BJARKMAN El béisbol is the Monroe Doctrine turned into a lineup card, a remembrance of past invasions. – John Krich from El Béisbol: Travels Through the Pan-American Pastime (1989) When baseball (the spectacle) is seen restrictively as American baseball, and then when American baseball is seen narrowly as Major League Baseball (MLB), two disparate views will tend to appear. In one case, fans happily accept league expansion, soaring attendance figures, even exciting home run races as evidence that all is well in this best of all possible baseball worlds. In the other case, the same evidence can be seen as mirroring the desperate last flailing of a dying institution – or at least one on the edge of losing any recognizable character as the great American national pastime. Big league baseball’s modern-era television spectacle – featuring overpaid celebrity athletes, rock-concert stadium atmosphere, and the recent plague of steroid abuse – has labored at attracting a new free-spending generation of fans enticed more by notoriety than aesthetics, and consequently it has also succeeded in driving out older generations of devotees once attracted by the sport’s unique pastoral simplicities. Anyone assessing the business health and pop-culture status of the North American version of professional baseball must pay careful attention to the fact that better than forty percent of today’s big league rosters are now filled with athletes who claim their birthright as well as their baseball training or heritage outside of the United States.

BURNELL AND S. BLAIR H EDGES Department of Zoology, University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland 207421 ABSTRACT . – Protein variation in 49 West Indian species of the iguanid lizard genus Anolis was examined by sequential electrophoresis at 12 slow-evolving loci. The use of this technique nearly doubled the total number of alleles detected (121 before, 233 after). Genetic distance and parsimony analyses identified intra-island radiations on Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola, and Puerto Rico, and found little evidence of close inter-island relationships. In most cases, these island radiations (series) defined by protein data were supported by other data (morphology, immunology, chromosomes). No support was obtained for previously defined higher-level groupings (sections and subsections) within the genus. A revised classification is proposed that recognizes 21 series of West Indian Anolis (131 spp.) with distributions centering on the following islands or island groups: Cuba (alutaceus, argillaceous, carolinensis, equestris, lucius, and sagrei), Jamaica (grahami), Hispaniola (chlorocyanus, christophei, cuvieri, cybotes, darlingtoni, distichus, hen- dersoni, monticola, semilineatus, and sheplani), the Puerto Rican Bank (cristatellus, occultus), the northern Lesser Antilles (bimaculatus), and the southern Lesser Antilles (roquet). No categories above the level of series are recognized due to conflicting evidence for higher-level relationships. Although the existence of Anolis on the North Island (Hispaniola) in the Eocene or Oligocene indicates an early arrival of the genus in the West Indies, molecular dating suggests that mid-Tertiary dispersal and not early-Tertiary vicariance best explains the present distribution of the group.

Through the comparison educational systems, statistics of each country’s elite players, and comparative accounts of the Dominican and Cuban player development systems, the contrast between the two systems is evident. Though the Dominican system creates a large return in the investment MLB teams make in the country, the socialized sport system propels Cuba to create the ideal pelotero.

Turner 2012 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT The game of baseball, a shared cultural affinity linking Cuba and the United States, has played a significant part in the relationship between those nations. Having arrived in Cuba as a symbol of growing American influence during the late nineteenth century, baseball would come to reflect the political and economic connections that developed into the 1900s. By the middle of the twentieth century, a significant baseball exchange saw talented Cuban players channeled into Major League Baseball, and American professionals compete in Cuba’s Winter League. The 1959 Cuban Revolution permanently changed this relationship. Baseball’s politicization as a symbol of the Revolution, coupled with political antagonism, an economic embargo, and an end to diplomatic ties between the Washington and Havana governments largely destroyed the U.S.-Cuba baseball exchange. By the end of the 1960s, Cuban and American baseball interactions were limited to a few international amateur competitions, and political hardball nearly ended some of these. During the 1970s, Cold War détente and the success of Ping Pong Diplomacy with China sparked American efforts to use baseball’s common ground as a basis for improving U.S.-Cuba relations.
