The Dears are pleased to announce a string of tour dates in Europe and the UK for 2020. Formed in 1995, The Dears released their first, ultra lo-fi album, End of a Hollywood Bedtime Story, in 2000. The orchestral, dar k pop sound and dramatic live shows cemented The Dears at the foundation of the then-emerging Canadian indie- rock renaissance. In 2001 and 2002, they released two separate concept EPs Orchestral Pop Noir Romantique and Protest, respectively. In 2003 they released their second full-length album No Cities Left in Canada, and a string of highly anticipated shows at SXSW ‘04 prompted the international release of No Cities Left with Bella Union. Gang of Losers came in 2006. In 2008 the group partnered with Dangerbird Records to release Missiles, followed by Degeneration Street (2011), Times Infinity Volume One (2015) and Times Infinity Volume Two (2017). In 2019, Murray A. Lightburn released his solo record, Hear Me Out. The Dears have toured the world over, including performances on Letterman (twofold), Jimmy Kimmel, Jonathan Ross and at Glastonbury, T in the Park, Wireless, Montreal Jazz Fest, Siren Festival, Coachella, Austin City Limits, V Fest, Reading and Leeds, Les Inrocks (France), Montreux Jazz Fest, Istanbul Jazz Fest, Pop Montreal, CMW, NXNE and countless appearances at SXSW. ACTIVITY REPORT 2014-15 10TH ANNIVERSARY PROJECT ELAN celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2014 and received project funding from the Government of Canada through the Department of Canadian Heritage for a number of special activities. The first was to feature trailblazers in building Quebec’s current dynamic English- language arts community from the sparsely populated, marginal scene of the 1970s and 80s. Three panel discussions were presented in collaboration with POP Montreal and Expozine: The Montreal Formula: Thinking outside the box for survival in Montreal arts (POP Montreal) with Albert Nerenberg (host; filmmaker and laughologist), Murray Lightburn (the Dears), Krista Muir (Lederhosen Lucil), and visual artist J.C. Little; Literary Legacies: A Montreal Story (POP Montreal) with host Katia Grubisic (writer and translator), Linda Leith, founder of Blue Metropolis Foundation, and Marianne Ackerman, founder of the bilingual theatre company Theatre 1774 and Rover Arts; and Montreal Blooming: From Backwater to Music Hotbed (Expozine) with Howard Bilerman (legendary Montreal producer, former drummer for Arcade Fire), Kevin Komoda (Rational Youth), Ryhna Thompson (Envision Management), and musician Molly Sweeney. For our 10th anniversary year, ELAN co-produced Schmoozers with partners from each of the major artistic disciplines: April in collaboration with the Quebec Writers' Federation; June in collaboration with the St-Ambroise Montreal International Fringe Festival; October in collaboration with the Montreal Film Group; and December at McGill's Schulich School of Music, with a focus on students. Eastern Bloc was selected as the venue for ELAN's 10th anniversary event because it is a well- equipped visual and media arts centre. A photo retrospective of ELAN's 10-year history was projected on one wall while the Wonderwall, created at three stations where guests were photographed as they arrived, was projected on another.

The Music Distribution Industry in Canada 2006
THE MUSIC DISTRIBUTION INDUSTRY IN CANADA 2006 BY LARRY LEBLANC FEB. 2006 This report has been prepared by Larry LeBlanc for the Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB). The purpose of this document is to provide a profile of the English and French-language components of distribution of the Canadian-owned label and artist sector as well as Canadian artists signed or distributed by multinationals in Canada. The report specifically discusses changes in the music distribution sector in Canada since 1998. As well, such newly emerging factors as the rise of widespread Internet-based downloading; the rise of music subscription services; and the use of ringtones, ringtunes and podcasting in affecting music sales are also discussed. The report indicates that Canadian music retail has become more consolidated and more selective with product choices. Major music retailers carry a different product mix today than a decade ago. There are fewer music CDs, and more film-related DVD and computer game product. Although radio remains a critical vehicle for the Canadian record industry, labels and retailers cite a waning impact of the medium on overall sales. The study is based on a review of existing documentation, secondary research as well as analysis and findings drawn from 11 interviews conducted by Larry LeBlanc, as the principal source of primary research. Music OVERVIEW Canada's small market size, and a sizable support infrastructure is enabling the domestic industry to develop distinct acts for audiences home and abroad. In the past three years, global markets have embraced a new wave of formidable Canadian English-language rock acts including: Arcade Fire, Broken Social Scene, Death From Above 1979, Feist, Stars, the Dears, Alexisonfire, Metric, Bedouin Soundclash, and Hot Hot Heat; as well as such French-language acts as Corneille, and Lynda Lemay.

Volume 6, Issue 3, August 2009 A Stroke of Genius or Copyright Infringement? Mashups and Copyright in Canada * Graham Reynolds Abstract Mashups, songs created by combining pieces of two or more pre-existing sound recordings into one new sound recording, allow anyone with access to a computer and sound editing software to engage with and participate in the (re)creation of culture. Among other purposes, mashups allow individuals to critique artists, to make satirical statements on the nature of pop music or the music industry, to make new works out of existing cultural expression, and to craft homages to favourite artists or works. This article examines the extent to which mashups are permitted by copyright law in Canada. It is structured as follows. First, it will provide an introduction to mashups, defining the term and discussing the popular emergence of mashups. Second, it will examine whether mashups prima facie infringe copyright in Canada. Third, it will look at whether mashups are protected by the fair dealing defence. This article will demonstrate that many mashups created and disseminated in Canada prima facie infringe copyright. Furthermore, a large number of mashups that prima facie infringe copyright will not be protected by the fair dealing defence as it is currently being applied by Canadian courts. The question, therefore, of the extent to which the Canadian Copyright Act should be revised to permit individuals to create and disseminate mashups without infringing copyright merits discussion during Canada’s ongoing process of copyright reform. One possibility for reform is to incorporate a right to create and disseminate transformative works within the Canadian Copyright Act.

BIO // THE DEARS // GANG OF LOSERS // JULY 2006 Available in the U.S. October 3, on Arts & Crafts. Without even seeing a performance by The Dears it was easy to recognize the group in Montreal’s haunts in the late nineties. Dressed in black suits and white shirts, they would descend on bars like the minor legends they were. At that time, The Dears were like an unconfirmed rumour of ardour; they were full of possibility, and propelled by passion, alienation, and alcohol. Their precious name and crooning vocals of charismatic frontman Murray Lightburn, defined their clean, symphonic pop style. Yet the band’s onstage intensity and quiet defiance defied easy categorization. Already, at that early stage, their sophisticated content and attitude set them at odds with the music scene of the day. End of a Hollywood Bedtime Story, their 2000 debut album, immediately established The Dears as a unique and powerful presence. With a stylized and cinematic scope, the record fused narratives, orchestral arrangements and pop in a way that was praised for ambitious grandiosity. The Dears, now Lightburn with keyboardist Natalia Yanchak and joined by drummer George Donoso III and bassist Martin Pelland, exhausted themselves on a seemingly endless schedule of grueling tours. Kids from Sudbury to Vancouver bought tickets and T-shirts and came out from winter’s shadow to experience the band live. They toured more. Band members quit and replacements were found. They endured their initiation into the divided and limited realities of national critical success and kept to themselves. By 2001 The Dears ceased to be a rumour; they were real and dark – almost too real and too dark for a Canadian music scene that banked on fluffy love songs and slick indie hits.
