Introduction

Many over-the-counter ‘pain-killers’ () contain compounds which reduce the ability of the blood to form a clot, and this can cause haemorrhage during and after surgery. Unfortunately, surgery is likely to be postponed if these medications are taken within 3 weeks of surgery. If in doubt, please consult your GP.

and do NOT affect blood clotting, and these can be taken at any time prior to surgery.  WARFARIN and Clopidogrel: These should NEVER be stopped or changed without advice from either your GP or Cardiologist.

Food / Tablets to be avoided for 3 weeks before surgery:

(1) FOOD & HERBAL MEDICINES

 ALL SPICY FOODS (eg curry)  GARLIC, GINGER, GINSENG, GINGKO BILOBA, ‘DEVIL’S CLAW’

(2) -CONTAINING MEDICINES

Aspirin is present in many medications. Some of the medications below are common trade names containing aspirin.

(4) Antiplatelet agents (advice from your GP or cardiologist is required)
