The Nottingham Knight Writer 1st Grade Dr. Seuss Book Reviews 2016-2017

March 2017

Dear Readers,

The Nottingham Writing Exemplary Project marries rigorous curriculum work with student engagement. This year is more critical than ever because Arlington County rolled out a new writing curriculum, The Lucy Calkins Writing Workshop. The Exemplary Project provides professional development to Nottingham’s talented staff. However, student work is the Exemplary Project’s lifeblood. Thoughtful exercises motivate student writing, such as the Writing Quests, The Knight Writer, specific contests, conferencing with students, and other initiatives.

The Exemplary Project and the First Grade team collaborated to create this book in honor of Dr. Seuss. His birthday on March 2nd inspired National Read Across America Day, and now you have something new to read! First graders thought of their favorite Dr. Seuss book (not an easy task!) and used the skills they’ve been learning in their Opinion Writing Unit to support their book choice. We hope you like their pieces!

As you read, please remember this is student work. Imperfections are part of the process and our goal is to celebrate the growth and development of young writers. The ability to communicate thoughts and ideas through writing is an essential skill. Kindergarteners also communicate through illustrations that add detail to their stories. Please join us in applauding our Knights’ efforts, and encouraging them to reach their full potential.

Many thanks for the PTA for their generous support of The Knight Writer!

Write on!

Sam: I think is a great book because the sun did not shine. Once that happened to me and my brother, and my mom was out too. And in the book their mom was out for the day.

Olivia: I think is an awesome book because it’s a rhyming book. It says you should try things before you say you don’t like them. It’s good for beginning readers. It has my friend’s name, Sam!

Ms. Costa’s Pastas

Alyce: I like the book . It rhymes. On page eight and nine it says, “All tall. We all are tall. All small. We all are small.” This is my favorite book.

Sully: I think Go Dog Go is an awesome book! This is because it makes me feel like I am in the car. And it can teach you to be polite. And it is a fun book.

Ms. Costa’s Pastas

Audrey: I think by Dr. Seuss is a good book. It teaches people that business is not everything. The animals are really fun! The sentence, “From the rippulous pond came the comfortable sound of humming-Fish humming while splashing around.” It’s a fun sentence! One time I was with my sister at the pool and we made up fun songs! I didn’t think it was nice that they quickly chopped down the trees. It is a funny book for anyone really. It has some sentences that rhyme which is really fun! The Lorax is a small creature that speaks for the trees. I hope you read this book soon.

Fiona: I think Hop on Pop is terrific. I think that page seven is really funny because a mouse is carrying a house. I think Hop on Pop is a great book because Hop on Pop has rhyming words. I think Hop on Pop is a successful book. One page says, “Wet get, two dogs get wet. Help yelp. They yelp for help.” That is why I like Hop on Pop!

Ms. Costa’s Pastas

Layne: The Cat in the Hat Comes Back is funny because the Cat in the Hat is...crazy!!! There’s a Cat A and Cat B and Cat C. The Cat in the Hat and his cats make a big mess! And there’s all of this pink ink! How would you feel if the Cat in the Hat came back?

Spencer: I think that Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are? is a great book! On one page they say you’re luckier than some people. I thought it was funny because one page had some one’s pants getting sucked up by “perilous pants-eating plants.” We are lucky because our pants don’t get sucked up.

Ms. Costa’s Pastas

Mashal: The Sneetches is an excellent book because it teaches you a lesson to never argue who is the best. When the Sneetches get mixed up it is funny. I think all Dr. Seuss books are excellent because he makes up silly characters.

Daniel:The Sneetches is one of my favorite Dr. Seuss books because it is super funny. And it has other stories in it. One lesson I learned is that you shouldn’t judge how people look. And the walking pants are very funny. The walking pants become..friends with the little boy!

Ms. Costa’s Pastas

Ella: I think Green Eggs and Ham is a terrific book because Sam-I-Am is trying to make the person eat green eggs and ham. A lesson is that if you don’t try it you won’t know if you will like it. Sam-I-Am asks the person would you like it in all places. Finally, they are on a boat and it tips over the person tries it and likes it.

Evie: I think the book GREAT DAY FOR UP by Dr. Seuss is an awesome book!!! It is always going to rhyme. That is what one of the things I like about this book. The other two things are...Dr. Seuss has very good pictures!!! The third is...he adds new words! And the words are funny. And all of his books end with a happily ever after. And he makes the words three or four letters long. There are so many characters!!! There are so many books in the WORLD!!

Ms. Costa’s Pastas

Ryuma: My favorite Dr. Seuss book is Hop on Pop because it is funny. For example, one page says, “Where is Brown? There is Brown. Mr Brown is out of town!” Mr. Brown flies from a seesaw. I also like the part that says, “Night Fight. We fight all night” because there’s no door to get out of the room. I think you should read this book because it’s pretty easy to read.

Gabby: I Think That I Can Read with My Eyes Shut is a great book because...it is a very funny book because one of the characters is Foo Foo the Snoo and it says, “Fish bones and wishbones” which is also funny. It is a very cool and funny and fun book.

Ms. Costa’s Pastas

Jackson: I like Wish for a Fish because I like sea creatures. But this one can dive and then stay way down there for two hours or move at three thousand feet. It squirts out ink in some enemy’s face and then swims away to a much safer space. It is called The Great White for its white belly, great teeth and great big deep bite!

Elias: Would you Rather Be a Bullfrog? is a super book! It has so many questions to answer. Like would you be a...clarinet or a trombone or a drum?

Ms. Costa’s Pastas

Will: My favorite Dr. Seuss book is Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are? because it is funny. I sometimes read Dr. Seuss. Dr. Seuss books are kind of hard.

Philimon: I think is a stupendous book. It is a funny book. The part that is funny is when chicks with bricks come. Fox was trying to get Knox’s tongue in trouble. There is a fox and foxes are my favorite animal. There are two made up characters and they are funny.

Ms. Costa’s Pastas

Giovanna: The lessons I learned from Cat in the Hat is that it always rhymes and Dr. Seuss writes funny books that are fun to read.

John: I think Green Eggs and Ham is a bad book. I don’t like how Sam I Am is always trying to get the other guy to eat green eggs and ham. I also don’t like that he tries to tell him what to eat and who to eat with. I don’t suggest you read Green Eggs and Ham.

Duc: Did I Ever Tell you How Lucky you Are? is a silly book because on one of the pages it is funny because a tree pulls a guy’s pants down.

Ms. Costa’s Pastas

Ms. Grey’s Penguins

Ms. Gray’s Penguins

Leah: Oh the Places You’ll Go is so so so so good because it has lots of good quotes. Here are some of them. One page says, “Wherever you go you will be best of the best.” There is also a good lesson in the story. The lesson is you can do anything but it might take some work. And it is a silly story. One of the silly things is the...Waiting Place! The Waiting Place is where people wait. They wait for anything, they wait for the train, “They wait for the fish to bite or waiting for the wind to fly a kite.” Or they wait for their hair to grow. All sorts of silly things! But the Waiting Place is also a very useless place.

Declan: I think Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss is a funny book because it takes place in funny places. And there are really funny and loud parts. And at the end it’s the best. And I think the lesson in the book is always try new food. I think for young kids it might teach some new places. And I like eggs, but I haven’t tried green ones. “Would you eat them in a box? Would you eat them with a fox?” The rhyming words are funny. I think this part is funny,” I could not, would not on a boat. I will not, will not with a goat.” Just like the time I did not want to eat a tomato. But when I tried it, it was juicy and sweet and now I really like tomatoes. It is my favorite Dr. Seuss book but I like others too. I hope you can read Green Eggs and Ham soon.

Ms. Gray’s Penguins

Lauren: is funny because all the words rhyme. Here’s one of the rhymes, “up feet down feet here comes clown feet.” I also like The Foot Book because they’re made up characters. And all the made up characters have wacky looking feet. And I noticed that it was the opposite type of feet, like wet feet dry feet. Not all of them were like that but most of them were. The ones that weren’t were rhyming like, “quick feet, sick feet.”

Ellen: My favorite Dr. Seuss book is Marvin K. Mooney Will You Please Go Now! because of the pretty colors and funny words. Dr. Seuss is creative. “I said go and go I meant,” is something Dr. Seuss wrote.

Ms. Gray’s Penguins

Michael: My favorite Dr. Seuss book is Green Eggs and Ham because it’s a great book. I like Green Eggs and Ham. One reason I like the book is because I’ve eaten green eggs and ham.

Jackson: I think you should read The Lorax because in the book it teaches not to pollute and encourage. For example, when your family is discouraged you can encourage them. And it teaches you to help the environment and that is why I think you should read it.

Ms. Gray’s Penguins

Katherine: My favorite Dr. Seuss book is The Cat in the Hat because it is funny. One reason is because he rides on a dress. Another reason is because he puts gum on a shoe.

Adin: My favorite Dr. Seuss book is because it is funny. In the book the plane lands on the road. And the cover of the book has a shoe flying.

Ms. Gray’s Penguins

Mason: I think Green Eggs and Ham is interesting because it teaches you a lesson, you should try things you think you don’t like and you might like it. So I thought I didn’t like spinach but I actually do. In Green Eggs and Ham Sam I Am says, “Do you like green eggs and ham?” He says no! But at the end he says, “I like green eggs and ham.” So the next time you think you don’t like something just try it because it might be something good actually and if you don’t try it, you might not know if you might like it. It might be really good so just try it.

Chris: I think Hop on Pop is magnificent because there’s lots of silly things. And they make some rhyming words, then use them in sentences. And they show different short scenes. My favorite part about it is when pup was in the air and brown was down under. Then pup was down and brown was flying above. Finally, brown came back with black.

Ms. Gray’s Penguins

Jake: I think Great Day for Up is funny. It’s like everything is up. My favorite part of the book is, “Up up up great day for up. Wake every person, pig, and pup till EVERYONE on Earth is up!” Everyone is playing outside with toys and the birds are singing. People are ready for work. Because I really like how whenever the sun comes up they wake up.

Iñaki: You should read The Cat in the Hat because the Cat comes in and makes a mess. The kids had to clean up before their mother comes home. Then the Cat brings in Thing 1 and Thing 2. Then the Cat cleans up.

Ms. Gray’s Penguins

Hannah: My favorite book is Daisy-Head Mayzie by Dr. Seuss. And it is my favorite because Daisy lives in room 8. And my very favorite part is when Daisy said, “A daisy was sprouting right out of her hair!” And I like when “Miss Sheetcher the teacher came rushing up quick.” And I also like when Miss Sheetcher said, “such nonsense.” But I don’t like the sad part when Daisy loses her daisy. And it was funny when Miss Sheetcher tries to pull Daisy’s flower off. But I kind of don’t like it when the class said, “Daisy-Head! Daisy-Head! Daisy-Head Mayzie!”

Kanav: My favorite book is because there is a lot of fighting. The book is about a battle between two people. The people are fighting about whether to put the butter side up or side down. Every time the side of butter side up had bad tools, the team came up with something new. But the other side had the same thing or something better. That side’s person, Van Itch, always started talking over the wall how he would win. The last thing the two sides came up with was a pink ball and it was very cool. You’ll have to read it to find out what happens with the ball. I like the book The Butter Battle, it’s very cool.

Ms. Gray’s Penguins

Hayden: I think There’s a Wocket in My Pocket by Dr. Seuss is an amazing book. It’s about little and big things in the boy’s house. Some things are friendly, some are not. One page says, ‘But that Bofa on the sofa...well I wish he wasn’t there.” The words are funny. And the pictures are funny too. On one page it says, “But the yeps on the steps-they’re great to have around and so are many many other friends that I have found.” And so I give it two thumbs up.

Jensen:Wacky Wednesday is my favorite book by Dr. Seuss because first there was a shoe on the wall. And then two shoes were on the wall. There was a tree in a toilet. And there was a fish in the soap. There was a draft in the sewer and a stroller on a car and a shoe on a cloud.

Ms. Gray’s Penguins

Joel: Fox in Socks is funny to read and it is my favorite Dr. Seuss book. It is silly and funny, very silly and funny. It is 62 pages with silly pictures. The characters are silly and funny too, like the fox. His name is Mr. Knox Sir. The last page says, “Now is your tongue numb.”

Sophia: How The Stole Christmas is an amazing book by Dr. Seuss. The Grinch is trying to steal Christmas. When Cindy Lou says, “Santy Claus why why are you taking our Christmas tree?” She is very worried. I think it is good to know to never judge anything. When the Grinch says, “There is a light on this tree that won’t light on one side,” he was lying. The end is good too.

Ms. Gray’s Penguins

Avaani: I think Green Eggs and Ham! by Dr. Seuss is an awesome book because you learn a lesson that sometimes you don’t like something and you try it and it’s good so then you eat it a lot. For example, I didn’t like eggs at first but then I tried them and I liked them. One of the pages says, “Sam! If you let me be, I will try them you will see.” I eat eggs with my family too. I feel like I eat eggs a lot! The book is really about trying for Sam to eat eggs everywhere. The boy sees if he’ll like it with a fox, in a box, with a goat and in the dark and in the rain and on a train and on a boat.

Rohan: My favorite book is Cat in the Hat. “The sun did not shine. It was too wet to play so we sat in the house all that cold, cold, wet day.” It reminds me of winter and spring. “I sat there with Sally” it was raining that’s why they sat together. “Then we saw him step in on the mat.” It was the Cat in the Hat who came in. He wants to play inside and brings a red box. In the box there’s Thing 1 and Thing 2. They like to fly kites. The boy is trying to get Thing 1 and Thing 2. Then the Cat in the Hat came back. He was back with a car who puts all the things away.

Ms. Gray’s Penguins

Bianca: I like Wacky Wednesday because I like when the tree was in the toilet. And then when she began to dress there were four more things that were wacky, it was so crazy! I laughed so hard I almost cried! It is so funny to me. And then when she was done dressing, she went in the kitchen. There were five more things that were wacky. And then when she went outside and she was late for school. When she went to school there were nine things that were wacky. It was so wacky now. And then her teacher said there is nothing wacky in my class and she said get out! There were ten things wacky and then eleven! And she got scared and ran and ran and ran. She knocked over Patrolman McGann and she said I’m sorry Patrolman that’s all I could say. And he said, ‘“Don’t be sorry. It’s that kind of day. But be glad it’s Wacky Wednesday will soon go away. Only twenty more will be wacky,’ he said. ‘Just find them,’ he said, ‘and then you can go back to bed.’” Wacky Wednesday was gone.
