Abstract Knowledge of evolutionary relationships or phylogeny allows for effective predictions about the unstudied characteristics of species. These include the presence and biological activity of an organism’s venoms. To date, most venom bioprospecting has focused on snakes, resulting in six stroke and cancer treatment drugs that are nearing U.S. Food and Drug Administration review. Fishes, however, with thousands of venoms, represent an untapped resource of natural products. The first step in- volved in the efficient bioprospecting of these compounds is a phylogeny of venomous fishes. Here, we show the results of such an analysis and provide the first explicit suborder-level phylogeny for spiny-rayed fishes. The results, based on ;1.1 million aligned base pairs, suggest that, in contrast to previous estimates of 200 venomous fishes, .1,200 fishes in 12 clades should be presumed venomous. -

Corresponding author: Suwarni, [email protected] Abstract. Rabit fish (Siganus canaliculatus) is one of the fishery commodities in Indonesian coastal area. These fishes have an economical value, support the coastal community and and are an important protein resource. This study aimed to examine and compare the morphometric characteristics of rabbit fisht that cought from Makassar Strait, Flores Sea, and Bone Gulf waters. 29 morphometric characteristics of rabbit fish were determined from a total of 300 fish samples, from 3 locations, which were 50 male and 50 female fish from each location. Results showed that for the three locations male fish were longer in body length than female fish. In general, there were five morphometric differences of male rabbit fish in the three locations, namely interorbital length, the longest anal soft ray length, orbital width, standard length, and maxilla length. We found that there were seven morphometric characteristics different amongst the female fish from the three locations, such as interorbital length, the longest dorsal spine length, the longest anal spine length, eye width, mouth opening width, and pre-dorsal fin length. The discriminant test showed that there was a high similarity of morphometric characteristics between rabbit fish from Makassar Strait and Flores Sea and a significant difference between the morphometric characteristics of rabbit fish from Bone Gulf and the other two locations. -

Coral reefs support a high diversity of marine organisms, among which rabbitfishes (family Siganidae) are a major component The present study aimed to reveal the mechanism that allows rabbitfishes to coexist on coral reefs in Okinawa, Japan, by investigating the spatial distributions, feeding ecologies, and behavioral interactions of four species: Siganus unimaculatus, S. virgatus, S. corallinus, and S. puellus. All four species had a size-specific spatial distribution, whereby small individuals were found in sheltered areas that were covered by branching and bottlebrush Acropora spp. and large individuals were found in both sheltered and exposed rocky areas. However, no clear species-specific spatial distribution was observed. There was some variation in the food items taken, with S. unimaculatus primarily feeding on brown foliose algae, red foliose algae, and red styloid algae, and S. virgatus and S. puellus preferring brown foliose algae and sponges, respectively. However, S. corallinus did not show any clear differences in food preferences from S. virgatus or S. unimaculatus, mainly feeding on brown foliose algae and red styloid algae. Review known spawning areas for pelagic and invertebrate species, with the aim of evaluating these sites as candidate spawning refugia. 2. Evaluate each of the project’s habitat demonstration sites as potential juvenile/pre-recruit refugia for significant demersal species. Rationale for the Two-Track Approach to the Identification of Fisheries Refugia The two main life history events for fished species are reproduction and recruitment. It was noted by the RSTC that both of these events involve movement between areas, and some species, often pelagic fishes, migrate to particular spawning areas. It was also noted that many species also utilise specific coastal habitats such as coral reefs, seagrass, and mangroves as nursery areas. In terms of the effects of fishing, most populations of fished species are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of high levels of fishing effort in areas and at times where there are high abundances of (a) stock in spawning condition, (b) juveniles and pre-recruits, or (c) pre-recruits migrating to fishing grounds. -

The objective of this study was to determine the trophic structure of reef fishes, as well as the relationship between corallivores and hard corals in the northern part of Kepulauan Seribu. Reef fish species and benthic coverage were assessed using underwater visual census (UVCs) and Line Intercept Transect (LIT). The results showed that there were 120 reef fish species belonging to 7 trophic groups and 19 families. Pomacentridae and Labridae are the most abundant fish families. -

L211 11 252. “Distribution and Composition of Siganidae family fish spesies Based on Different Ecosystem at Laikang Bay, Takalar District, supervised by BASSE SIANG PARAWANSA and SYAMSUL ALAM ALI The purpose of this research is to know the distribution and composition of Siganidae family fish species caught on coral reef ecosystem, seagrass beds an combination of coral reefs and seagrass beds. The research was conducted from April to June 2017, at Laikang Bay of Takalar District. This research was conducted in several stages, preparation, location determination and data retrieval. This research was conducted in several stages namely, preparation, location determination and data retrieval. Baronang fish data were taken using fishing gear and catch information from fisherman while coral and seagrass ecosystem data using Line Intersect Transect and Underwater Visual Census, while for data analysis using diversity index. Based on the results of the research, there were 8 species of 350 (335) baronang family (Siganidae), with the highest species composition found in Siganus guttatus species of 60.31% with 193 species and the lowest was Siganus puellus 0.31% with 1 species. In the seagrass ecosystems Baronang family fish (Siganidae) found two species of Siganus canaliculatus (44%) and Siganus guttatus (56%). In the ecosystem fusion found 6 species of baronang fish with type composition ranged from (0,4% -70.7%. -

Juli 2015 Summary One of the primary challenges in ecology is to understand how environmental disturbance affects diversity and community structure, and what are the subsequent consequences on ecosystem functioning. Coral reefs are some of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet resulting in complex sets of interactions between benthic, habitat-forming constituents and mobile fish consumers. However, scleractinian corals, the primary habitat engineers, are dependent on high-light, low- nutrient water conditions and thus are highly responsive when the environment varies from this status. In Southeast Asia, an increase in human coastal populations centred around urban areas has resulted in extensive changes to the coastal environment such as degraded water quality and removal of fish consumers. This has resulted in highly varied abiotic and biotic conditions in relation with distance from the shore. Often, coral reefs closer to shore are much lower in benthic and fish diversity than those further from anthropogenic influences, with direct impacts on ecosystem functioning. -
