INDIVIDUAL GAMES 4 Games and sports are important parts of our lives. They are essential to enjoy overall health and well-being. Sports and games offer numerous advantages and are thus highly recommended for everyone irrespective of their age. Sports with individualistic approach characterised with graceful skills of players are individual sports. Do you like the idea of playing an individual sport and be responsible for your win or loss, success or failure? There are various sports that come under this category. This chapter will help you to enhance your knowledge about Athletics, Badminton, Gymnastics, Judo, Swimming, Table Tennis, and Wrestling. ATHLETICS Running, jumping and throwing are natural and universal forms of human physical expression. Track and field events are the improved versions of all these. These are among the oldest of all sporting competitions. Athletics consist of track and field events. In the track events, competitions of races of different distances are conducted. The different track and field events have their roots in ancient human history. History Ancient Olympic Games are the first recorded examples of organised track and field events. In 776 B.C., in Olympia, Greece, only one event was contested which was known as the stadion footrace. The scope of the games expanded in later years. Further it included running competitions, but the introduction of the Ancient Olympic pentathlon marked a step towards track and field as it is recognised today. There were five events in pentathlon namely—discus throw, long jump, javelin throw, the stadion foot race, and wrestling. 2021-22 Chap-4.indd 49 31-07-2020 15:26:11 50 Health and Physical Education - XI Track and field events were also present at the Pan- Activity 4.1 Athletics at the 1960 Summer Hellenic Games in Greece around 200 B.C.

Sindhu, Sakshi Malik who won medals, and Dipa Karmakar and others who came close have ensured that we have some reason to smile as they demonstrated that Indian sportspersons can compete at the highest levels in any world stage. Much has been said and written about India’s performance in the Rio 2016 Olympics. In any corporate context, the accountability for poor performance by a company rests on its management and the Board of Directors. Similarly, citizens and sports lovers as stakeholders should hold sports associations and sports administrators accountable for the performance of India at sporting events. InGovern has been a champion of good corporate governance in India. In this report, we aim to assess whether we can apply similar principles of governance to sports associations.

INDIAN OLYMPIC ASSOCIATION QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER | JANUARY FEBRUARY MARCH 2020 From the President’s Desk Dear IOA Members and Colleagues, As you are all aware, an unprecedented situation confronts the world today due to the COVID-19 pandemic. These are testing times and we need to be brave and disciplined. In these challenging times, the safety and well-being of our athletes is of utmost importance and all support must be extended to ensure the same. It is also heartening that a large number of IOA members have pledged support towards the PM Cares Fund for the cause of our nation’s fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. This truly magnanimous and generous response from our National Sports Federations, State Olympic Associations and Executive Council Members is extremely heartening in this time of need and I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you. Due to the constantly changing environment and the resulting postponement of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, the new dates for the Games of the XXXII Olympiad have been announced and they are scheduled to be held from 23 July 2021 to 8 August 2021. I am sure that all Olympic NSFs have shared communication about the postponement with their qualified and probable athletes. I congratulate all athletes who have achieved Tokyo Olympic qualification in the last quarter. I hope you will work towards bettering your sporting performance in the run up to the Games.
