Skip to Content Search Cal Poly News News California Polytechnic State University Sept. 11, 2006 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Jazz Trio Plays Spanos Theatre Oct. 4 SAN LUIS OBISPO – In a spectacular showcase featuring jazz greats Bill Frisell (guitar/banjo), Jack DeJohnette (drums, percussion, piano) and Jerome Harris (electric bass/vocals), Cal Poly Arts launches its new 2006-07 performing arts season. The trio of master musicians will perform on Wednesday, October 4, 2006 at 8 p.m. in the Spanos Theatre. The evening will include highlights from the acclaimed release, “The Elephant Sleeps But Still Remembers.” Recorded at Seattle’s Earshot Festival in October 2001, “The Elephant Sleeps But Still Remembers” brilliantly captures the collaboration of two unparalleled musical visionaries: Jack DeJohnette -- “our era’s most expansive percussive talent” (Jazz Times) -- and Bill Frisell, “the most important jazz guitarist of the last quarter of the 20th century” (Acoustic Guitar). DeJohnette and Frisell first worked together in 1999. “We immediately had a rapport and we talked about doing more,” DeJohnette recalls. Frisell needed no convincing: “I have been such a fan of Jack’s since the late ’60s when I first heard him,” the guitarist says. “He’s been such an influence and inspiration throughout my musical life.” The two got together the afternoon before the 2001 Earshot concert and at the soundcheck, ran through a couple of numbers, but the encounter was largely improvised. “We had a few themes prepared,” Frisell says, “but it was pretty much just start playing, and go for it.” According to DeJohnette, “Bill and I co-composed in real time, on the spot” for “The Elephant Sleeps...” The album features 11 tracks covering a breadth of sonic territories. -

This jazz dialect was developed in the decade following the Nazi occupation of Norway, when Norwegians utilized jazz as a subtle tool of resistance to Nazi cultural policies. This dialect was further enriched through the Scandinavian residencies of African American free jazz pioneers Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman, and George Russell, who tutored Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek. Garbarek is credited with codifying the “Nordic sound” in the 1960s and ‘70s through his improvisations on numerous albums released on the ECM label. Throughout this document I will define, describe, and contextualize this sound concept. Today, the Nordic sound is embraced by Norwegian musicians and cultural institutions alike, and has come to form a significant component of modern Norwegian artistic identity. This document explores these dynamics and how they all contribute to a Norwegian jazz scene that continues to grow and flourish, expressing this jazz identity in a world marked by increasing globalization. -

TMH-QPSR 4/1997 Preferred swing ratio in jazz as a function of tempo Anders Friberg and Andreas Sundström Abstract In jazz music it is common to perform consecutive eighth notes with an alternating duration pattern of long-short. The exact duration ratio (the swing ratio) of the long-short pattern has been largely unknown. The first experiment describes measurements of the swing ratio in the ride cymbal from well-known jazz recordings. The second experiment was a production task where subjects adjusted the swing ratio of a computer generated performance to a preferred value. Both these experiments show that the swing ratio varies approximately linearly with tempo. The swing ratio can be as high as 3.5:1 at comparatively slow tempi around 120 bpm. When the tempo is fast the swing ratio reaches 1:1, that is, the eighth notes are performed evenly. The duration of the short note in the long-short pattern is approximately constant (≅ 100 ms) for medium to fast tempi. Introduction swing ratio. Representing the prestigious lineage of today’s great jazz families, DeJohnette/Coltrane/Garrison explore open improvisation as well as their own compositions. A NEA Jazz Master and Grammy Award-winner, Jack DeJohnette makes his return to the CAP UCLA family and Royce Hall where he previously performed as part of a jazz trio in 2013 with Keith Jarrett and Gary Peacock. DeJohnette/Coltrane/Garrison went through a rebirth in 2016 and have been touring ever since. They first performed the music of the late John Coltrane, Ravi’s father at The Brooklyn Museum. Named after the master sitarist Ravi Shankar, Coltrane is a Grammy nominated saxophonist who has released six albums to date. Matthew Garrison, son of the late Jimmy Garrison who was John Coltrane’s bassist, became a talented bass guitarist in part thanks to his godfather Jack DeJohnette. Garrison has collaborated with several jazz musicians including CAP Alums John Scofield and Pat Metheny. In 1998 Garrison founded GarrisonJazz Productions where he produces, promotes, and markets his music as well as providing music education. -

Dave Hartl’s 2017 Top Ten (Or So) Most Influential Albums It’s time once again to look back and do that annual tradition of picking out the 10 or so most influential albums I heard in the past year. Not the most popular, or even the best, but what made me think the most as a musician. You can always go to http://www.davehartl.com/top10.html and look at other years’ postings. The links there go all the way back to 1998, when I started this with George Tucker. It’s a way of hearing about great music you might otherwise miss. If you want to contribute, please write to [email protected] with your own list and your contribution will be added to this document online for future downloads. This is why I do this! It always gives me some great recommendations for what to listen to that would be off my radar otherwise. So don’t be shy! Last year, Brian Groder, Jack Loughhead, and Kaz Yoshihara gave me some great things to listen to. 1.) John McLaughlin & the 4th Dimension: Live at Ronnie Scott’s 2017 saw the farewell American tour of the great guitarist John McLaughlin, who joined up with fellow guitarist Jimmy Herring for an unbelievable 3-set night concluding with pieces from his old Mahavishnu Orchestra days (you can see an entire concert at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPWa9F4UBQQ&t=19s, highly recommended!). This CD was recorded in London with McLaughlin’s working band of the last decade, the 4th Dimension, about 7 months ahead of the aforementioned American tour, but it shows a microcosm of that concept, opening with 1971’s Meeting of the Spirits and working through pieces showcasing the amazing drummer Ranjit Barot and his Indian classical influences, bassist Etienne M’Bappé’s multilevel constructions, and Gary Husband’s otherworldly synth textures, blowout chops, and energetic drumming. -

He began his Broadway stage career as The Tap Dance Kid, and continued with Black and Blue, Jelly's Last Jam, and his unprecedented award-winning Bring in da Noise Bring in da Funk, which garnered him a Tony Award for Best Choreography. He choreographed the multiple Tony Award nominee and Broadway sensation Shuffle Along with his longtime collaborator George C. Wolfe. In addition to his extensive Broadway career as a performer and choreographer, Savion has created many tap shows that tour worldwide including Bare Soundz, Classical Savion, OM, StepZ, Solo in Time, Sole Sanctuary, Improvography, Footnotes, and Savion Glover's Holiday Spectacular. In addition to creating his ongoing body of work, Savion has enjoyed performing worldwide with jazz legends including McCoy Tyner, Roy Haynes, and Jack DeJohnette. Mr. Glover's film credits include Tap, starring Gregory Hines and Sammy Davis, Jr.; Spike Lee's Bamboozled, and George Miller's Happy Feet and Happy Feet Two. He has appeared on television in commercials for Nike and is a longstanding performer on Sesame Street. As a child, Glover was privileged to dance with and be guided by the great Bunny Briggs, Buster Brown, Lon Chaney, Gregory Hines, Sammy Davis, Jr., Jimmy Slyde and Diane Walker.
