MAXI-PITCHES TAKE CENTRE SPOT IN GRASSROOTS FOOTBALL

Munich illustrates how maxi-pitches benefit both local football and the community. UEFA donates maxi-pitches to each host city of a UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League final. The tradition started in 2010, to kick off UEFA’s Grassroots Week.

The goal of the maxi-pitches is to develop football at grassroots level and to enable more boys and girls to experience the passion and fun of football. It also highlights UEFA’s con tinued commitment to the foundations of the game, while also conveying the message that elite football can only thrive with a healthy base beneath it and that the game should be open to all players of all ages and abilities. In the recent years UEFA has donated nine maxi-pitches, to cities including Dublin, London, Amsterdam, Lisbon, Turin, Bucharest, Madrid and Munich.

‘Football is not 1-0. Football is happiness’ In conjunction with this year’s UEFA Women’s Champions League and UEFA Champions League final in Berlin, UEFA visited the maxi-pitch in Munich that it had donated for the 2012 showpiece, the fourth hosted by the Bavarian city.
