant pings of the aluminum bats remind us that the sights and smells of springtime and conference baseball cannot be far off; enjoy and sneak out of the arenas when time permits for some great diamond activity. Sincerely, Jeff Hurd - NCBWA President - Western Athletic Conference NCBWA Division I Players of Week The NCBWA Division I National Players of the Week are into their third week of the 2004 season. Nominees for the aw2ard are taken from Conference players of the week and announced on Tuesday. NCBWA Vice-President Mike Montoro of Southern Miss ([email protected]) coordinates the weekly awards.

  • No Typo: Jimmy VO Has 1.900 OPS
No typo: Jimmy VO has 1.900 OPS By Todd Devlin Sept. 24, 2012 There has been no shortage of offense for Team Canada thus far at the 2013 WBC Qualifier in Regensburg, Germany -- through two games, the tournament favourites have pushed across 27 runs on 32 hits. It seems everyone has been getting in on the action. Leadoff man Tyson Gillies has recorded six hits in 10 at-bats, right-fielder Adam Loewen has five, and catcher Chris Robinson and third baseman Shawn Bowman have four hits apiece. But if offense is indeed contagious, as the old adage goes, the man responsible for starting the outbreak is Jimmy Van Ostrand . Canada’s first baseman and cleanup man leads all hitters in Regensburg in home runs (3), total bases (14), OPS (1.900) and runs scored (5), and he is second with eight RBIs. It didn’t take long for the national team vet to get in the swing of things in Germany. In Game 1 against Great Britain, he followed up a first-inning RBI with a two-run homer in the seventh that broke open Thursday’s contest and put Canada ahead 6-1. “It was nice to give us a little bit more breathing room, and we were able to keep it going and have a big inning,” Van Ostrand said. In fact, the Canadians struck for eight runs in the inning en route to an 11-1 victory by mercy rule. On Saturday, Van Ostrand was at it again. With two runners on in the first, he crushed a three-run homer to give Team Canada an early 3-0 lead.

Baltimore born and bred, Erbe signed out of third round of the ’05 draft and put Class A ball behind him by the end of the ’08 season. • A's News Clips, Wednesday, July 20, 2011 Detroit Tigers Rough Up
A’s News Clips, Wednesday, July 20, 2011 Detroit Tigers rough up A's Guillermo Moscoso By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune DETROIT -- Guillermo Moscoso took the mound in the fifth inning Tuesday with a two-run lead. He exited not long after that, learning a painful lesson in how quickly the tide can turn against the Detroit Tigers. Moscoso was tagged for six runs in the fifth, an avalanche that buried the A's in an 8-3 loss at Comerica Park to begin their two-city, five-game trip. Moscoso, so dependable for Oakland this season as injuries have decimated the rotation, allowed six hits over a span of seven batters. That included two-run homers by Miguel Cabrera and Carlos Guillen that turned a 3-1 A's lead into a 7-3 deficit. "That's what's most frustrating," Moscoso said. "We came back and (scored) runs. We played very good baseball, and we lost the game in one inning." Moscoso (3-5) was making his first big league start since July 6 as the A's skipped his turn and reworked their rotation because of the All-Star break. He pitched for Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday, and he brought a 2.16 major league ERA for the season into the game. But he was charged with seven runs (six earned) and nine hits over 42/3 innings Tuesday. Those six earned runs were the most by an A's starter since Trevor Cahill gave up six in a June 9 loss to the Chicago White Sox, Bob Melvin's first game as A's manager.
