Pizzuto, University of San Francisco Moderator: Ilia Delio, Woodstock Theological Center, Georgetown University Presenter: James Wiseman, The Catholic University of America Respondent: Michael Barnes, University of Dayton After acknowledging the defi ciencies in Richard Dawkins’ best-selling book The God Delusion , James Wiseman selected three topics from that work that could usefully lead theologians to refl ect on the way they deal with them themselves. Concerning miracles, Wiseman clarifi ed his use of the term with reference to the three-part defi nition offered by John Meier in his multi-volume study of the his- torical Jesus. With that clarifi cation in place, he asked fi rst whether one could defi ne “miracle” in such a way that a cure deemed miraculous might also, in prin- ciple, be open to a medical explanation. He next inquired about the practical implications (especially for preaching) of the fact that certain New Testament accounts crucial for earlier dogmatic formulations are now understood very differently. On the topic of divine simplicity, he suggested that we would do well to take seriously Philip Hefner’s point that we cannot assume “the God’s-eye view” that would reveal the exact way in which divine being interacts with matter. Wiseman rightly acknowledged that such theological views would certainly not satisfy Dawkins, but made clear that in the fi nal analysis both he and his fellow atheists are faced with ultimate mystery no less than are theologians. -

Our common prayer at the tomb of the Apostle Paul has been a source of great joy for me. I give thanks to the Lord for this moving sign of our commitment to Christian unity at the beginning of the third millennium. INTRODUCTION Mahragan Alkeraza 2014 As we celebrated the conclusion of last year’s Mahragan with the distribution of the trophies for the first, second and third place winners, we were grateful for God’s blessings for a successful 2013 Mahragan. His Holiness Pope Tawadros II said during the Awards Ceremony in Egypt, “I am happy to see the activities of the Youth Bishopric, I am glad that our beautiful Church that is 2000 years old is full of young youth and I am proud to see the creative work and achievements of the youth.” We were also blessed to see that the Churches in Upper Egypt participated despite the sad and cruel events their Churches were subjected to last year. Last year, in addition to the usual participation from Egypt and Sudan, we had a great worldwide participation from 192 Churches representing more than 20 countries and 8 languages. The theme for Mahragan 2014 is “You shall be witnesses to Me” (Acts 1:8). -

The Holy See MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS POPE BENEDICT XVI TO HIS HOLINESS MAR DINKHA IV, CATHOLICOS PATRIARCH OF THE ASSYRIAN CHURCH OF THE EAST The Golden Jubilee of the episcopal consecration of Your Holiness, which has culminated in your distinguished ministry as Catholicos Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East, offers me the opportunity to extend my congratulations and prayerful good wishes to you. I thank the Lord for the many blessings he has bestowed on the Assyrian Church of the East through your ministry, and I am grateful for your commitment to promoting constructive dialogue, fruitful cooperation and growing friendship between our Churches. I recall your presence at the funeral of John Paul II and, previously, your 1994 visit to Rome to sign a Common Declaration on Christology. The subsequent Joint Commission for Theological Dialogue between the Catholic Church and the Assyrian Church of the East has borne many fruits. I renew the hope which I expressed during your visit to Rome in June 2007, that “the fruitful labour which the Commission has accomplished over the years can continue, while never losing sight of the ultimate goal of our common journey towards the re-establishment of full communion”. I wish also to reiterate my solidarity with the Christian communities in Iraq and throughout the Middle East, praying that effective forms of common witness to the Gospel and pastoral collaboration in the service of peace, reconciliation and unity may be deepened between the Catholic and Assyrian faithful. Your Holiness, on this significant anniversary, I pray that the love of God the Father may enfold you, the wisdom of the Son enlighten you and the fire of the Holy Spirit continue to inspire you. -

ABRAHAM von Kaschkar Abraham von Kaschkar, genannt der Große, (* 503; † 8. Januar 588) war der Begründer des Wiederauflebens der assyrischen Klosterbewegung im Nahen Osten (assyrische Kirche des Ostens) während des 6. Jahrhunderts1. Die nestorianische Kirche legte ihm aus Dankbarkeit den Ehrennamen „Vater der Mönche“ bei.2 Ihm, sowie seinem Nachfolger Dâdischô‘ verdanken wir die ältesten ostsyrischen Klosterregeln, die wir kennen.3 Das Klosterleben war bei den frühen syrischen und mesopotamischen Christen sehr beliebt. Einige waren der festen Überzeugung, dass nur streng zölibatäres Leben zur Erlösung führen könnte. Alle Mönche und Nonnen 1 „Als es im 6. Jahrhundert zur Reform und Wiedereingliederung des Mönchtums in die Apostolische Kirche des Ostens kam, die seit dem Ende des 5. Jahrhunderts das Mönchtum eher an den Rand der Kirche gedrängt hatte, da geschah dies nicht so sehr aus alten syrischen Wurzeln der Askese, sondern unter bewusster Aufnahme ägyptischer Vorbilder. Schon der erste große Reformator Abraham von Kaschkar griff bei der Abfassung seiner Klosterregel auf Gedankengut aus den Apophthegmata Patrum zurück. Jacob Nadian St. Bishoy Coptic Orthodox Church The Coptic Liturgy “An altar to the Lord in the midst of the land of Egypt” (Isaiah 19: 19) How it was fulfilled by the visit of The Holy Family to Egypt? 1 First: Who are the “Copts”? The term “Copts” is equivalent to the word “Egyptians”. It is derived from the Greek “Aigyptos”, which in turns is derived from the ancient Egyptian “Ha-ka-Ptah”, i.e. “the house of the spirit of Ptah”, a most highly revered deity in Egyptian mythology. Sons of Pharaohs From the Arab conquest and until today, this term refers to the Christian Egyptians to distinguish them from the native Muslims. The Copts as the successors of the ancient Egyptians are defined as the modern sons of the Pharaohs. 2 Sons of Pharaohs They played an essential role in the whole Christian world, especially during the first five centuries. Their religious background helped them to accept Christianity with eagerness and to enjoy its depth through their ascetic life, meditation and studying of the Holy Scripture. Common Christological Declaration between the Catholic Church and the Assyrian Church of the East - An Evaluation1 On the 11th November 1994 the Catholic Church and the Assyrian Church of the East made a very historic agreement in Christology. His Holiness John Paul II and His Holiness Catholicos Mar Dinkha IV took a brave step to put an end to the Christological controversy, which kept these two churches apart for several centuries. These two leaders together with their hierarchy and faithful are determined to restore the full communion between the two churches. This Christological agreement is considered as a basic step towards that goal. Whatever might have been the understanding of these two churches regarding the other in the past, now onwards they declare before the world that there is no disagreement in Christology and they have a common faith in the mystery of Incarnation. Both the churches recognize mutually that they both have kept the apostolic faith and guarded it uncorrupted. This joint declaration confesses the faith in the Incarnate Word our Lord Jesus Christ as the only Son of God, who became man for our salvation in the fullness of time. This was the constant faith of both the churches in the mystery of Incarnation of our Lord. It affirms its faith in the full humanity and full divinity of the Lord. He, the Word of God who became man, is consubstantial with the Father and consubstantial with us in all things except sin. His divinity and his humanity are united in one unique person, without confusion, or change, without division or separation. -

They can indeed, from now on, proclaim together before the world their common faith in the mystery of the Incarnation.* * *As heirs and guardians of the faith received from the Apostles as formulated by our common Fathers in the Nicene Creed, we confess one Lord Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, begotten of the Father from all eternity who, in the fullness of time, came down from heaven and became man for our salvation.
