The Story of the Colorado Outward Bound School How the Colorado Outward Bound School came to be. Kurt Hahn was born in 1886 in Berlin, Germany to Jewish parents. When he was nineteen, Hahn suffered a severe sunstroke. His recovery required him to stay inside, in dark conditions for a year and avoid sun and heat for the rest of his life. During this time, Hahn developed an idea for a new kind of school that would focus on nurturing personal responsibility, kindness, and justice. Hahn identified six declines that he felt were the fall of modern youth: 1. Decline of Fitness due to modern methods of locomotion/activity 2. Decline of Initiative and Enterprise due to the widespread disease of spectatoritis (excessive indulgence in forms of amusement in which one is a passive spectator rather than an active participant) 3. Decline of Memory and Imagination due to the confused restlessness of modern life 4. Decline of Skill and Care due to the weakened tradition of craftsmanship 5. Decline of Self-Discipline due to the ever-present availability of stimulants and tranquilizers 6. Decline of Compassion due to the unseemly haste with which modern life is conducted or “spiritual death” In response to these declines, Hahn also came up with four solutions to combat these declines. 1. Fitness Training – to compete with one’s self in physical fitness; in doing so, train the discipline and determination of the mind through the body 2. Expeditions – to engage in long, challenging endurance tasks 3. Projects – involving crafts and manual skills 4. Rescue Service – first aid, fire-fighting, etc. -

Your Disability is Your Opportunity: A historical study of Kurt Hahn focusing on the early development of outdoor activities. Nicholas James Veevers DISSERTATION PRESENTED IN PART FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF SCIENCE IN OUTDOOR EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH MORAY HOUSE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION (2006) This dissertation is dedicated to the most honourable man I have ever met, my father, Jim Veevers, who died after a long illness during its construction. To him I owe my love of the outdoors. “Because I had the opportunities he did not” ABSTRACT It appears that Kurt Hahn (1886 – 1974) did not produce a specific piece of work which traced, in detail, his development of outdoor activities. Research indicated that, although there have been studies examining his educational theory as a whole, there have been no detailed studies which have specifically investigated Hahn’s development of outdoor activities in an historical context. As Hahn was one of the field’s greatest advocates, a historical study, tracing his development of outdoor activities, was needed to document these events. The aim was to provide the most in-depth historical account possible (up to, and including the 1944 Education Act) and so provide a clearer version of events than existed previously. The research used an inductive approach based on primary data (documents, interviews, correspondence) which was processed using thematic analysis. These findings show that Hahn’s development of outdoor activities is much more complicated than the often quoted fact of him being one of the founders of Outward Bound in 1941. For an accurate understanding of Hahn’s contribution to the outdoor experiential education field this should be recognised. -

The other springs from the invisible center within a life; it moves outward from a moment of self- discovery, which knows no beginning and no end, suffusing one's whole existence, and others beyond it, with the meaning of experience. In the first, the chronicle of a life, sequence is crucial. Time and place, the context of growth, an ability to capitalize on circumstance - these are the stuff of life histories when seen as linear progression. Victory comes in leaps and bounds of clever adaptation, the string of successes and compromises through which one creates for oneself a place in the world. The academic year opened with the arrival of eleven new Fellows, reducing the average age of the Fellowship, correcting the gender balance, and covering a wide range of College Reports nationalities from Macedonian to Australian. Academic subjects ranged from law through philosophy, theology and English literature to biolog- ical sciences and physics. Regardless of subject and origin, they very soon became part of the community of Trinity Hall, which has always been so inclusive and welcoming. It was also a year for departure, with the retirement of two of our most senior and long-serving Fellows. Colin Austin arrived in 1965 as a Junior Research Fellow, and retired as Professor of Greek, a pre-eminent author- ity on Greek comedy, and of course our wine steward for 35 years. -

KURT HAHN 1886 – 1974 I regard it as the foremost task of education to insure survival of these qualities: an enterprising curiosity, an undefeatable spirit, tenacity in pursuit, readiness for sensible self-denial, and above all, compassion ( www.KurtHahn.org) Kurt Hahn was born in Germany to Jewish parents and became critical of contemporary education early in his life. Educated in classical philosophy at Berlin, Heidelberg, Freiburg, Göttingen and Oxford he committed his life to education for character formation, learning through experience and citizenship training. Despite studying in various institutions Hahn never completed a degree or education beyond secondary schooling. Most educational thinkers of Hahn’s stature leave writings as their legacy but Hahn wrote very little outside of sermons and newspaper articles. Rather he left a legacy of organisations that he either founded or were indirectly inspired by his philosophy. His early life was complex given the political landscape of early twentieth- century Germany. During the First World War he worked for the German foreign office interpreting the British Press, and he later became the private secretary to Prince Max of Baden (the last imperial chancellor of Germany). In 1920 they co-founded a school in Salem with Hahn as the headmaster. It was here that many of his educational ideas were first implemented and later developed and evolved through various organisations. Salem was run on seven laws which Hahn set out and he believed the value was in their combination: 1. Give children the opportunity for self-discovery 2. -

They had one son: John. 2-John Sims1 was born in 1655 in Swingfield, Kent and died in 1735 in Canterbury, Kent at age 80. Noted events in his life were: • He worked as a Linen draper & Grocer of Canterbury. John married Mary Laggett1 on 2 Mar 1682 in Nonington, Kent. Mary died on 15 Jan 1709 in Canterbury, Kent and was buried in FBG Dunstans, Canterbury. They had ten children: Henry, Susanna, Mary, John, Grace, Stephen, Ann, William, Thomas, and Amy.
