FILM FLASHBACK A Lonely Woman (Kobieta Samotna) directed by Agnieszka Holland (1981)

What makes Holland such a good filmmaker is her ability, like Kieślowski, to demonstrate character very cannily through body language, dialogue and incidents in short poignant scenes. It gives a nice pace to her films.

One had hoped that the lonely woman of the title would find some solace, but when she does, it is fleeting and ill luck seems to haunt her at every angle. The view of life represented here is so dark and hopeless that one doubts it could be real. But of course, even 20 years after the fall of the Iron Curtain, one often hears the lament - “tu nic nie ma” (“there’s nothing here”)... Indeed, Holland comments that the script was inspired by diaries that she and her co-writer had chanced upon. The heroine is a single, desperate woman heading towards middle-age – walking on the black coals that lie in her one room, single-handedly looking after her young boy, whilst the whole neighbourhood seems murderously against her. Unfortunately, hers is a road to hell (although she has the kindest heart in the entire film) and it is paved with the twisted and selfish intentions of the other protagonists.

In trying to come to terms with what is presented here, the only solution I found is to view the whole film metaphorically as a cry of protest against the communist system – which twists the goodness out of everyday people, creating liars, ma- nipulators, threatening losers and violent, alcoholic lovers – these are the characters in the film. Even her young boy is not left untouched as he dreams of a soldier’s life gunning people down in the street, in a scene reminiscent of the 60s cult film If....

There is no respite for the woman. The day to day hardships are unendurable and her only crime is trying to be a good but single mother. It is as if she is being malevolently, sadistically punished by fate for missing her chance at happiness. Howev- er, it must be said, no one else is presented as happy either. Perhaps the Pessimism should be viewed as Absurdity instead?

Occasional references to the Solidarity movement show them as an impersonal political force ignoring the immediate needs of the everyday working individuals – a provocation that was teasingly deliberate. Perhaps we expect something happier from films nowadays and are suspicious of these glaring probes into life when it indecently shows its sickly underbelly. But this film is not meant as “entertainment.” The film shows a period in Poland’s recent history which needs to be remem- bered for all its subtle personal tragedies and not just the bare political facts. This is the achievement of the film. Whereas Kieślowski’s Decalogue ignored politics as a frame of reference, this film allows its presence even in such a personal tale. But in this world of inflated frustrations no-one comes out on top - the conclusions are bleak. This woman’s soul has been watered down; she dreams of the railway tracks that run beside her house as if, although she wishes to get away, the limited wits of her imagination will not allow her to see beyond the confines of her own dire fate.

A Lonely Woman reveals the skilful beginnings of Holland’s authorship - the talent which would go on to make Europa, Eu- ropa and Washington Square, amongst other more commercial films.

The film is available from Telewizja Kinopolska as part of a box set of Holland’s early Polish work, all with English subtitles.

PHOTO OF THE MONTH REEL LIFE Milk Gus Van Sant gets political

From “butch” (Brad Davis in Querelle) to fantasising “fem” (John Hurt’s captivat- ing Oscar performance in Kiss of the Spiderwoman) to “cute” (Matthew Broderick in Torch Song Trilogy and everyone in between (Antonio Banderas, Russell Crowe, Tom Hanks etc), we’ve seen it all in Hollywood’s “straight doing queer” parade. In Milk, Sean Penn does it “fey” - and we accept him in the role without misgivings. His handsome boyfriend, played by James Franco, is more “I just happen to be,” while Emile Hirsch, seen in last year’s Into the Wild, undergoes a total transfor- mation. Biopics tend to glamorise and depoliticise, but the opening documentary footage here addresses this. These are real events – early 1970s California - a dozen or so men manhandled by police into the back of a police van, some hiding their identity in shame of exposure of their sexual orientation (almost exactly 500 years earlier the same treatment was dished out to Leonardo Da Vinci – plus ca change..) Coloured in 70s-feel kodachrome, we follow Harvey Milk’s struggle to become the first openly gay man elected to U.S. office (San Francisco City Supervi- sor), and he holds our attention with a decent dose of warmth and humour, where the “Personal” is evidently very “Political.” He paid the ultimate price for his commitment to gay rights - meaning civil rights - and was eerily prescient about his assassination, recording a long statement beforehand. “If a bullet should enter my brain, let that bullet destroy every closet door,” is one quote which resonates. Worth watching as a companion piece to this film is the Oscar winning 1984 docu- mentary The Times of Harvey Milk - try YouTube. Stuart Wilson

SHELF IMPROVEMENT Christine by Madeleine Masson Acclaimed biography of WWII spy

When this revised edition was rushed out in 2005, writer Madeleine Masson en- tered the Guinness Book Of Records as the oldest lady in the world to sell the film rights to a book. She was 93 at the time. Sadly, she’s no longer with us, but the book endures as a wonderful tribute, not only to her own talents, but to the extraordinary subject of this biography - Christine (aka Krystyna Skarbek - see main feature p. 15). As it turns out, Masson was ideally suited to writing the biography of an underground agent, as she herself had served in the . She makes no mention of this in the book, but perhaps it is also why so many friends of “Christine” were prepared to cooperate on the project. And here lies one of the main strengths of the book. In depth testimonies provide the life-blood of the story, including those of Christine’s fellow agent and long-time February’s Photo of the Month was taken by Rob Purvis lover Andrzej Kowerski. Luckily, rather than closing down, Pauza continues to vertically expand and now includes a cellar club, a first floor bar, and a second floor gallery and cinema. The main draw, however, remains the original Pauza cafe and bar which is renowned for its cool clients and laid back atmosphere. FORK OUT

Aperitif ul. Sienna 9, (12) 432 3333, [email protected]

Another day and another space along the cobble-stoned streets of the Old Town is converted into a shining new beacon to clubbing, dining or shopping. With a combination of apprehension and curiosity I headed over to the Mały Rynek to check out Oczko’s replacement - Aperitif.

Reading the menu outside was immediately a relief once I realized that at the very least I will not be reduced to looking for contenders for the best schabowy or pizza in Krakow (an eternally futile pursuit). Inside I browsed excitedly through appetizers, mains, and pastas and realized that Aperitif is taking quite a different approach to cooking compared to many other restaurants open in Krakow today. One might call it an apprehensive step towards fusion, as Aperitif introduces some new flavors An appetising dessert at Aperitif / photo by Mateusz Majewski (such as the teriyaki-cured salmon) while re-inventing some European classics we’re all accustomed to.
