It wasn’t that long ago, at least it doesn’t seem like it, that I was 5 years old and my parents presented me with my first . In the latest real estate terms, both that spinning rod and I would now be referred to as ‘mid-century classics’, but actually it was my parents who were the classics because they encouraged their two girls to learn to fish along with their two boys. It’s a given that most women of today did not have this opportunity growing up, and even if they were one of the lucky ones who did, continued support in later years was usually in short supply. In perhaps even shorter supply was fishing clothing designed for women before the 1980s. We had usually been introduced to the sport with hand-me-downs and when we eventually went in search of replacements, were forced to adapt our needs to fit somewhere within the only available parameters of Men’s Small and Men’s X-Large.
