  • Branding Brussels Musically: Cosmopolitanism and Nationalism in the Interwar Years
BRANDING BRUSSELS MUSICALLY: COSMOPOLITANISM AND NATIONALISM IN THE INTERWAR YEARS Catherine A. Hughes A dissertation submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Music. Chapel Hill 2015 Approved by: Annegret Fauser Mark Evan Bonds Valérie Dufour John L. Nádas Chérie Rivers Ndaliko © 2015 Catherine A. Hughes ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Catherine A. Hughes: Branding Brussels Musically: Cosmopolitanism and Nationalism in the Interwar Years (Under the direction of Annegret Fauser) In Belgium, constructions of musical life in Brussels between the World Wars varied widely: some viewed the city as a major musical center, and others framed the city as a peripheral space to its larger neighbors. Both views, however, based the city’s identity on an intense interest in new foreign music, with works by Belgian composers taking a secondary importance. This modern and cosmopolitan concept of cultural achievement offered an alternative to the more traditional model of national identity as being built solely on creations by native artists sharing local traditions. Such a model eluded a country with competing ethnic groups: the Francophone Walloons in the south and the Flemish in the north. Openness to a wide variety of music became a hallmark of the capital’s cultural identity. As a result, the forces of Belgian cultural identity, patriotism, internationalism, interest in foreign culture, and conflicting views of modern music complicated the construction of Belgian cultural identity through music. By focusing on the work of the four central people in the network of organizers, patrons, and performers that sustained the art music culture in the Belgian capital, this dissertation challenges assumptions about construction of musical culture.

  • Regards Sur Les Compositeurs Tourangeaux
ABSTRACT Here we are interested in dealing with six composers who were noted for composing French songs. Two were born in Touraine, Charles Bordes and René de Buxeuil, two lived there for a time, Emmanuel Chabrier and Francis Poulenc, and two live there presently, Henri Dutilleux and Jack Ledru. • Cohesion of Composer and Singer: the Female Singers of Poulenc
COHESION OF COMPOSER AND SINGER: THE FEMALE SINGERS OF POULENC DOCUMENT Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Susan Joanne Musselman, B.M., M.M. ***** The Ohio State University 2007 Document Committee: J. Robin Rice, Adviser Approved by: Hilary Apfelstadt Wayne Redenbarger ________________________ Adviser Graduate Program in Music Copyright by Susan Joanne Musselman 2007 ABSTRACT Every artist’s works spring from an aspiring catalyst. One’s muses can range from a beloved city to a spectacular piece of music, or even a favorite time of year. Francis Poulenc’s inspiration for song-writing came from the high level of intimacy he had with his close friends. They provided the stimulation and encouragement needed for a lifetime of composition. There is a substantial amount of information about Francis Poulenc’s life and works available. We are fortunate to have access to his own writings, including a diary of his songs, an in-depth interview with a close friend, and a large collection of his correspondence with friends, fellow composers, and his singers. It is through these documents that we not only glean knowledge of this great composer, but also catch a glimpse of the musical accuracy Poulenc so desired in the performance of his songs. A certain amount of scandal surrounded Poulenc during his lifetime and even well after his passing. Many rumors existed involving his homosexuality and his relationships with other male musicians, as well as the possible fathering of a daughter. The primary goal of this document is not to unearth any hidden innuendos regarding his personal life, however, but to humanize the relationships that Poulenc had with so many of his singers.

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 Abstract The musical life of interwar France (1919-39) has fascinated many writers; however, the part played by women musicians has been much neglected. This thesis seeks to rectify this situation by presenting a study of the activities and reception of the musiciennes of interwar France. The thesis is divided into three parts: part one provides a contextual framework within which to situate the pursuits of women musicians by considering both their contemporary social position and the gender- specific conditions which affect the lives, careers, and reception of musiciennes. Part two focuses on conductors and composers. Jane Evrard and her Orchestre feminin de Paris are discussed within the context of the contemporaneous development of the all woman orchestra and rise of the first professional female conductors.

  • Give a Dog a Bone Some Investigations Into Erik Satie
Give a dog a bone Some investigations into Erik Satie An article by Ornella Volta. Original title: Le rideau se leve sur un os. From Revue International de la Musique Francaise, Vol. 8, No. 23. English translation by Todd Niquette. © 1987: Reprinted and translated with kind permission. Satie said one day to Cocteau: "I want to write a play for dogs, and I already have my set design: the curtain rises on a bone". It often happens with Satie that, amazed by the arresting image he suggests, we forget to dig for meaning beneath the proposal. Such a magic formula - we're happy just to mull it over, even pass it on, to transmit it intact. Why ask ourselves about the details of such a play? About its plot, its dialogue? Why did he go out of his way to describe the set? Unpublished drawing by Jean Sichler (1987) Simply to raise the question touches on the pedantic or superfluous. In a play "for dogs," the bone is at once the content, the set and the plot. The set is the play. It has often been asked why Satie wrote several of his works "for a dog". Some have seen an allusion to Chopin's Valse op. 64, no. 1 nicknamed "little dog's waltz" - or maybe a sly wink at the "Love Songs To My Dog" (Sins of Old Age) by Rossini. Others have seen, perhaps a bit more to the point, a tribute to Diogenes and other Cynics. For us, as we have written elsewhere, the dedication of the Flabby Preludes sends us back, automatically and inevitably, to the prologue of Gargantua, which begins by quoting the same portion of the "Banquet" which Satie would use in his "Portrait de Socrate".

  • The Importance of Private Patronage in the Career of Francis Poulenc
THE IMPORTANCE OF PRIVATE PATRONAGE IN THE CAREER OF FRANCIS POULENC The majority of the material used below is taken from Myriam Chimènes’ work: Mécènes et musiciens - Du salon au concert à Paris sous la IIIe République 1. Any additional material and further detail which might be required can be easily found there 2. The private institutions have been dealt with only in relation to the career of one composer, Francis Poulenc. POULENC’S USE OF PATRONAGE At just the right time, Francis Poulenc found himself at the meeting point of two closely related worlds in the period between the 1920s and the end of the Second World War.1He had2neither Debussy’s mistrust nor Maurice Ravel’s caution regarding the salons: in fact, his family background and the type of education which he had received allowed him to slip easily into the whirl of salon life. His background on his father’s side was typically that of the industrial, entrepreneurial middle classes: enterprising, active and relatively well-off. His grandfather Poulenc, from the Aveyron, was one of the founders of the industrial giant known today as Rhône-Poulenc. But Francis’ father was less interested in the company than his brothers and gave relatively little of himself to the business, either personally or financially, so that his family, although comfortably off, would not have been considered extremely wealthy. It might be said, then, that Francis Poulenc gained less materially from his family, but had exceptionally rich opportunities to mix, from an early age, with notable people and groups who could be described as privileged.

CATALOGUE OF COMPOSITIONS COMPILED BY MADELEINE MILHAUD FROM THE COMPOSER'S NOTEBOOKS AND REVISED BY JANE HOHFELD GALANTE The translator owes a debt of gratitude to Mme. Milhaud for the many hours of assistance, helpful counsel, and gracious hospitality she contributed to the revision of this catalogue. Very special appreciation is also due toR. Wood Massi for his extensive work in verifying and re-ordering data pertaining to the music, to Jean-Franfois Denis for his excellently detailed preparation of the final copy, and to Dr. Katharine M. Warne for her constructive perusal of the proofs and her many invaluable suggestions. I should like to thank the Mills College Department ofMusic for providing research funds and the Mills College Library for giving me unlimited access to the Milhaud collection. I am especially grateful to Eva Konrad Kreshka for her unstinting encouragement and enthusiasm. The careful reader will note some discrepancies between this catalogue, which is based on Milhaud's notebooks, and the printed scores, mostly in regard to exact dates, places ofcomposition, and timing. In the majority of instances, the notebook entry is the one used except where information given on the score adds something ofspecial interest. !.H. G.
