Alfieri, Jr. Syngonium, commonly known as Nephthytis, is grown as a very popular foliage ornamental. Varieties vary in leaf form and variegation. In Florida it ranks fourth in economic importance in the foliage ornamental industry. The fungus Cephalosporium cinnamomeum Linn is the causal agent of the leaf spot on Syn- gonium podophyllum Schott. This disease was first reported by Linn (2) in 1940. The incidence of leaf spot of Syngonium varies with the varieties grown and the cultural conditions of propagation. 'Emerald Gem' is most susceptible, ‘Green Gold’ moderately susceptible, and 'Cream Giant' least susceptible (1). SYMPTOMS. The leaf spots appear as very tiny, circular to slightly irregular, reddish brown lesions with a conspicuous yellow border (Fig. 1). The spots enlarge slowly and seldom reach a diameter of more than 3-4 mm. The youngest leaves are the most susceptible and initial infection begins with these leaves. Rarely, if ever, do older mature leaves become infected. Hence, spots seen on older leaves begin when the leaves are young. Fig. 1. Plants are mostly herbaceous, habit rarely aquatic. Rootstock is rhizomatous or tuberous or cornous. Leaves are simple or compound, parallel or net veined. Laticifers are common. Silica bodies lacking, oxalate raphides present. Inflorescence is simple spadix with a spathe. Flowers are minute, sessile bisexual or more commonly unisexual with reduced perianth or without perianth. Stamens are six in a flower. Carpels are three, syncarpous. Ovules one - many on axile or parietal or basal or peudulous placenta. Fruit is berry. There are several genera belonging to Araceae whose taxonomic position is not clear. Stomata in Dieffenbachia, Scindapsus, Arisaema, Lysichiton and few species of Araceae stated that family is characterised by possession of 4 or more than 4 subsidiary cells in majority of its members representing the primitive status of the family within monocotyledons. So, stomatal complexes study in two genera and 11 species was undertaken in the present work to understand the taxonomic position of these members of Araceae and also to determine taxonomic utility of anatomical characters. Gilman2 Introduction This rapidly-growing evergreen vine produces a multitude of variegated, bright green, arrow-shaped leaves on climbing and trailing stems (Fig. 1). If allowed to climb, Nephthytis develops large tropical leaves and wrist-thick stems. When kept from climbing, it quickly provides a green mat of six-inch high foliage, creating an excellent groundcover. It can become weedy, much the same as English ivy does, and will require regular trimming along the edges of the bed. It will also grow up into shrubs and look messy so it is best located in front of a shrub area, or out by itself in the landscape. Ortiz, [email protected] SUMMARY The aroid flora in Panama includes 436 described species in 26 genera, representing the richest country of Araceae in Central America. Much of the existing knowledge of the Panamanian aroids has been generated in the last 50 years, mainly due to extensive taxonomic studies and, to a lesser extent, by floristic studies. Floristic studies generated valuable information to better understand biodiversity, especially in the poorly- explored areas. For this reason, the main objective of this work is to study the floristic composition of the aroids of a botanically important region: Cerro Pirre (Darién Province). As a result, 430 specimens were Scientia, Vol. 28, N° 2 61 studied, comprising 94 species in 12 genera. The Aroid flora of Cerro Pirre is formed by species of wide geographic distribution (53%) and, to a lesser extent, endemic species (27%). Of the total species, approximately 43% are nomadic vines, 33% epiphytes, 23% terrestrial and a single species epilithic (1%). Ten new records for the flora of Cerro Pirre were recorded and one new record for Panama.

Terrariums were popularized in the 19th century when a London surgeon, Dr. Daniel Ward, accidently created a garden in a jar. A natural history hobbyist, Dr. Ward wanted to see an adult sphinx moth hatch from a chrysalis. He buried the cocoon in damp soil in a glass jar and covered the jar with a metal lid. Some grass and a fern sprouted from the soil, and Dr. Ward lost interest in the cocoon. The plants thrived in the jar without additional water and no influx of fresh air. After four years, while Dr. Ward was absent from his home, the metal lid rusted and rain entered the jar causing the plants to rot. In 1832, Dr. Ward decided to ship some glass-contained plants to Sydney, Australia, by way of Cape Good Hope. The containers of ferns and grasses, lashed to the ship’s deck during the eight-month voyage, arrived intact and healthy. Dr. Ward’s Australian colleagues returned the glass containers to London with equal success. After Dr. Ward published his findings the glass-contained planters became known as Wardian cases. The development of Wardian cases opened up intercontinental plant trade. Indian teas, Chinese bananas and Brazilian rubber trees were introduced in compatible climates around the world. Exotic, tropical plants became available in Europe and America. Dr. Ward’s efforts provided a global selection of plant material for the indoor gardener, and an effective method for maintaining delicate plant species.

This list contains information on how large the plant will get at maturity, which light level is best for good growth, how much you should be feeding your indoor plants and how much water is required for healthy growth. The list gives the scientific name and, in parenthesis, the common name. Always try to remember a plant by its scientific name, because some plants have many common names but only one scientific name. The following descriptions define the terms used in the following material. Light Levels Low - Minimum high level of 25-foot candles, preferred level of 75- to 200-foot candles. Medium - Minimum of 75- to 100-foot candles, preferred level of 200- to 500-foot candles. High - Minimum of 200-foot candles, preferred level of 500- to 1,000-foot candles.
