Supporting information for: Pärtel, J., Pärtel, M. & Wäldchen, J. 2021. Plant image identification application demonstrates high accuracy in Northern Europe. AoB PLANTS. Appendix 1. Results for the species not in database Taxa not known to the machine learning model, i.e. those on which the classifier was not trained, could not be recognized. The model is unable to determine whether an image belongs to an unknown taxon it has never seen before and will wrongly identify a known taxon with the highest degree of similarity. Typically, the highest degree of similarity is still so low that no suggestions will be given for the user. Here we extracted the best match information directly from the Flora Incognita server but did not use these species in our analyses since the model’s prediction can only be interpreted in a meaningful way for taxa on which it was actually trained. The five unknown species were only found in the database study. Some of them were garden plants, or had a northern or eastern distribution. (1) Draba incana has an arcotmontane distribution which reach its SW border in Estonia, the most similar species in the Flora Incognita database was Arabis hirsuta. (2) Lychnis chalcedonica originates from continental Eurasia but is used as an ornamental garden plant. In Estonia it sometimes spreads to nature. Flora Incognita is focusing on European natural plants, even if many naturalized ones are included. The most similar species found was Phlox paniculata. (3) Moehringia lateriflora is distributed in Eurasia, reaching in its E border in Estonia. The most similar match was Cardamine californica. -

Deep oppositely arranged along the upright stems. A star on our purple stripes decorate the upper and lower lip of the Order Beds! Sun and average garden soil. 4 & T2 interior of the petals. Anthers are white and black striped. Salvia coccinea ‘Brenthurst’ - (Lamiaceae) Ornamental, horned seedpods appear in late summer. (A/TP) to 2.5'. A cool-coloured cousin of the red bedding 3 & T3 Salvia with numerous spikes of bicoloured, lipped blooms. -

Qinghai Journey to the Stone Mountain A Greentours Tour Report 25th June – 11th July 2012 Led by Chris Gardner & Başak Gardner Day 1 25th June Departure We departed various European airports, Turkey and New Zealand. Day 2 26th June China - Chengdu Everyone and everything arrived at our hotel in the Tibetan quarter of Chengdu in time for a tasty dinner. Some had arrived in enough time to explore the nearby streets and sample the bustle of Chinese city life. Day 3 27th June Wolong Our last western breakfast for a while and then we set off through the confusing Chengdu streets choc-a-bloc with cars, scooters, bikes and buses. It did look like we’d escaped quite easily until it transpired we were on the wrong road. Fortunately not that wrong and a quick cross country detour via an extensive area of tree nurseries put us back on track and then climbing into the lush, green foothills although the road which passes alongside the thundering river was as rough in parts and still being put back together after the devastating earthquake of a few years ago. Nearer to our destination large bushes of Rosa filipes could be seen in the shrubberies and White-capped Water Redstart on a mid-stream boulder. A delicious lunch was followed by a foray into the incredible greenness first to a small gorge where we found many of the delicate blue Corydalis flexuosa, the peculiar hanging petals of Saxifraga rufescens, deep pink Geranium pylzowianum, a few flowers still on Deutzia longifolia, foamy masses of Rodgersia aesculifolia and then Joan spotted the towering stem of a Cardiocrinum giganteum ssp yunnanense on the slope above still with three or four good white Greentours Natrual History Holidays www.greentours.co.uk 1 flowers enriched with crimson stripes. -

Shealy, Jr. ABSTRACT In 2002 a unique population of Hydatica Necker ex Gray 1821 (Appalachian Saxifrage) was discovered by Patrick McMillan in the upper Piedmont of Pickens County, SC, growing on a low-elevation granite dome within the Nature Conservancy’s Nine Times nature preserve. The plants appeared to be similar to the widespread Hydatica petiolaris (Raf.) Small populations of the Blue Ridge Escarpment (BRE). However, the Pickens County population displays an annual life form and flowers during the late winter and early spring, in contrast to the perennial life forms and late spring through early fall flowerings of the BRE population. -

Schlechtendalia 26: 1–66. Die vorliegende Schrift widmet sich der hochschuldidaktischen Erschließung der reichhaltigen Sammlung ostasiatischer Pflanzen im Botanischen Garten Halle, insbesondere der des Pflanzenbestandes in dem 2011 erbauten Ostasien-Haus. Dargestellt werden Beispiele für Wuchsformen, Konvergenz, Disjunktionen, Xeromorphosen, immer- und sommergrünes Verhalten sowie für morphologische und ökomorphologische Phänomene. Behandelt werden gleichfalls Beispiele für Gattungen mit sowohl rezenten als auch fossilen Arten, für wichtige Farn-Familien mit ihren Feldmerkmalen sowie Fragen der Laubfallrhythmik und Lebensdauer der Blätter bei laurophyllen Gehölzen. Ergänzt werden die laurophyllen ostasiatischen Gehölze durch einige Arten aus anderen Lorbeerwaldgebieten der Erde. Acht Lagepläne für Gewächshaus und Freiland erleichtern das Auffinden der Lehrinhalte dieses didaktischen Konzepts. Dalkin Another eventful year comes to a close, with an enchanting Winter interlude just around the corner. Yet, even during this quiet time in the Garden, Daniel, the Head Gardener, and the team of volunteers continue to plan ahead for next year’s growing season. The featured article, “More Than Just Gardening”, will touch upon some of the goings-on behind the scenes. Last year at this time, we highlighted the many helpful people that make everything happen an- nually, with the “Three Cheers For Volunteers” article. This focus continues always as we salute their amazing efforts, recognizing the thousands of volun- teer hours they clock-in for the Garden’s benefit. We can’t thank them enough for all their generosity! How very fortunate we are for everyone's support and collaboration. Additionally, we also want to share with you some other interesting develop- ments onsite at the Garden: We’re so excited that loads of new plants have been re-introduced back into the garden; increasing plant diversity annually is the goal for the next few years. As you know this vegetative inventory is based strictly on what Mr. Reader originally planned. FoRRGS fund-raising pro- GARDEN SOCIETY vides for this initiative by purchasing the required unusual seeds, rare plants, shrubs, etc. in cooperation with the Head Gardener. You may have also noticed some of the bee hotels that were dotted throughout the entire garden. Everyone knows the importance bees play in our environ- ments. -
