Vassileva, Svetla - Soprano Vassileva, Svetla - Soprano Biography Svetla Vassileva appears on many of the worldʹs leading operatic stages, including ROH Covent Garden, Wiener Staatsoper, Opéra National de Paris, Teatro alla Scala, San Francisco Opera, NCPA Beijing, New National Tokyo Theatre, Sydney Opera Theatre, New Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv, Washington Opera et al. A native of Bulgaria, Dobrich, born on September 9, 1965, Svetla Vassileva graduated in The Academy of Music in Sofia. Svetla Vassileva performed in a wide range of roles encompassing the repertoire of Puccini, Mozart, Donizetti, Leoncavallo, Hindemith, Verdi and Weill working with conductors such as Bruno Bartoletti, Riccardo Muti, Zubin Mehta, Lorin Maazel, George Pretre, Riccardo Chailly, Daniele Gatti, Vladimir Jurowski, Kent Nagano, Daniel Oren, Yutaka Sado, Jeffrey Tate, and Yuri Temirkanov. She has acclaimed as Mimì at La Scala of Milan, directed by Franco Zeffirelli and conducted by Gustave Dudamel, Suor Angelica, directed by Ronconi and conducted by Chailly. Svetla had a great experience singing La Traviata under the direction of Marta Domingo and right after she started a big collaboration with the biggest tenor of our days, Plácido Domingo, concerts all around the world, I Pagliacci, conducted by Riccardo Muti and directed by Liliana Cavani, La Traviata and I Pagliacci at ROH Covent Garden. For many years she has collaborated with Maestro Bartoletti, with whom she has sung I Pagliacci at Chicago Lyric Opera and Genova, Giovanna d'Arco and Otello at Festival Verdi Parma, Die sieben todsünden, directed by Hugo de Ana in Macerata, and Cardillac, directed by Liliana Cavani in Genova. She obtained a wonderful reviews of public and critics for her emotional interpretation of Madama Butterfly all around the world, i. e. Arena di Verona directed by Zeffirelli, Sevilla, San Francisco conducted by Luisotti, La Bastille-Paris directed by Bob Wilson, Wiener Staatsoper, and Teatro San Carlo in Naples conducted by Pinchas Steinberg. She had one of her biggest recognitions with Francesca da Rimini by Zandonai at Opera Bastille in Paris directed by Giancarlo del Monaco. Her latest successes are Tosca at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein and in Bari, Andrea Chénier in Bari and Trieste, the debut in Aida in Genua, and the reprise of Gomes’ Lo Schiavo for the opening season of Cagliari. She has sung Verdi’s Requiem conducted by Lorin Maazel at Festival Verdi (Parma, Jerusalem, and Masada), Rossini's Stabat Mater at La Scala of Milan with Chailly, Mahler's Symphony No. 4 in Bologna with Gatti, and Die vier letzten lieder by Strauss for the inauguration of the new airport in Mahon. Her discography includes CD & DVD recordings: Le nozze istriane by Smareglia (live from Trieste; CD), Aleko and Francesca da Rimini by Rahmaninov with BBC Orchestra (CD), Francesca da Rimini by Zandonai (CD), Pagliacci (with Roberto Alagna; DVD), Pagliacci (with Plácido Domingo; DVD), Giovanna D’Arco (DVD), La Traviata (DVD), Falstaff (DVD), and Ernani (DVD) with Montecarlo Opera. Svetla Vassileva concert performances include Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 in Bologna with Daniele Gatti, Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Roma with Yuri Temirkanov, Rossini's Stabat Mater conducted by Riccardo Chailly, and Verdi’s Messa da Requiem conducted by Lorin Maazel in Parma. GIUSEPPE VERDI LA TRAVIATA LOS ANGELES OPERA JUNE 13, 2006 By Carol Jean Delmar OperaOnline.us Although Los Angeles Opera’s new production of “La Traviata” boasts some pretty fancy chirping, “it just ain’t got no soul” -- even though there is a jazz band on the stage of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in the Act II party sequence. It’s a young “Traviata.” Violetta is no longer the Parisian courtesan Verdi patterned after Marie Duplessis, renamed Marguerite Gautier, in Alexandre Dumas’ “La Dame aux Camélias,” a memoristic novel, then play, which Dumas wrote based on his ill-fated love affair with Duplessis, who died of tuberculosis in 1847 at the age of 23. Because of the morés of the times, early productions of “Traviata” were set in the 1700s, since audiences simply wouldn’t tolerate an opera based on the life of a young man of class having a steady relationship with a fallen woman, even if she had indeed acquired the social graces of the élite. Of course later productions were modernized to the mid-1800s. But Marta Domingo’s new production is far more youthful. She has moved the action to the 1920s. And although the synopsis in the program places it in Paris, Domingo clearly assigns it to the flapper era in the United States, according to her program note. The production has a decidedly American flair to it, with art-deco disco touches, mirrored spinning balls hanging from the rafters, and Ziegfield Follies-type dancers flitting around the stage.
