Music theory is all about the rules for writing music. In pages 2-25, we study some of the basic rules that were agreed to centuries ago including: • Organizing pitches into key signatures, major scales, and minor scales • Recognizing intervals and scale degrees • Organizing rhythms and rests into time signatures • Describing the form of melodies • Connecting written music to playing string instruments In pages 26-48, we visit several cultures around the world to see how these rules were used and more! Apart from standard unaccompanied works by Tōru Takemitsu and Kazuo Fukushima, other Japanese flute compositions have yet to establish a permanent place in the standard flute repertoire. The purpose of this document is to broaden awareness of Japanese flute compositions through the discussion, analysis, and evaluation of substantial flute sonatas by three important Japanese composers: Ikuma Dan (1924-2001), Hikaru Hayashi (1931- 2012), and Akira Tamba (b. 1932). A brief history of traditional Japanese flute music, a summary of Western influences in Japan’s musical development, and an overview of major Japanese flute compositions are included to provide historical and musical context for the composers and works in this document. Discussions on each composer’s background, flute works, and compositional style inform the following flute sonata analyses, which reveal the unique musical language and characteristics that qualify each work for inclusion in the standard flute repertoire. These analyses intend to increase awareness and performance of other Japanese flute compositions specifically and lesser- known repertoire generally.

Thomas Botting November 8th, 2018 ii Abstract This research focuses on the development of a personal musical idiolect for solo double bass through the assimilation of extended techniques and preparations. The research documents the process from inception to creative output. Through an emergent, practice-led initial research phase, I fashion a developmental framework for assimilating new techniques and preparations into my musical vocabulary.The developmental framework has the potential to be linear, reflexive or flexible depending on context, and as such the tangible outcomes can be either finished creative works, development of new techniques, or knowledge about organisational aspects of placing the techniques in musical settings. Analysis of creative works is an integral part of the developmental framework and forms the bulk of this dissertation. The analytical essays within contain new knowledge about extended techniques, their potential and limitations, and realities inherent in their use in both compositional and improvisational contexts. Video, audio, notation and photos are embedded throughout the dissertation and form an integral part of the research project.

    F U S I O N FRÉDÉRIC ALARIE Frédéric Alarie amazes by the colour, depth and audacity he puts forward in his work: as a musician, composer or soloist, he constantly pushes the limits of both his own expression and of jazz itself. In 2016 The International Society of Bassists (ISB), owner of Scott LaFaro’s famous restored bass, exceptionally lent the precious instrument to Frédéric, to use for his tribute concert at the Montreal International Jazz Festival. Frédéric composed Miséricorde, a requiem filled with emotions wavering from darkness to illumination, as a tribute to his late father. The composition presents an unusual encounter between a choir and a double bass. ABOUT THE ALBUM This recording is challenging to your sound system in the low register and the warmth of the second harmonics is very present here. An album that emphasises the bass instrument is rare. This album fully demonstrates the versatility of the instrument. OCTOBASS The Octobass can be heard on track 1. At a height of almost 11.5 ft., the octobass is the lowest-pitched and largest-sized instrument of the entire string family. This instrument produces extreme low bass extension harmonics: down to 20 Hz with a peak at 28 Hz. The performer must climb up on a small stool to access the neck of the instrument, and it is only by means of levers and pedals – not with the hands – that the strings can be reached and sounded. The bow is longer and heavier than the bow of an ordinary string bass. There are only 6 octobass world-wide.

The Giant’s Violin video introduces the violin, viola, cello, and bass. The story highlights these four string instruments, which are the heart of the symphony orchestra. Violin (vai-uh-lin), Viola (vee-oh-luh), and Cello (cheh-low) are all made of wood, have 4 strings, and use a bow (rhymes with go) to draw out the sound. Violin The violin is the smallest and sounds like a little sister’s voice. It is played by holding it under the chin. Viola The viola is bigger with a sound like a mother’s voice and it is also held under the chin. Cello The cello is much bigger.
