DATABASE ANALYISIS OF CORAL POPULATION DISTIBUTIONS IN THE CARIBBEAN REGION, 200 ka to PRESENT Walker Charles Wiese TC 660H Plan II Honors Program Jackson School of Geosciences The University of Texas at Austin May 11, 2017 _______________________________ Dr. Rowan Martindale Jackson School of Geosciences Supervising Professor ______________________________ Dr. Mikhail Matz Department of Integrative Biology Second Reader ABSTRACT Concern for the future of coral reef ecosystems has motivated scientists to examine the fossil record to predict changes in coral distribution and population health. Specifically, in regions of concern, such as the Caribbean, a compilation of long-term records of coral reef health and biogeographic change during climate perturbations are can provide useful data for conservation efforts. The Caribbean coral reef record through the last 200,000 years (Pleistocene and Holocene) provides a good indicator of general reef construction. For this thesis, I have compiled a database of dominant reef corals across the Caribbean from 200 ka to present, which documents how species have been distributed over the last four sea level highs and their associated climatic changes. The presence and habitat of different coral species around the Caribbean and their changes over time can indicate both dominant morphological preferences and environmental controls on species distribution. Here, we found that the three main reef builders, Acropora palmata, Acropora cervicornis, and Montastraea “annularis”, have distinct reef zonation and distribution throughout the Pleistocene and Holocene. Changes from these typical distributions, like a contraction of the A. palmata during the marine isotopic stage 5e (125,000 ka), show an influence of a cold, northern sea surface temperature and rapid sea level rise on A. -

Naar Associate Professor College of Marine Science University of South Florida 140 Seventh Avenue South Saint Petersburg, Florida 33701-5016 USA Voice: (727) 553 1637 Cell: (727) 510 9806 Fax: (727) 553 1189 Email: [email protected] Co-PIs: David Mallinson (East Carolina University) Felicia Coleman (FSU) GENERAL OBJECTIVES/LOGISTICS AND SUMMARY OF PROGRESS: We have completed mapping the entire Florida Middle Ground HAPC (Habitat Area of Particular Concern) using a high-resolution 300 kHz multibeam bathymetry and backscatter system (Figures 1-3) . The survey augmented the existing coverage in the area from previous USF cruises. The main scientific objectives of the cruise are to define the fish habitat areas within the Florida Middle Ground HAPC using multibeam bathymetry, multibeam backscatter, and ground truth data (previous and new sediment grab samples and previous video samples). Second, to eventually produce a Habitat Map that defines area of Sediment, rock, and coral reef. Third, to provide a map of the paleoshoreline during a previous glacial period, when sea level was lower. The first objective has been completed and the data DVD’s have been sent to the Gulf of Mexico Fisheries Management Council in March 2007. Drs. Mallinson and Naar have coauthored one paper presented at the international American Geophysical Union Meeting in 2006 (Mallinson et al., 2006) and have another paper submitted to a special volume (Hine et al., 2007) and have a third and final paper summarizing all our work at the Florida Middle Grounds in preparation (Mallinson et al., 2007). -

Environmental Studies The Role of Threespot Damselfish (Stegastes planifrons) as a Keystone Species in a Bahamian Patch Reef. (76 pp.) Director of Thesis: Molly R. Morris Abstract The purpose of this research is to identify the role of the threespot damselfish (Stegastes planifrons) as a keystone species. Measurements from four functional groups (algae, coral, fish, and a combined group of slow and sessile organisms) were made in various territories ranging from zero to three damselfish. Within territories containing damselfish, attack rates from the damselfish were also counted. Measures of both aggressive behavior and density of threespot damselfish were correlated with components of biodiversity in three of the four functional groups, suggesting that damselfish play an important role as a keystone species in this community. While damselfish density and measures of aggression were correlated, in some cases only density was correlated with a functional group, suggesting that damselfish influence their community through mechanisms other than behavior. -
