Copyright CSIRO Leaves pedately compound or pedately lobed. Leaflet blades up to 30 x 11 cm, leaflet stalks usually absent. Compound leaf petioles up to 50 cm long, the winged, i.e. basal, section up to 25 cm long. Petioles produce a milky exudate when cut. Intramarginal vein usually well inside the leaflet blade margin, more so on one side than the other. Flowers Up to 8 inflorescences produced in a leaf axil. Flowers produced in a spike, male flowers on the upper part, female flowers on the lower part of the spike. Male section of the spike about 4.5 cm long, female section about 2 cm long. Spathe enveloping the inflorescence, lower part of the spathe green, upper part cream. Spathe constricted between the two zones. Stigma capitate, finely hairy. Fruit Fruit. Copyright CSIRO Fruits about 4-5 x 2-3 cm, enclosed in the lower part of the persistent spathe. Spathe pink to red, about 6-7 cm long on a stalk about 17 cm long. Seeds about 5 x 3 mm, each seed enclosed in a thin sarcotesta? The whole embryo appears to be composed of a cotyledon? Seedlings One pale sheath-like cataphyll. One leaf-like cataphyll produced before the first true leaf. First leaf triangularly cordate, small oil dots visible with a lens. At the tenth leaf stage: compound leaves mostly pedate, lateral leaflets often with one lateral lobe. Leaflets sessile, elliptic, apex acuminate. Midrib depressed on the upper surface. Two intramarginal veins visible on each leaflet, the inner one more obvious than the outer one. Compound leaf petioles winged, the wings forming a narrow sheath on the upper Habit. Distribution and Ecology An introduced species originally from central or South America, now naturalised in NEQ and CEQ. Altitudinal range quite small, from near sea level to about 50 m. Grows in lowland rain forest and gallery forest. Natural History & Notes This plant contains crystals of calcium oxalate and is poisonous. If eaten it causes burning of the lips and mouth. Meenakshi Vaidya S.V.K.M’s Mithibai College, Vile-Parle West, Mumbai 400056 ABSTRACT Araceae, a tropical family consisting of 109 genera and about 2,239 species. Plants are mostly herbaceous, habit rarely aquatic. Rootstock is rhizomatous or tuberous or cornous. Leaves are simple or compound, parallel or net veined. Laticifers are common. Silica bodies lacking, oxalate raphides present. Inflorescence is simple spadix with a spathe. Flowers are minute, sessile bisexual or more commonly unisexual with reduced perianth or without perianth. Stamens are six in a flower. Carpels are three, syncarpous. Ovules one - many on axile or parietal or basal or peudulous placenta. Fruit is berry. There are several genera belonging to Araceae whose taxonomic position is not clear. Stomata in Dieffenbachia, Scindapsus, Arisaema, Lysichiton and few species of Araceae stated that family is characterised by possession of 4 or more than 4 subsidiary cells in majority of its members representing the primitive status of the family within monocotyledons. So, stomatal complexes study in two genera and 11 species was undertaken in the present work to understand the taxonomic position of these members of Araceae and also to determine taxonomic utility of anatomical characters. Gilman2 Introduction This rapidly-growing evergreen vine produces a multitude of variegated, bright green, arrow-shaped leaves on climbing and trailing stems (Fig. 1). If allowed to climb, Nephthytis develops large tropical leaves and wrist-thick stems. When kept from climbing, it quickly provides a green mat of six-inch high foliage, creating an excellent groundcover. It can become weedy, much the same as English ivy does, and will require regular trimming along the edges of the bed. It will also grow up into shrubs and look messy so it is best located in front of a shrub area, or out by itself in the landscape. Ortiz, [email protected] SUMMARY The aroid flora in Panama includes 436 described species in 26 genera, representing the richest country of Araceae in Central America. Much of the existing knowledge of the Panamanian aroids has been generated in the last 50 years, mainly due to extensive taxonomic studies and, to a lesser extent, by floristic studies. Floristic studies generated valuable information to better understand biodiversity, especially in the poorly- explored areas. For this reason, the main objective of this work is to study the floristic composition of the aroids of a botanically important region: Cerro Pirre (Darién Province). As a result, 430 specimens were Scientia, Vol. 28, N° 2 61 studied, comprising 94 species in 12 genera. The Aroid flora of Cerro Pirre is formed by species of wide geographic distribution (53%) and, to a lesser extent, endemic species (27%). Of the total species, approximately 43% are nomadic vines, 33% epiphytes, 23% terrestrial and a single species epilithic (1%). Ten new records for the flora of Cerro Pirre were recorded and one new record for Panama.

Fertility General Rule - One teaspoon soluble house plant fertilizer per gallon of water or follow recommendations on package. Low - No application in winter or during dormant periods. Medium - Apply every other month during winter and every month during spring and summer. High - Apply every month during winter and twice each month during the spring and summer.

CROAT1' 2 ABSTRACT Thirty-three species are recognized for Syngonium in this first published revision since that of Engler and Krause in 1920. Syngonium (now including Porphyrospatha) is the only member of the tribe Syngonieae (Araceae). The genus includes 4 newly described sections, sect. Oblongatum Croat, sect. Cordatum Croat, sect. Pinnatilobum Croat, and sect. Syngonium Croat, defined by leaf mor- phology, namely by blades basically oblong, cordate, pinnately lobed, and pedately lobed, respec- tively.
