LEAVING IN THE PAST: THE ROLE HISTORY PLAYS IN VIDEO GAMES by JOSEPH FORDHAM (Under the Direction of Craig Roell) ABSTRACT How can something considered by many within academia as childish or a waste of time be potentially useful in presenting or even studying history? Not only has the video game industry grown into one of the largest forms of media in the world, but these games are also finding use as a training aid for the military and major companies, as an advertising medium, and, most importantly, as a tool for teaching. As developmental capabilities improve with new generations of graphics hardware, video games are turning towards the recreation of real-world and historical events. This drive towards realism and accuracy also brings an increase in the amount of historical research done in order to insure the accuracy of a game’s content. -

Gestartet wurde dieses Community-Projekt mit der Bezeichnung „Das spielen unsere User“ – oder abgekürzt „DU“ – bereits ein Jahr zuvor, im Januar 2015 (das PDF mit allen 2015er Beiträgen findet ihr in dieser News). Somit stellt die aktuelle Zusammenfassung den 2. Jahrgang dar. Die einzelnen Plus-Galerien im Nachhinen auf GamersGlobal.de aufzurufen, ist der- zeit nur über die Suchfunktion möglich, da sich die Beiträge naturgemäß längst im digitalen Archiv befinden. Das kann durchaus als bedauerlich empfunden werden, da die teilnehmenden User in der Regel Zeit und Mühe investiert haben. Mit diesem eigens aufbereiteten PDF wird diesem Umstand erneut Abhilfe geschaen, denn die nachfolgenden Seiten enthalten alle Beiträge des vergangenen „DU-Jahres“. Hintergedanke bei der Erstellung dieser Zusammenfassung war dabei nicht allein, allen Interessierten kurzweiligen Lesesto zu bieten. Examined by Dr Shawn Sobers (internal examiner), Dr Aphra Kerr (external examiner) and Dr Alan Greer (independent chair). 1 Thesis abstract The Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) genre represents one of the most popular, dynamic and influential spaces of digital play. Since the genres first commercial release in 2009 with the title League of Legends (2009 – present, Riot Games), MOBAs have played an integral role in pioneering ‘fair’ models of free-to-play, live streaming as a ubiquitous spectator activity and e-sports as an increasingly recognised mainstream industry. This thesis posits each of these trends as connected to the influence of MOBAs as a genre with a rich history in grassroots spaces of non-commercial play and participation. Adopting an online ethnographic approach, the thesis describes how the transition of the genre away from its non-commercial and collectivised origins has introduced an influential model of hybrid power relations characteristic of the affective economics that underpin many wider digital platforms. Central to this thesis is the introduction of playful co-creativity as a conception for describing the productive role that play and closely related participatory activities exert in the vibrant activities of MOBAs. -

To understand how immersion is implemented into games, immersive details and elements were investigated. Each element of game design is present when discussing immersive details such as environment design, narrative design, character design, and sound design. With all elements working together in detail work, as many human senses are activated as possible, which creates a highly immersive experience. To see how personal immersion is and if it can be measured, a survey and interviews were conducted. Conclusions of both showed that while immersion and how it is seen varies from person to person, there are certain elements in games that players actively notice and appreciate. Other details may go unnoticed but may be observed on an unconscious level.
